THE BOYS Star Antony Starr Would Like To Play WOLVERINE In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Hugh Jackman's time as Wolverine ended with 2017's Logan, and a new actor will need to play the X-Man in the MCU. In an interview promoting The Boys season 2, Antony Starr throws his name in the hat!

When Wolverine arrives in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's likely he'll be every bit as pivotal to this shared world as characters like Iron Man and Captain America. There are those who hope to see Hugh Jackman reprise the role, and though Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has met with Sir Patrick Stewart to talk Professor X, that seems doubtful at best!

However, should the opportunity present itself, The Boys star Antony Starr (Homelander) is ready, willing, and more than able to fill the void left by Jackman to star as the new Wolverine.

"Big shoes to fill, man," he told Screen Geek. "Jackman’s pretty much put his mark on that, hasn’t he? So, I never say never, man – but at the moment, I’m just enjoying what we’re doing here. I mean, to be honest, Wolverine doesn’t wear spandex, which is definitely a negative for me. I do like the feel of tight pants, you know, if they can tighten the jeans up, maybe."

"I’m just happy to be doing what I’m doing, brother, and whatever comes, comes. I appreciate the fans, you know," Starr continued. "We’ve got a great bunch of fans and they’re really enthusiastic and passionate, so, I love their ideas and their support. I hope they enjoy Season Two of The Boys and I’m just stoked we get a chance to do Season Three as well."

At 5'9", Starr is still a little too tall for Wolverine, but he's closer in height to the comic book character than the near 6'2" Jackman was. For most fans, however, that will still be too tall for Wolvie.

I don't really care about physical attributes like height when it comes to a role. His Homelander is great, so I can definitely see him tackle Wolverine too

@MalesMarcel - I’ve never understood the height obsession. I get that it’s a part of the character in the books; but it’s not Wolverine’s defining feature. I’ve seen my brother, and others, through out radical recommendations just because the actor is an inch taller than a leprechaun. 😉

@MG0019 - I don't need him to be below 5'6" or anything, but north of six feet and the guy starts towering over people, and it just feels un-Wolverine.

@MG0019 - It’s not Wolverine’s defining feature?! Seriously? His height (or lack of it) was literally one of the first things described about him in his debut in Hulk #181! C’mon!

@PerrinNation1 - When Ultimate Wolverine is tall and the MCU is already using Ultimate Nick Fury does it really matter?

@PerrinNation1 - And Batman had a gun in his first appearance. But no one seems to care or remember. Plus you can make an actor shorter with camera work if you want to. Just like in Lord of the rings.

@Darth258 - Yes. Because both Ultimate Wolverine aping Jackman and Hugh Jackman being tall in the first place were both big mistakes.

@Fares - Bingo.

Characters change over time. Jackman has set the tone. Wolverine will be tallish and handsome going forward in onscreen portrayals.

@Darth258 - Ultimate wolverine is 5'9 pretty average and when damn near every super hero is 6ft+, that could be considered short.

@Spock0Clock - Agreed. Plus, he wasn't named Wolverine ironically. They are fierce *little* creatures.

Would a short wolverine be accepted by the GA after big ole hunky Hugh Jackman 🤔🤔

@TheSnyderClunge - For all the stuff Feige probably hated about how Fox handled the X-Men, I sincerely doubt he was ever disappointed by Jackman. He walked the line perfectly of bundling the authentic Wolverine character traits into a leading man package (exactly what the comics have been trying to do since the 90's).

As an old-school fan, I don't care for it. But there's no debating how effective the alchemy was there. And it means whatever the MCU does with the role is going to either need to be a big swing (which I don't see them doing), or find a perfect Jackman 2.0.

He has been my #1 choice for Moon Knight for years. His work on The Boys basically showcases exactly why.

He was amazing in Banshee, and I off-and-on pictured him as Wolverine while watching it. He's a shade taller and older than I'd like, but I think he's got a great look for Logan (a bit softer of a face, almost pug-like). The MCU could do so much worse. It really depends on what Feige is aiming to do with the character, and how the dynamic works with the other X-Men.

My current short list of three is Starr, Milo Gibson...

...and Jack O'Connell.

Very different vibes from each, I think. It really depends on the context. You lunatics have even convinced me to consider Radcliffe. ...Look, I'm open to it, but it's an uphill climb for him.

I forgot about Taron Egerton. He's not my perfect pick, but you can just feel how effortless he'd fit into the MCU. If I know Sarah Finn at all, she's got her eyes on Egerton.

@Spock0Clock - I didn't even realise that he was lucas in banshee until someone pointed it out. Thought he was must have played one of the amisuh guys goons.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 8/24/2020, 2:13 AM
...Should I have Starr in that short list? I was fan-casting him as Magneto a while back (before Boys), so maybe I just like him so much I would put him in any role. But he can't be up for doing this for 15 years, which is the minimum commitment I'd want from a new Wolverine casting.

Also... Jack is filling out, so maybe that short list is back down to just O'Connell and Gibson.

(But Starr would be stellar in any number of other MCU roles. Black Bolt jumps to mind, especially if Inhumans are coming to Ms. Marvel in a big way.)

"Starr would be stellar"? [frick] me, what a hack. I didn't even do that on purpose.

@Spock0Clock - Damn, those actually seem like 3 solid choices.

Literally never considered Starr before seeing this article, haven't seen him in anything but The Boys and that role couldn't be more different to Wolverine, but seeing all the comments regarding his other roles he actually seems like a good choice, although if he's around 44 now he'll be 50 by the time we see the character in the MCU.

Haven't seen Milo in anything so no idea what he's kind as an actor but looks wise he could probably pull it off.

Jack O'Connell is a really interesting choice. Seen him floated around for a couple of other roles around here but don't think I've ever seen him brought up for Wolverine. He was actually my choice for Jason Todd if they ever adapted the Red Hood arc with Batfleck but it seems that ship has probably sailed at this point. But he's got this intensity while also being able to be cocky and charismatic that could work really well for Wolverine (kind of like Tom Hardy, who's also been mentioned for the role).

Honestly, whoever Marvel go with, it's gonna be really weird for me, and I'm sure millions of fans, to wrap my/our head(s) around just because Hugh Jackman is the Wolverine I grew up with (I was 6 or 7 when the first X-Men came out) and he gave so much to it over the years that he became pretty iconic regardless of any deviations to the source material or the inconsistent quality of the films he starred in. Thankfully between Days of Future Past and Logan, he went out on a high.

AC1 - 8/24/2020, 2:42 AM
@Spock0Clock - also weird you mention Starr as Magneto; as soon as I saw the headline (before reading about some of the other roles he's done) my mind immediately went to "he seems more like a Magneto" - maybe based on a combination of him having a very (VERY) passing resemblance to Michael Fassbender, and his clean-cut/light-haired look playing a supervillain in The Boys?

@Spock0Clock - Jack O'Connell as Wolverine?

@Spock0Clock - huh, looks-wise, Milo Gibson is how I picture a real-life Wolverine in my head.

I still say Tom Hardy is perfect. I know, before any of you start in with the Bane, Venom BS. But when I saw his physique and performance in Warrior, I was convinced. Dudes a solid actor with the perfect look. He can get even more jacked than Warrior, he’s short and stocky. Intense and animalistic. I say get him. Plus he’s not too old to do it for a good decade.
