THE NEW MUTANTS Reportedly Features A Lesbian Relationship Between Two Of The Lead Characters

While we still don't know whether or not The New Mutants will ever actually see the light of day, a new report claims that the movie will feature a prominent LGBTQ relationship not seen in the comics...

Josh Boone's The New Mutants has been delayed multiple times and while reshoots were supposed to take place that would have drastically altered the tone and added new characters, they still haven't happened and there's less than a week to go until the Disney/Fox merger is officially completed.

While it's possible that the movie could quietly debut on Hulu or Disney+, there's also a chance it might never see the light of day.

Now, a new rumour has surfaced revealing that Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams) and Dani Moonstar (Blu Hunt) will have a lesbian relationship in The New Mutants, a major departure from the comic books but a decision which obviously brings some much-needed representation to the X-Men Universe (R.I.P.) and the superhero movie genre in general.

Whether or not we'll actually get the chance to watch this play out remains to be seen, but if this test screening took place fairly recently, it's feasible Disney could just choose to release the movie in its current form before Kevin Feige reboots these mutants for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I mean, sure, why not? Neither of their sexuality has been a massive thing for them, so it wouldn’t hurt to change it for one film. Representation is always nice, especially for lesbians as they don’t seem to often get the same exposure as us gay males do.

@MikeyL - You mean other than Wolfsbane's long standing romance and son with Hrimhari.

MikeyL - 3/15/2019, 2:06 AM
@DonDave - which could have still been a thing (if FoX-Men kept going) as it’s possible for someone to be attracted to both genders.

@MikeyL - crazy how that works huh? Lmfao I guess no ones has heard of gay guys who have knocked women up before either.

@MikeyL - I wish writers wouldn't go out of their way to point out these things that are just meat for trolls to feed on... it does no one any good. So there is a lesbian relationship... so what. Why point it out to get clicks when you know it just starts a flame war.

The first 2 comments couldn't be anymore different from one another. I'm indifferent to it

@MyCoolYoung - lol Im not against it if it’s already written in the comics. Fox doesn’t have to show horn it in just because. They have multiple gay characters that are bad ass.

@MyCoolYoung - I personally feel like if it doesn’t harm the character or take away from their established relationships, then why not do something like this every so often? Yes, there are other gay characters in the comics, but this is the main team known to most, it would be a guarantee people would complain if that was changed just to have an LGBTQ+ character in it, and diversity has never hurt anybody.

Literally nobody loses out from this, it hurts nobody. All it does is allow someone to feel represented, for some little girl growing up to see this cool lesbian couple on her screen and see that it’s okay to be who she is. Hell, this may just be a rumour that leads to nothing, but I know growing up I would have liked to seen someone like me represented within the big two’s (Marvel & DC) superhero films

@MikeyL - no doubt. I wasn't saying I was against it and I know how important representation is.

I think for me, until I see it done well it just be a little weird.

Like Valkrie in raganarok was said to be bisexual we really got nothing. The girl from deadpool was lesbian but it didn't add a whole lot to anything. Her and her girlfriend could've been best friends and it wouldn't have changed much.

It's a challenge for these studios because they should never play into gay stereotypes but just saying this character is gay is not enough.

They have to show what it's like to be gay in 2019. Granted, I'm not gay so I don't know, maybe it's a normal experience now and they don't have to show much.

That's why I'm indifferent at least to I see it. It's really complicated.

So great we get at least 15 minutes of wasted movie to watch.

@elcamino - But if it was sex you would watch it? Gay and lesbian people exist, why not as super heroes?

@Mclane - exactly, clearly Shazam is gay, i mean look at that suit and all that padding.

To make the story and universe more acceptable and better, yes, for the sake of fake inclusion, no. Makes me think of the recent call for more black hairdressers in Hollywood (the business), since when has there been an embargo to stop people choosing their hairdressers?

Fake news...Lets not let it affect the universe we love...Gay and lesbians in films, so what, I care more about the enjoyment of the film. As long as we don't have Superman saying "Oh, those curtains class with your cape" then I'm happy :)

@Mclane - I know very little about Rahne but what I am aware of is that her religion (and the guilt associated with it) is a major factor of her character.

Making her gay (while I'm sure can be used superficially to market the film; "we have a gay superhero front and centre") would add an interesting dynamic to her character, were it on other characters it could feel just like a gimmick.

@StormXmen123 - Wasn't Rahne Catholic? "This nah proper.". Isn't that would Rahne said all the time? I can't remember, it's been 35 years since I last read New Mutants.

MikeyL - 3/15/2019, 2:25 AM
@Supercat6376 - I’m sorry it got removed, I was really confused because it just disappeared. There was nothing hateful in your comment, and to fully have a discussion about something then both sides need to have their voices heard. Mods, this was a mistake. I could understand if hateful speech or heavy hateful extremist views were in it, but it was not. It was simply the view of a LOT of users on here where it’s “it’s not in the comics, don’t chage it.” While I don’t agree with it, it was not hateful or homophobic- the user has even pointed towards gay characters from the comics that could be positive representation.

Supercat6376 - 3/15/2019, 2:39 AM
@MikeyL - thanks. I would totally be on board with exploring ricttors and shatterstars relationship If Fox hadn’t already butchered shatterstar. Two really bad ass characters. My favorite action figures growing up were cyclops, shatterstar, rictor, and strong guy lol
Supercat6376
Supercat6376 - 3/15/2019, 3:05 AM
@Soos - Na the lameness of someone actually taking down that comment just makes me shake my head. The comment didn’t even offend someone who is perfectly open and comfortable with their own sexuality. That’s what makes it worse. It was probably taken down by someone who is not part of the gay community 🤦🏻‍♂️ Debating with people is how we come to understand each other. Whoever took it down is a coward.
Supercat6376
Supercat6376 - 3/15/2019, 3:35 AM
@Soos - This is as close as I can get lol 🤦🏻‍♂️ If they’re not written that way in the comics then these films should stop forcing them in there just for the sake of it. Espceically when there are great gay characters like shatterstar and rictor, great characters, who’ve been gay for many years in the comics. Politically correct nonsense. ( no offense to anyone here. I’m just trying to antagonize whoever deleted my original comment ) . That person may just be the lamest person I’ve never met. Truly a sad, uptight, pathetic, eating his or her cereal in nothing but pee stained underwear in his or her parents basement type of pathetic.

But I have no interest in this movie anymore sadly. Feel like the pretty good cast is going to waste.

Ryan

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fact that Rahne is Catholic in the comics. She always had guilt over being a mutant. I think it would add additional layers to her character if she was feeling that guilt for being gay as well. Maybe she'll come to terms with both sides of herself. As for Dani's orientation. X-Force #75 implied that Dani was gay or bi.
