LOGAN Star Dafne Keen Reveals How Hugh Jackman & James Mangold Mentored Her During The Shoot

During a new interview, Logan star Dafne Keen revealed how co-star Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold mentored her while shooting the critically-acclaimed 2017 X-Men spin-off...

After Dafne Keen's acclaimed performance as Laura/X-23 in Logan, it was generally assumed that the young actress would get the opportunity to reprise the role down the line. Of course, that was before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox's assets in 2019's highly-publicised takeover.

Keen has since gone on to play the lead in HBO's His Dark Materials adaptation (which will soon air its third and final season), and has also booked a role in Disney+'s upcoming Star Wars series, The Acolyte, and she attributes a lot of her success to what she learned from co-star Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold while filming the 2107 X-Men spin-off.

"I was told by James Mangold on the set of Logan to always go full out because if you do too much we can always bring you down," Keen tells Marie Claire. "Which I think is a very good tip for actors because lots of actors tend to not give everything they have in scenes for fear of over-acting. But if you’re overacted, you’re okay because you’ll have someone telling you to do less. That’s a top tip of mine."

Jackman has gained a reputation as being a genuinely great guy and a pleasure to work with, which Keen's recollection of the advice she received from the Academy Award-nominee attests to.

"Hugh Jackman was so great as the number one on set at teaching me how to treat crew. He was the most brilliant person with the crew, he taught me how the distance between cast and crew is wrong and that everyone is to be treated equally. He was close with everyone from the crew, he knew everyone’s names and would get people lottery tickets each week. I learnt the ropes from him and feel very lucky to have been taught that by him."

Will we see Keen pop her claws as X-23 again? It seemed unlikely up until fairly recently, but with Jackman set to return as Wolverine for Deadpool 3, it does open the door for Laura to return at some point.

Would you like to see Dafne Keen return as X-23? Let us know in the usual place.

Pretty good actress for the part. I'd like to see her return to the character and possibly introduce another sibling of hers similar to the comics.

X-Men:Days Of Future Past

Are the five best FoX-Men movies.

Deadpool 3 with Wolverine could be an instant classic but it's Disney Marvel now.

Yes definitely, she did so well in Logan she’d certainly be an asset to the MCU, providing of course she was allowed to continue as she did.

I'd like to see her again, she was a standout in Logan. But as much as I'd like her to be in Deadpool 3, I wouldn't want just a cameo either, should be a full role, and that might derail what the movie is going for.

Maybe Deadpool can bring her with him when he crosses over to the MCU ? I don't know...

Her performance in Logan was brilliant. One of the best child performances.
