LOGAN Director Reveals There Were Discussions About A WOLVERINE/DEADPOOL Project While Making The 2017 Movie

Logan director James Mangold has revealed that discussions about a Wolverine/Deadpool crossover began when they were shooting that movie, and he even shares a few details about what it once looked like.

In next year's Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds' Merc with the Mouth and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine will finally share the screen. While we did see the two characters interact in the ill-fated X-Men Origins: Wolverine, that wasn't exactly the Deadpool fans had spent years waiting to see stand side-by-side with Logan.

It's thought the two unlikely allies will head on a trip through the Multiverse, tying into Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga and potentially leaving them both stranded in the MCU in time for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

We'd thought Jackman's tenure as Wolverine had ended in 2017's Logan (which was directed by James Mangold), but no superhero ever stays dead and the events of Deadpool 3 are expected to take place prior to the events of that tear-jerking adventure.

Talking to Inverse, Mangold revealed that talks of a meeting between Wolverine and Deadpool actually began while he and Jackman were making Logan.

"I've made a bunch of movies with Hugh Jackman now," the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director recalls. "We're good friends and we talked a lot. And one of the things we talked about a lot, even while we were making Logan, was the idea of how joyful a kind of Midnight Run or 48 Hrs. with Deadpool and Logan would be. So I completely understand those guys chasing that idea."

Seeing as Deadpool 2 would have been in production around the same time as Logan, we're guessing it was then that Reynolds started bugging Jackman about a meet-up in a third instalment.

The movies Mangold mentions are both action comedies which saw their respective leads forced to work together despite not liking each other. Needless to say, we expect that to be the case in Deadpool 3 as well.

As for how he feels about the upcoming threequel, Mangold added, "I never was under any illusion that there wouldn't be a new movie, even with potentially a new Wolverine, coming out in the not-too-distant future."

"With properties like this, I just view them as opportunities to make my version. For me, Logan was just my ideal version of a kind of Logan story."

Deadpool 3 is set to be released in theaters on May 3, 2024.

Mangold coming out like a total baby.
He's so mad his piece of shit Indiana Jones movie is going to suck, now he's coming out with loose lips.

I kind of hope Gunn just kicks this guy off Swamp Thing. He's never done anything great, and judging by the way he's talking recently, doesn't deserve to be held in high secret for anything coming down the pike.

Kick him out, Gunny, before he gets to do some stupid shit in there. We need someone strong on that whole Swamp Thing/Animal Man world. I think Del Toro, or in absence of that, Noah Hawley.

But really starting to think [frick] this Mangold guy.

This guy's mouth is already writing checks. And if you look at what he's done?
LOL.

not that great to say the least.

Get some taste, man
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/25/2023, 5:52 AM
@PlusUltra - Hardly need taste. Both crap installemnts.

He didn't get Wolverine at all. He just walked around the room with a big fat pussy drip.
Not that Wolverine is all that great in the first place, but these kind of [frick]ers don't even get the very basics.
Sad little day jobbers. I hope he never touches Swamp Thing. The guy is a total reductionist piece of shit mouth jobber. [frick] him.
Swamp Thing needs better and I bet it will get it because this little monkey is going down hard after he failed the Disney Overlords for their little piece of shit ass "Indiana Jones" movie.

Just go away dude, your movie sucks and everyone knows it.

Get the [frick] away from DC.

It's so funny to me that you think things like The Wolverine are quality.

I guess you just bend over and suck on whatever talks the loudest. Because that movie was shit.
LOL. How was it any different from any of the past iterations of Wolverine. It was all borne from the same "Ultra plus man god" cloth.
might as well just call any movie Wolverine: Total Blow Job From Fans.

He's ridiculous, he's a joke. He's not even a character , he's just straight up wish fulfilment.
such an embarrassing comic book notion.

TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/25/2023, 6:01 AM
@PlusUltra - LOL. Man of Steel, obviously you don't realize this,
but MAN OF STEEL IS one of the very best and most humanizing and deep comic book translations you've ever seen.

We all know you won't agree. But those of us that know Superman will. This movie just GOT IT.
It's a maybe different approach to the Superman MYTHOS. Maybe you would've liked a more grounded or small one. BUT SNYDER CAPTURED the REAL DEAL.

THIS IS what it would be like for an alien to land in the US and have to navigate the repercussions of HIS own powers. THIS IS how the world would respond.

You just want to sit out there and piss your pants because of "Marvel is stupid shit and what me gonna do so i guess pee pee". because your whole identity is wrapped up in Pee Pee Politics.
Disney doesn't have your back man. It's just Baby Shit Pee Pee after Baby Shit Poo Poo.

Why you are so loyal to this is beyond me.
Pee Pee. Poo Poo. More Disney Shit.

Shampoo Head.

You are an embarrassing person.

@TempleRod - Pee pee what now? The Flash failing has legit broken you
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/25/2023, 6:07 AM
@PlusUltra - OKAY. I SEE this tossed around here a lot.
And it's time to set it straight.

Superman is not some Wish fulfillment. Superman instead is a realization of the best of what any of us could possibly strive for. And AS SUCH, serves as an inspiration. VERY SIMPLE.

There's no GOTCHA MOMENTS with Superman. He only purely speaks to the best of Humanity.
You trying to USE that for your own personal or political agenda... WELL THAT SPEAKS a lot more about you than it does me, or Superman.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/25/2023, 6:20 AM
@TempleRod - The obvious wish fulfilment aspect of Superman can’t even be denied. He’s the ultimate power fantasy.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/25/2023, 7:20 AM
@PlusUltra - Yes but a Power Fantasy to the greatest fulfillment of what a person should be in this modern society. He still manages to speak to that core value.
I have a lot of friends that are Right Wing, and a lot of friends also that are Left Wing. And [frick] them both. Superman wouldn't care about that stuff. He would make his own way.
I think that's what we need in this world more. Is heroes who can make their own way.
I know that's a heavy load to put on Gunn, I mean the guy is just struggling to even make a Superman movie relevant and speak to people, but I really think that's a huge part of it.
Like, don't make him speak to either side, instead, let him embrace both sides unspoken. Because in real life, we're not that far apart. We just maybe need a fictional figure to point that out now and then.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/25/2023, 7:27 AM
And what I mean by Wolverine being a 'power fantasy' is that the chaaracter is all Ego driven.
It's like 80s action movies times 1000. Wolverine in this sense is not only Tom Cruise, but he's also Mel Gibson, and he's also every other sure hearted ACTION MOVIE DUDE. He's kind of a stand in for Marvel universe dumbshit. Which contrast that with the comics and his role there. In the comics, he is actually a source of uncertainty, a source of danger to the establishment.
In the movies, he's just Jack Reacher but with claws. Not cool. If Marvel is going to really tell the story of this guy, they are going to have to make him very unpleasant. Because that is a true source of his personality and his power resulting from that.
That's going to take making him someone that audiences have to hate sometimes. If Disney has that in them, i guess... Bring it On. I just don't see it happening.

Do you watch anything that’s not capeshit? Lol. The Wolverine isn’t even that bad outside of the silver samurai bit and that was studio mandated.

Man people kept saying the MCU should let Wolverine rest for 10 years or something after Logan, so they can distance themselves from Hugh Jackman's portrayal.

But we're right back at square one with him coming back in DP3. Dude I'm not waiting another 7-10 years for a new Wolverine just because they've reset the clock with Jackman like this, lmao. I don't care if we get a new actor 1 month after DP3 or even in the same movie, we need to move on from Jackman already.

I'm glad Ryan's getting to do something he's wanted for years. I'm in the minority, but I don't think Logan is untouchable. I've always found it overrated to some extent. I just can’t wait until with get a new version

So I was rewatching the Multiverse entries of the MCU again yesterday in this order: Ant-Man Quantumania, Loki, Wandavision, Spider-Man No Way Home, and Multiverse of Madness. Then I rewatched Deadpool 2 and saw that Cable's time device could play scenes the way the TVA could and thought what if Cable's time traveling capabilities came from the Kang of his universe? And the Kang we saw at the end of Loki is actually the Kang from the Deadpool verse? And he sends out the TVA to prune and eradicate both Deadpool and Cable. Cable and Colossus get pruned while Deadpool and Domino escape into the the Multiverse using the tempads and end up in a universe where the X-Men are active and his obsession with Wolverine forces the TVA and the "villain" to reign hell on that timeline and Deadpool, Domino, and Wolverine escape and go onto more Multiversal shenanigans to escape?
