LOGAN Writer And Director James Mangold Has Some Very Strong Opinions About Post-Credit Scenes

Acclaimed The Wolverine and Logan director James Mangold had some very choice words when speaking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe-esque use of post-credits scenes in films.

The post credit scene -- once a hidden and rare occurrence has quickly become a staple of cinema and an expected attribute of universe building thanks mainly due to the Marvel Cinematice Universe which, since Nick Fury's appearence at the end of 2008's Iron Man have become a signature for the franchise delivering teases as to what's to come in future films, setting or wrapping up ambiguous story points or just as a final joke stinger.

While most audiences have accepted this new attribute of cinema going, there's one person who is really not a fan - the Academy Award Nominated writer of 2017's LOGAN - James Mangold. During a panel for the Writers Guild Association the Walk The Line director didn't sugar coat his feelings about the practice:

“The idea of making a movie that would [frick]ing embarrass me, that’s part of the anesthetizing of this country or the world. That’s further confirming what they already know and tying in with other [frick]ing products and selling them the next movie while you’re making this movie, and kind of all that shit that I find really [frick]ing embarrassing. Like, that audiences are actually asking for scenes in end credits when those scenes were first developed for movies that suck, so they put something extra at the end to pick up the scores when the movie couldn’t end right on its own [frick]ing feet.”

That's not all Mangold had to say about them as conversation yet again returned to post-credit scenes later on in the panel with him stating:

"Now we’ve actually gotten audiences addicted to a [frick]ing bonus in the credits. It’s [frick]ing embarrassing. It means you couldn’t land your [frick]ing movie is what it means. Even if you got 100,000 Twitter addicts who are gambling on what [frick]ing scene is going to happen after the [frick]ing credits it’s still cheating. It’s just cheating, but there’s all sorts of bad habits like that that [frick]ing horrify me, man, that have become de rigueur in the way we make movies and I think the fear of being one of them that did that end then everyone’s patting me on the back and I feel like shit inside because I know I cheated, is probably the greatest thing that scares the shit out of me.”

While the 2013 The Wolverine helmed by Mangold did in fact have a post credits scene teasing the return of Charles Xavier in X-Men: Days of Future Past I think it's pretty safe to say that if Mangold returns to the X-Men universe with that possible X23 project that you won't have to sit through the credits for anything other than showing your appreciation for those technicians that worked on the film.

What do you think? Is the concept of post-credit scenes cynical and flawed? Has the MCU become too much like homework for future releases and less about fulfilling single movie experiences? Leave your thoughts below.

This guy needs to chill. Post credit scenes are something for fun and to make people stay through credits and appreciate the crew and cast involved in the movie making.

I love Mangold and what he did with Hugh Jackman, but this seems like Mangold was upset about something else and took it out on a discussion about post credits scenes. I mean, there's a way to share your thoughts in a productive manner. And then you can just go balls to the wall crazy and have a tantrum...

I love post credits scenes, they're great.

Why Mangold? why!? it's just a game to make the movies more interesting, fans enjoy it, we are not talking about a single movie, it's a universe of movies, the post-credits are necessary

it seems Mangold have his ego above the clouds, what he said is not a simple opinion or comment, is pure evil

@Fanmar16 - I've never read or heard anyone coming this close to having such a hard time with a few seconds of film at the end of movies. He either doesn't understand them at all or this is maybe the tip of the iceberg on more serious issues with him. His reaction doesn't make any sense.

I'm surprised Josh Wilding didn't get this article.

That being said, I have to disagree with all Mangold said. For starters, he did one in The Wolverine (a very good one I might add). Second, I feel using using a blanket statement here is wrong. There are good movies with post-credit (some or most MCU films, other CBMs) scenes, and there are bad movies with post-credit scenes (Green Lantern). I'm not saying he's taking a specific dig at anyone or any company but honestly the way he's talking about this sounds very pretentious and like he's so above it (which he isn't).

I just think it's a bit dickish to tell people what to enjoy.

@BlindWedjat - He isn’t telling people what to enjoy. Even if he’s coming off as blunt and combatative, I do understand his POV. And he isn’t saying not to like it. He’s saying he personally doesn’t like it.

@TheRealTomServo - Yeah, but he's expressing that in a very condescending manner. Like he's implying that people who like post-credit scenes somehow don't have an appreciation for film (which is something he can't measure or ultimately deduce).

@BlindWedjat - oh, for sure. but it isn't completely unfounded, if that makes sense. i was in a showing for the shape of water and some old fart god legitimately angry when he waited around for a post-credit scene and there wasn't one. i was only still in the theater because i like to wait for everyone to clear out before leaving.

@BlindWedjat - He acknowledged he did one, and I’m really sure that wasn’t by choice. The Wolverine was very obviously a studio film. That last half felt like a totally different movie.

Logan on the other hand, was a Mangold film in its entirety. No post-credits scene, a singular tone throughout, and a definitive ending.
