X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Stills Reveal Two Key Mutant Characters; New Plot Details Revealed By Simon Kinberg

Dark Phoenix may look like X-Men: The Last Stand 2.0 but it's going to embrace cosmic elements from the comic books which that movie did not. Now, director Simon Kinberg has confirmed that Jessica Chastain's villain isn't actually called "Smith" but is a mixture of characters from the source material!

"I will say that Jessica’s character is not Mastermind but there are elements of the way Mastermind manipulates Jean that Jessica’s character does employ," Kinberg explained. "For me, as you’ll see, that Jessica’s character has elements of a few different characters from the comics." So, she may not be a Skrull after all but it also doesn't sound like she's Lilandra which is bound to disappoint many fans.

"She is from, let’s say, not our planet, her character. I’ll keep it relatively mysterious but it is a cosmic story in a way that is extraterrestrial, which is something we’ve never done in the X-Men movies before but is obviously something that is integral to the Dark Phoenix story so I felt we couldn’t’ do what we did on X3 and ignore that. We had to actually embrace it. So there’s a fair amount that takes place in space, and the inciting incident that starts to turn Jean, let’s say, dark and fill her with this power that she can’t control happens in space. And then there are forces from space that come to Earth because of that."

We also have a couple of new stills from Dark Phoenix, one of which confirms that Andrew Stehlin is playing Red Lotus, while Kota Eberhardt is taking on the role of Selene. Those two will no doubt be aligned with Magneto and part of his Brotherhood on Genosha (even though that island bears zero resemblance to the one in the comics, Kinberg has the opportunity to do something with that).

I get that they are trying to modernize Dark Phoenix and make their own story without repeating the mistakes from the past.

Nice pics.

@NinnesMBC - Then why are there yet another 2 gimp-looking mutants (one with purple hair, even!) in this movie, just like in The Last Stand?

Honestly I dug the trailer more than I thought I would. Hard for me not to get hyped about McAvoy/Fassbender.

@regularmovieguy - While at the same time I feel really...embarrassed for them? Great actors in a titanic-sinking movie.

Genosha imo is almost like Wakanda and Asgard: go ALL IN to make it resemble the comics as much as possible. Either give me the sprawling urban grandeur and big scope or don't do it at all.

Ehhh, there are many versions of Genosha, the Morrison one is the best of course, but it wouldn't make sense to have that on the big screen, there's gotta be a storyarc or something.
But pre-Morrison could do the trick tho.

@Doomsday8888 - "there's gotta be a storyarc or something."

Exactly why it shouldnt have been shoved into this movie. Feels underdeveloped when its the sort of element that requires and deserves lots of maturation and establishment. Even pre-Morrison Genosha felt like a massive urban landscape.

The Morriosn run is my favorite run outside of Claremont so.

@BlackBeltJones - Ok here’s something I don’t get

In DOFP, Magneto was able to understand the engineering of Sentinels & reverse it so they obey him after watching a PowerPoint presentation

In 10 years since Apocalypse, Magneto never took up architecture & learn how to make buildings? He can bend, lift, & control metal. He should be able to build buildings with ease

Instead we get a Lord of the Flies type environment?

Need to see more of this Genosha tbh.

@LEVITIKUZ
I reckon he did, watch Apocalypse'ending, he helps rebuild the X Mansion with Jean's help.

@LEVITIKUZ -

Its lazy and unambitious. Is he the master of magnetism or not? We've seen him construct wonderous things in the comics with his power. Like you said, this guy comprehended intricate engineering in the sentinels after a PowerPoint video. What stops him from building an urban city?

@Doomsday8888 - He rebuilt the X mansion?

Should mention I haven’t finished seeing Apocalypse & truth be told, I believe it’s the worst Fox-Men film

It has 2 Majors issues:
1: introduces too many characters
2: too big of a scale

In apocalypse alone we are introduced to Jean, Cyclops, Storm, Apocalypse, Psylocke, Angel, & Nightcrawler. It’s impossible to focus & develop their characters. In DOFP, we were introduced to just Peter Dinklage, Bishop, & Quicksilver

I love the X1 script with Logan joining the team because we are in his shoes as an audience. We get introduced to Cyclops, Storm, Xavier, & Jean through Logan’s POV. The team is established so we don’t need an origin. I know it’s Wolverine focused but I liked that direction. In Apocalypse, you aren’t in the shoes of anyone. You aren’t invested in anyone’s character but Magneto & Charles. It’s too many new things that you can’t focus on at once

It’s also too big. Reminds me of Johns’s JL origin with a noob JL Squad defeating [frick]ing Darkseid in their first team up

@BlackBeltJones - if he can build a mansion in 5 minutes, imagine what he can build in 10 years
