WONDER WOMAN: DC Studios Boss James Gunn Has Seemingly Confirmed Diana Prince Will Be Recast For The DCU

We should have seen this coming, but new comments from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn appear to confirm plans for Gal Gadot to be replaced as Wonder Woman in the new DCU. Find more details after the jump...

Despite Gal Gadot's insistence that she'll return as Diana Prince, all signs point to her time as Wonder Woman having ended. James Gunn has already cast a new Superman and is searching for Batman, so there's no reason to believe he'd round out the DCU's Trinity with the Justice League star.

As noted, Gadot has talked repeatedly about meeting with Gunn and Peter Safran. Promoting Netflix's Heart of Stone, she claimed they assured her she would return as the iconic DC Comics character in a new Wonder Woman movie.

Despite that, the plug had been pulled on Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3 almost immediately after DC Studios was formed as it didn't fit into the DCU's new direction.

Shortly after Gadot's comments about her Wonder Woman return started making headlines, a firm denial was published in the trades, making a liar out of the actress at a time when she couldn't respond (the SAG-AFTRA strike was in full swing and those interviews had been recorded months earlier).

The prevailing theory is Warner Bros. and DC Studios were the inside sources debunking Gadot's Wonder Woman claims, though fans have continued asking Gunn for clarification on whether her version of the character has a place in the DCU. However, he's remained largely silent...until now.

A fan on Threads asked Gunn about rumours the animated Creature Commandos will feature Gadot's Wonder Woman. Those likely stem from the fact Anya Chalotra has been cast in the series as Circe.

When they put it to the Superman helmer that "it's safe to assume [Wonder Woman] hasn't been cast yet, correct?" Gunn responded with a blunt "Correct."

We don't know how else to read this other than the filmmaker confirming Gadot's time as Diana Prince is over and the plan now is to cast a new Wonder Woman. While we saw this coming, the offhand confirmation from the DC Studios boss is definitely a surprise.

When Jenkins was recently asked about Wonder Woman 3 being scrapped, she said, "Yeah, for the time being, but probably easily forever." Asked if another director would take her place, she responded, "No, they’re not interested in doing any Wonder Woman for the time being."

"It’s not an easy task, what’s going on with DC," the filmmaker added. "James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. I don’t know what they’re planning on doing and why...I have sympathy for what a big job it is."

I must be misremembering, but I thought WW being recast was basically confirmed a while back now.

You're not misremembering. It's already been reported several times

Well if it wasn’t made clear before it’s definitely clarified now. Thats a shame I really liked Gal Gadot as WW. I thought she was great I’ll definitely miss her. I was hoping we’d get a WW3 but oh well life goes on I suppose. Despite my attachment towards Gadot as WW, starting over with a clean slate is the best decision. The DCEU is dead as Kentucky fried chicken. The responsibility bestowed upon Gunn in managing the DCU is not something I envy. I hope it works out for him and everyone else. Let’s see what he can do. As for WW, let’s see who’s going to fill those shoes…..

@TheMetaMan - agree

I also liked Gal as Diana personally ( even got some enjoyment out of WW 84 even though it is inferior to the first one).

We have a new Superman. We're getting a new Batman soon. Why wouldn't we get a new WW?

Castings have been on point so far, def looking forward to who they cast as WW. That said, still ain’t raising my expectations for the new DCU just yet. Regardless of Gunns involvement or the quality of the castings.

There’s still a chance, although remote, that the entire DCU gets rugged if DC gets sold. Slim odds, but not impossible.

Only time will tell. We’ll see

Except for The Suicide Squad/Peacemaker cast, everybody will be recast. There's probably even gonna be an in-universe explanation for it. Think Gal Gadot could return as Hippolyta though.

@bkmeijer1 - exactly. It’s not like he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

@SDCA27 - yeah. I'm kinda even thinking the mystery the Lanterns are looking into is a universe change.

Think it'd be pretty funny if Peacemaker is the only remembering the old universe too. He'll probably get called crazy though. Not the first time he's seeing stiff that isn't there.

Like we [frick]ing didn't know🙄

Poor Gal thought she had this set in stone; the [frick]ers should have just put her out of her misery, just [frick]ing with her and us.

I also hope they recast Shazam; Zachary gets on my nerves.

Anyone Gunn casts as Wonder Woman and Flash will only be an improvement to what Snyder did. Gal Gadot (real last name Greenstein) and Ezra Miller as Wonder Woman and The Flash are the worst castings in superhero movie history, and they both had a lot of competition in the snyderverse, since it was full of terrible castings like Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Will Smith, etc., as characters they bad no business playing.

That said, it is hilarious how one word from Gunn generates entire articles now lol
