Editorial: What Could Have Been Better Used For The X-Men Films?

My first editorial on what could have been done to the (dying) X-Men movies. Yes, it is one of those articles again.

The X-Men is a well known comic book series that many fanboys, like myself, enjoyed for many years. When it gain a cartoon series back in 1992, the team's popularity starts to increase greatly among the general public(unless of course you count that one arcade game with the bad Engrish). And when the X-Men film came out in 1998, every fan out there agreed that the movie will present the X-Men series to the general audience everywhere. The movie was a major sucess and everybody now know who the X-Men are, creating a new found interest in comic books.

However as the films progresses, the series begins to fade due plot lines that have failed to captivate people who enjoy them; mostly due to not staying true to continuity to both the comics and its own universe. To me (and basically majority of the people on this site), I think that if Fox were to try and use other X-Men villains (beside Magneto and Stryker) and their story in thier past films, the fans of the comic and newcomers to the series would enjoy the level of plot diversity in the movie series. Here are those villains and plot that could have been used before.

Sentinels

This one has something all X-Men fans (whether they are true or not) would have liked to see in one of the movies. I mean, come on, world is filled with mutants with dangeerous powers and the humans needed something to protect their asses: the Sentinels. I can't imagine a great X-Men story without the Sentinals hunting all the mutants, capturing to protect everybody, and then enslave everybody on Earth due to some sort of messed up programming. It would have been cool to see these guys flying around and fighting the X-Men; instead all we got was a cheap cameo as nothing but a program in the Danger Room.

In movie plot wise, the Sentinels could have been used in either the second or third film. The second, though it was a good adaption of the "God Love, Men Kills" story, would be good since it deals with humans retaliating towards the recent mutant attacks. And the third would have been perfect since that, obviously, works better than that stupid 'cure' plot line that we all unfortunately have to witness.

Mr. Sinister

The guy is practically a mad, genetics scientist, who does questionable experiments on mutants; WHAT IS THERE NOT TO LIKE ABOUT THIS GUY!?! He kidnaps mutants, then he studies them, then he steals their genetic codes to create armies of super beings to his disposal, then ?????, and then he becomes world leader. This guy is the X-Men equivalent to Wesker of the Resident Evil series.

In movie plot wise, he could have been used in, well, ANY of the films. The second was perfect for his introduction due to that movie's atmosphere and all those mutant kids captured, the third would have made more sence than the 'cure' thing and that Wolverine movie just practically speaks for Mr. Sinister to appear (only with the wrong protagonist in it).
The movies could have just introduced him (as well as many X-Men characters like Havok, Banshee, or even Psylocke) as some mad scientist wanting to rule the world throught the recent apperances of mutants; by manipulating the genetics to give him and his followers powers. But since it is Fox; no original X-Men plot, just a bastard version of Deadpool.

Hellfire Club

Okay, I know, Fox are currently using the Hellfire Club in their recent movie; but honestly, they should have been used sooner anyway. A secret group formed for the sole purpose of gaining power and world domination, add that with all the mutants running around and you got yourself a movie.

In movie plot wise, these guys should have been included in X-Men Last Stand in place of Magneto. The group's inclusion could have gave depth to the whole Dark Phoenix story. They could have been just kidnapped Jean and try to manipulate her to work for them; just like in the comics. This would have made X-Men Last Stand from bad comic book movie to, perhaps, one of the best well adapted piece. Soooo, yeah; Hellfire Club is better used for the 3rd X-Men film than the 5th.

Mojo

This guy . . . . okay I honestly just included him at a pathetic attempt at making comedy on here. Sorry for wasting your time for mentioning this one villain.
All I can say is, that he would have been perfect if they made X-Men into a comedy satire that makes fun of the current super hero trend.

Juggernaut

Okay, he was use in X-Men Last Stand; so I guess I shouldn't complain.
. . . Besides the fact that Fox didn't explore his relationship with Xavier, and made him a mutant instead of a human with super powers, and really went cheap with his costume, and didn't made him bigger than 6'8" (I feel that the Juggernaut in X3 was short).

Shi'ar Empire

. . . I am kind of mixed on whether or not these guys should appear in the X-Men movies. The pro is that this could help explain the existence of the Phoenix inside of Jean during the third X-Men movie. On the other hand, the general audience wouldn't really understand how alien gods tie in with mutant racism.

But hey, it is a comic book movie; since when was anything ever supposed to be realistic (and don't say Batman, his whole character is nothing but fiction when you apply the things he do to real life itself).

Apocalypse

Need I really explain how good this guy could have been used in X-Men films now (not in the past). In retrospect, I think everybody can agreed that Apocalypse should have been one of the elements for the new X-Men film. Fox should have known that their films were failing, so why not include this guy just to save them.

Now as for plot, he should be included as the main villain to this new X-Men film series. Maybe have time travellers like Cable, Bishop, or even Kitty to go back in time to help Professor X create an alternative timeline where the Apocalypse future didn't happen at all. And . . . okay, this is getting a bit reptitive. I am just stating every single fact that would make First Class a better movie; I mean, who knows, mayber the Apocalypse element will tie into this new X-Men movie. Still, it is kind of hard for me to trust Fox after the last two films.

Well thats my editorial (first one, to be precise) on what should have been done for the X-Men movies. I hope this gives any of you guys on some insights on basically how Fox could of made the plots of their X-Men movies better (even though I feel this editorial isn't good enough like all the others).

I, being a huge Xmen fan, agree with most of your points... though i've never been a fan of the hellfire club or mojo... but everything else, pretty spot on.

100% agree, Fox did good with using magneto as the first but should not have gone back and done it over and over again, he was practically the villain in ever single movie. Even if he wasn't.

Is this a joke? they could have used more CYCLOPS!!! The battles...wait..there were no "battles"...just little stand offs and one on ones...there should have been battles conceived on an epic scale..i'm talking neo versus agent smith times a hundred....so much potential and they didn't even tap into .0000009% of what could have been..the problem was that singer took a "star trek" approach and didn't want it to be like "star wars"....well, that's great for characterization but horrible for the epic battles that are essential to x-men...personally i'd rather see a "star wars" approach to x-men than a star trek one...this is because singer loves star trek..."Hey singer, if you like star Trek make a star Trek film and stop f ucking with the x-men!!! x-men are x-men! what if some ass like you were to approach star trek like x-men? then you would know how we feel!"
fullmetal
fullmetal - 4/7/2011, 5:29 PM
when dumb ass singer took the star trek approach he basically threw all the "fantasy element" of x-men out the window..thus no epic characters like the Shiar, Apocalypse, Sinister, Mojo,etc....the guy is a moron...i remember watching the bonus features to the first two films and it seemed like any element that resembled the comic was always met with a "i don't know about that...how could that be possible? i just don't understand attitude." he even almost got rid of cyclops visor because it didn't make sense to him!!! he doesn't have a clue...

I guess the X-Men films did play it safe by not bringing in some of the more "out there" elements.

Magic amulets, spaceships, Ms Marvel, Mephisto, the future etc etc

It could be done, but they would need to do it without making the audience snicker (ie: just hearing the name "Mr Sinister" could make them do that!)

Watchman was NOT true to the source material...Are you kidding me? did you even read the book? screw that movie..just because it was shot almost frame for frame...it was the essence that got lost with that dubious and horrendous ending...but...to each his own..i think the original Superman was true to its...wait...if you think about it almost every comic book movie is truer to its source material than the x-men films...its sooooo sad

the thing with superman is that its easy to be true to his source material, where as with x men Fox refuses to follow any source of continuity or material that COULD'VE made their films great.

its hard work being an x-men fan, especially while the rights are in the hands of the biggest mutant threat of them all fox.

if i was in charge at fox or if marvel studios had made the movies.

i would of liked to see them play out something like this.

x-men trilogy

x-men the original five(cyclops,jean grey,ice man,angel & beast) vs magneto.

x-men 2 the original five vs the original brotherhood of evil(quicksilver, scarlett witch, blob, mastermind & toad)

x-men 3 x-men & the brotherhood of evil vs the sentinels.

or this it could be a brand new trilogy or just x-men 4-6,but you must add new members to the line up i.e wolverine, colossus, storm & nightcrawler.

the uncanny x-men 4 x-men vs magneto & the new brotherhood of evil

the uncanny x-men 5 x-men vs mr.sinister & the maraunders

the uncanny x-men 6 x-men vs apocalypse & the four horsemen.

if they followed the source more,i wouldn't have a problem.

but its all the changes they make that pisses me off.

cheers mate,i always loved the dark phoenix saga.

when the x-men battled the imperial guard for the life of phoenix on the surface of the moon & one by one we see the x-men defeated,is definetly one of the greatest stories ever told.

up there with the dark knight returns & watchmen.

I walked out 25 minutes into the first movie and didnt even bother seeing the other two. I was thinking about how they SHOULD have done it.

X-Men: Pryde Of the X-Men which introduced Kitty Pryde wouldve been a great route to go with the first movie. It could include Magneto & the Brotherhood and the perspective of Kitty Pryde would give the audience a connection.Roster would include Nightcrawler,Storm,Wolverine,Colossus,Cyclops,Xavier, and of course Kitty Pryde.

X-Men 2: Hellfire Club. They could adapt the storyline from the first appearance of the Hellfire Club. Include Seastian Shaw of course BUT save the white queen for a cameo at the end to set up the third movie.

X-Men 3: Conclusion of the Hellfire Club saga. The X-Men were captured in X-Men 2 and this would be about their escape and battle with the White Queen.

And marvel would have the rights before fox could screw this trilogy for me too.

The thing that shits me the most is that they cast Jackman as Wolverine. OK he is a good actor but he is a 200cm tall lanky caberet dancer who cant even grow a beard. Wolvie is a crucial part of the X-men and they should have had a short stocky hairy tuff guy.

haha...who's to say they're done?

I'll put money next villains will be Sinister, ushering in Apocalypse..for x4 and x5, that is.

I bet they'll also introduce Sinister soon, maybe in First Class 2..to eventually lead into x4.

IN WHICH Bishop CAN be used as well. To help "erase" X3, in a sense. AND ALSO, bring in Gambit. Bishop, Gambit, Sinister, and Apocalypse can all be used together to clean up the mess.

First off your title is off as the movies aren't "dying" when they make shit loads of money idiot. And I'm tired of all the hate on the X-Men movies. Magneto was the villain in the trilogy to set up a STORY that spanned 3 movies. Now I will say that I would love to see Mr. Sinister or Apocalypse in X-Men 4. And I want them to give Rogue her powers back AND make her fly and have super strenght instead of being whiny and essentially useless.

@Peteyparker I mention the two characters under "Apocalypse", I said that one of them should time travel back to the past to create a better future.

@Luther I wasn't necessary saying the ideas of making a X-Men film were coming to an end. I meant to say that the current X-Men film timeline is coming to an end; but thats kind of my opinion there.

@adamdusza Okay, seriously, where in your right mind makes you think I am whinning and hating the movies. I am just expressing my thoughts at what could have been done to make the X-Men movies better story wise. I bet I am not the only one who thinks the Hellfire Club was better off being the main villains in the 3rd movie than Magneto.

@teabag It did??? Hmm, I thought it came out in 1998? Aw well, I suppose I should change that before someone else starts blurting out things about me having the wrong information.

@marvel72 I like that outline of yours, its pretty good. Though, I kind of have some different ideas as to how the X-Men movies should have played out.

@BaneKill77 True, the whole space sci/fi elements does seems out of place for the X-Men; than again there is the Savage Land (which I should have mention) where I think Mageneto alter the humans there into mutants (well that shows where Fox got that whole plot where Magneto tries to turn the whole world into mutants scheme from).

@Everybody-laughing-at-the-name-Mr.Sinister
Yeah, I bet the audience will laugh at his name, up to the part when the audience see the guy on screen doing dark, gruesome experiments on some mutant with hopes to making a scientific achievment with a sadistic look in his face when he either succeed or fail.

I have so many things to say and so little time.

I'll start with the article itself. As long as you are aware that this is merely YOUR opinion of how things should be done that's fine but keep in mind that the studio has to go with one idea at a time and you really haven't given them much of a chance as they only have 3 movies out with one on the way. So far the villains have been Magneto in X-1, Stryker in X-2 Magneto/Trask in X-3 and the Hellfire club in first class. Are you saying there should have been more? Plus, who says the franchise is dying, like 7 guys on this site? Opinion is not fact my friend.

Fullmetal, the "Star Trek" approach is just that, an approach, no one is trying to make X-men into Star Trek, they just want a character driven plot as apposed to an action driven plot...fine by me!

Marvel72, so, you are saying you want the movie to just recreate the comics? What's the point? If you just want to relive the stories from the comics go back and read those stories again. If a movie is going to be made it should be a little fresh and original or else it defeats the purpose of itself. Turning a book into a movie is different as there is only one branch of plot to contend with while the X-men (or most comic books) is all over the place and constantly being reworked with different stories ongoing.

Also, your outline is baseless, your just rehashing what's been done with no reason as to why you are pitting the X-men against those characters. Plot come first, you fit the right villains in around the plot. Other wise you get crappy incarnations like Venom in Spiderman 3.

Very cool article. I loved the X-Men movies but there was a buncha of stuff I wanted to see that just didn't happen. You covered some of it, but I think you could go even further. I enjoy reading smart opinions on CBM's. So don't hold back, let us have it. I may not agree on some things but that would give us more to talk about, right? Rogues lack of action, Ian McKellan cast as Magneto (Rutger Hauer is Magneto.), Wolverine's over exposure and Cyclops' was turned into a part wimp and part pu$$! WUSSY!!.(read Uncanny X-Men #175 by Claremont/Smith, Cyclops hands the whole X-Men a class A ass whomper! All by himself ! With broken ribs!!!) just some of my pet peeves. I await your next article.

I think the studio where trying to cash in on the Name. The X-Men. Then they proceeded to screw it up 3 time's. They should have stayed with the original X-Men and bring in Wolverine. They said, "spandex is big joke and that it would look stupid". Hmmmm!!! Superman, Spider-man, and The fantastic 4 . Lets remember, make it look believable . OK! But, it's still NOT real. So you can take liberties. They could make out standing movies. They just need to stop, think about it. And they could have and Avatar block buster.

@ ryguy88

you can follow the storyline from the comics as well i.e captain america origin is still pretty much the same in the first avenger & so is elements of thor the same as the jms run on the title.

you can change the story slightly, but don't take the piss.

how many times has thor & the hulk battled in the comics,it'll still be cool to see them fight on the big screen.

just recreate images & storylines from the books.
