NEW MUTANTS Still In Josh Boone's Hands, But Might Be More Likely For Disney+ Release Over Theatrical

A new report has shared a few interesting details about the status of New Mutants, and it's looking more and more likely that the film could be released on Disney+ over a traditional theatrical launch.

As part of their informative weekly Heat Vision newsletter, The Hollywood Reporter aces Aaron Couch, Borys Kit, and Graeme McMillan have shared a small, but interesting, update regarding the other big X-Men movie currently on 20th Century Fox's slate: The New Mutants.

While the film is currently slated to open this August, it's not expected to be ready for release as it still has a number of reshoots to complete. These reshoots, which we've heard plenty about, were initially expected to happen sometime last summer in order to add more horror elements to the film, but according to THR's sources, the additional photography has yet-to-be scheduled. However, they do note that the film is still firmly in the hands of director Josh Boone.

Now, as for whether the X-Men spinoff will actually see the light of day, THR believes it will, but it's now looking increasingly likely that The New Mutants may not receive a traditional theatrical release and could actually be one of the first movie titles to debut on the Disney+ streaming service once the House of Mouse completes its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which is widely expected to happen within the next two weeks.

WHAT HAPPENING WITH NEW MUTANTS? It's easy to forget, but, Dark Phoenix is not technically Fox's last X-Men movie. The studio has director Josh Boone's New Mutants dated for Aug. 2. The film was supposed to open in April 2018 ... and then it was pushed to February 2019, only to be pushed back again to August. Will it ever see the light of day under the Disney regime? (Likely yes.) Will it make it to theatres? (Umm...) Well, will it at least make it to Disney+ (Sounds like a safe bet.) But it still has reshoots to do, right? (None planned so far but things seem to be in the hands of Boone, say sources.)

Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.

The New Mutants features:
Director: Josh Boone
Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik
Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane
Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball
Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot
Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage
Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes
Antonio Banderas in an undisclosed role

The New Mutants hits theaters August 2

Why would this debut on Disney+? Isn't this supposed to be a horror film? Hulu seems more likely.

And damn, they've got more reshoots to do!?!

@HeavyMetal4Life - and Disney+ isn't going to be available until 2020. I seriously doubt Disney would want THIS to be the first taste of this franchise under their umbrella.

A family friendly brand new streaming service like Disney+ releasing a straightout horror superhero Marvel movie?

Huh, who'd imagine it.

@NinnesMBC - How is a Falcon/Winter Solider show family friendly? The show will be them killing fools.

Even if it doesn't see the theater I doubt Disney+ is it's destination. It's basically a Get Out level horror film.

they're gonna reshoot it so much it's going to turn around and unshoot the entire movie. that might be for the best.

@StarlordsDad - if it was good it wouldn't be going through this production hell...

@StarlordsDad - ehh, then the "New" part of the title loses its meaning, because there aren't (yet) "old" mutants in the MCU timeline to begin with. it's like having the New Avengers without the original line-up.

I don't see why it wouldn't be on Disney+. Looks like the people that predicted it'd be streamed (nearly everyone) were right on the money.

New Mutants is the best X-Men film I have ever seen and I can’t wait for the sequel. Glad to hear Boone is back to write and direct because he nailed the first film. It was filled with so much more horror and suspense I didn’t expect and Magik definitely my favorite character. I was also surprised how practical the ending battle with the demon bear was. It felt so real like how Leo fought the bear in that movie but complete magical.

Also Wolverine’s cameo at the end was a total shocker and while am sad Jackman’s time is over am sure Tom Hardy would do fine.

The trailer was quite good and it really was a scary, horror movie with superhero elements. How did we get to this place where it's still in reshoots?

The Disney-Fox deal really did to it some numbers huh.
