As part of a series the Film Society of Lincoln Center is doing on his work, Darren Aronofsky appeared at the Walter Reade Theater last night. Best known for movies such as The Wrestler and Black Swan some have wondered why Aronofsky would sign on for a big budget film like Wolverine with Hugh Jackman.

He explained why he has joined other "indie" turned CBM directors to moderator Scott Foundas during a post Wrestler screening conversation....

“That’s all Hollywood is making. I do think there are interesting stories and characters in that world. And people like to go see them.”

“I’ve kind of done these five movies where getting the money for them has been more of a challenge than making them. I’ve been the only person in the room who’s wanted to make these films. Now it’s kind of exciting to be in a room where every single person wants to make the movie.”

Well wolverine could be a good movie if they don't shove random mutants in there and [frick] up the silver samurai who's blades is a part of him ahem barakapool but I think it has a good chance but then again it's fox.

If all you get out of Black Swan is "OMG HAWT LEZBO SCENE FTW!" then you're an idiot. That's not a good reason to see the movie at all. Black Swan is easily one of my picks for best of the year. Can't decide between that and The Social Network.

Also, if anything Aronofsky will deliver a very different superhero movie. Good or bad, it'll be an interesting watch.

Umm... Instead of accusing him of selling out, why don't we embrace the fact that an accomplished director with highly developed artistic sensibilities is responsible for our beloved characters? This is hopefully the equivalent of Nolan signing on to the Batman franchise, it's certainly got it's parallels.

At least he's honest. At the very least, this film movie will be better than Borigins.

man i wish i could remember who said it so i could give them credit for it but they said - "the best writer working today and the best artist working today will work together on something, and that thing will be a comic book"

it should be the same way with CBMs. get the best filmmakers to tell the best stories they want too.

Haha, you Fox haters make me laugh, end of the day Marvel Studios, no excuses.

I don't care if this is a good X-movie, Fox is still involved and theres no excuse for Fisty A$$!

But yeah if its stand-alone (no stupid X-cameos for no reason) lots of Ninjas 'n' stuff then HELLZ YEAH... MILLER TIME!

Wont hold my breath tho. : P

Fingers crossed.

THING IS, WHAT DIRECTION IS HE GOING TO GO? MASK? NO MASK? ADDING MORE THAT WASNT IN THE BOOKS OR BEING TRUE TO THE SOURCE MATERIAL...WHAT'S HE GONNA DO???

@OdinsBeard- It was Neal Adams on "Secret Origins of the DC Universe."

@Intruder- It's Zack Snyder. What makes you say he's a hack? I know you're a Marvel guy, but Watchmen was awesome. 300 and the Dawn of the Dead remake were good too.
StevilNYC
StevilNYC - 1/6/2011, 12:22 PM
The mask might happen, Gunsmith. The setting in Japan could be responsible. Perhaps it's a samurai thing at first that Wolverine alters to complete his costume's look. Either way, there are no excuses for this one to fail...well besides Fox. Great director, quintessential Wolverine actor, and slue of mistakes to learn from. I can't wait for this one.

Really? The lack of squid did not make that movie fail. I would not say it made it better, but it did not hinder it IMO. They could not have done the squid without adding the Tales of the Black Freighter and by that point the movie would have been 4 hrs long or more.

Ah, the old squid arguement. I personally feel the squid might of come off cheesy on screen. The one thing I think we can agree on is that Darren Aronofsky for Wolverine is going to be great. I just hope the script is good and isn't all muddled like the first one.
mwmcintyre

What he chose to do instead of the squid made much more sense. The squid was some random possible threat, no one could know if it was one time or an ongoing threat. Dr. Manhattan presented a very real threat that everyone was aware of, suiting the stated purpose of the attack a hundred times better than "Random alien squid corpse". Not only that, but it ties back in to the characters and directly comments on the difficulty Manhattan has interacting with the rest of the world in the first place. At the end of the day, what they did in the movie made more sense and was much more relevant to the characters and storyline than the squid ever was. The only things the squid had going for it was a fascinating concept and a good visual image.

Its all going to depend on the script. Even the best directors can't save bad writing.

I am so happy Darren is doing this film!! All of his films are different and very artistic in the metaphors he presents on screen. I just saw Black Swan a few days ago and I loved the constant metaphorical storytelling with the strange emotional struggle going on in portman's head. It felt very "Hitchcock-esque." I can't wait to see what he brings to Wolverine.

I don't get all the Watchmen hate. That movie was really good. Granted, it is wasn't a perfect translation from the novel to the screen ( I think Rorschach's death was much more intense in the novel and that Mars scene was "meh") but still, the moment it was over I wanted to watch it again. Nolan's batmans aren't perfect translations either and almost everyone praises those.

I'm ok with Darren directing this movie, he's worked with Hugh Jackman before when he directed The Fountain, i actually loved that movie, so i have faith that he'll at least try to make a good movie, haven't been disappointed yet

I have a feeling we will finally see Wolverine in his real costume, the whole samurai thing gives a good excuse to use it IMO
