WONDER WOMAN 1984 Star Chris Pine On Sequel's Negative Reception: "I Love The Movie, So There"

Wonder Woman 1984 did not receive a warm reception from fans or critics, but star Chris Pine (Steve Trevor) feels that its reputation is unwarranted...

Despite mostly positive initial reactions, Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman 1984 was widely panned by critics and fans alike when it was released, but the movie does still have its share of loyal supporters - and can count one of its stars among them.

After being killed off at the end of the first movie, Chris Pine's Steve Trevor returned under somewhat bizarre circumstances in the sequel for a reunion with Gal Gadot's Amazonian hero. In the end, Diana was forced to "wish" Trevor back out of existence in order to defeat Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal), and the couple shared an emotional farewell.

While chatting about his most iconic roles with Entertainment Weekly, Pine defended WW84, and said he believed the movie was given such a hard time because it focused more on "forgiveness and compassion" than the usual superhero fare.

"I just thought, how powerful that there's a superhero film that has nothing actually to do with destroying New York. Like, we love telling the revenge story, and Patty [Jenkins] was flipping the script on the whole thing and saying, 'Woah, wait a minute, what about, like, forgiveness and compassion?' And people bash the movie, and I think it's because it didn't play the part of what people wanted, which is like 'Kill 'em! Kill 'em!' And I love the film, so there!"

In another recent interview with Business Insider, Pine said he was "shocked" that the studio would pull the plug on a franchise that took in almost $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

"I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere. I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”

Jenkins was all set to return to helm the third film, and had reportedly completed her script. Things changed when (or before, depending on who you believe) Gunn and Safran came aboard, however, and the threequel was shelved.

According to one report, the initial plan was to move forward with the project under the DCU banner, but it was actually Jenkins who decided to walk away after "receiving notes on the treatment she submitted to the studio." It seems WB higher-ups weren't completely sold on her pitch, which was said to contain "character arc problems which rivalled that of Wonder Woman 1984."

More recently, star Gal Gadot claimed that Wonder Woman 3 was still happening without Jenkins.

"I had a meeting with (DC Studios CEOs) Peter Safran and James Gunn, and they both told me that they're going to develop a third Wonder Woman with me," said the Heart of Stone star. "They said, 'You're in the best hands, you've got nothing to worry about.' Time will tell."

Gunn didn't weigh in on Gadot's comments, but a trade report would later clarify that Wonder Woman 3 was not currently in the works, and there are no plans in place for Gadot to reprise the role in the DCU.

There are no current plans (as far as we know, at least) for any incarnation of Wonder Woman in the first chapter of the DCU slate, "Gods and Monsters," but a Max TV series titled Paradise Lost is in development that will focus on “a Game of Thrones-type story about Themyscira.”

What do you make of Pine's comments? Do you think WW84 is better than its reputation suggests?

Another "it's the fans' fault, not ours" statement. It would be so much easier to simply admit the movie didn't work and move on.

No it’s because it was overwhelmingly BAD. Absolute cringe fest.

Technically the movie had a more mixed or divisive reaction then outright negative I feel but that’s besides the point…

Even as someone who got some enjoyment out of it (though it was definitely inferior to the first one) , I think Pine is way off here man.

I actually liked the movies message of not taking shortcuts ir the easy way and the excess of greed but I do think it had script issues (which sadly wasn’t helped by WB moving up the project a whole year while Patty was working on something else)…

I just think bringing back Steve while fits the story & Diana’s arc in the film felt like a case of diminishing returns to me while Cheetah’s arc wasn’t all the strong and let’s not even mention the elephant in the room that is Steve taking over another man’s body which shouldn’t even have happened.

Pedro’s Maxwell Lord was the highlight imo though.

@TheVisionary25 - I actually enjoyed WW84.
Guilty pleasure. Yes it’s mediocre, not a patch on its predecessor, convoluted storytelling and cheetah was a big disappointment but it has a certain charm to it. I liked Pedro as the villain and the movie has a few tender moments that made me smile. Bringing back Pine in the way they did was weird and rather unethical (if I’m gonna go there) but it is what it is. It could have been soo much better but trust me when I say, I’ve seen a whole lot worse. It was a comforting watch during the lockdown period when I couldn’t go to the cinema.

Agree with what you said , their Cheetah could have been stronger but as it was was alright.

well yeah, I'd love a movie if I got to pretend to have sex with Gal Gadot in it too.

Pine has to say he loved the movie.

Admitting the horrible movie was horrible would be like a Dad at the maternity ward nursery baby window admitting that his kid is the ugliest one in the room.

Kinda like with Gusto's 14 illegitimate alleged kids.

@DocSpock - Other actors and directors have stated that their movie didn't work for whatever reason, it's not uncommon. As for your example, all babies are varying degrees of ugly, so there's no prize for whoever is the least ugly.

Good riddance. Both films sucked, it just took 1984 to get people to break up with this franchise because the sensation and curiousity of it being new had worn off. Gal Gadot was terrible casting and nothing like the character aside from having dark hair, the star-less costume sucked, and making the films period pieces was a bad idea. I'm glad Gadot's WW is now far in the rear view of history.

The villain was a joke, WW taking advantage of some random dude was odd as [frick]. Never forget this hahaha

As horrible as Wonder Woman 1984 was, I somewhat blame fans that were screaming for "more color" and "more humor". The studios gave it to them and now everyone sees what a crapfest it led to. It dumbed down the super hero genre and made it silly. How else do you get a plot about a "dream stone" granting everyones wish. So to the many "comic book movie fans" that bought into that stupid idea...Wonder Woman 1984 is partly on them.

@Forthas - One can't look at the post-Nolan era of DC and post-Endgame era of Marvel without wondering if these companies were deliberately trying to ruin the genre.

Comes off lie q typical Hollywood doucher. I saw another interview he did on directin his movie pool guy I think was the name. And that interview made me think he was a doucher too. Grew up privileged in Hollywood in the business and thinks he's special and smart. Kinda liked him prior to it

This the DCEU movie I have probably rewatched the most honestly... it has turned into this thing where it's so ridiculous it's kinda fun? Like, an accidentally camp movie. Like, no way they went with this type of thing. A LOT should have stayed in the drafts and never seen the light of day... you know what I mean?

Suicide Squad doesn't have that appeal for me, but I see plenty of folks talk about it in lots of spaces online bcause it was a hyped af movie that gave us absolutely nothing and was mad disappointing. At the end of the day, these movies will have this strange legacy where they are not exactly reevaluated, like say Snyder or SW Prequels, but u know, maybe ppl will enjoy them in the Twilight type of way.

I don't think many people appreciate how difficult a concept it is to pull off. I don't think they stuck the landing, but I don't think many directors would have anyway. So I respect the creatives and Patty for trying to pull it off, but don't really like the movie at all.

The first movie was great but the sequel I haven't seen but from the sound of things it's bad and not worth watching, so not going to watch.
