Hugh Jackman Talks WOLVERINE 3, Retirement, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, & Teases DEADPOOL Cameo

Hugh Jackman has gone on the record to say Wolverine 3 will be his final go-round as the fan favorite mutant and while that is sad news for fans everywhere, that doesn't necessarily mean he won't appear in 2016's Deadpool and/or X-Men: Apocalypse! Come see what he had to say!

In 2017, after seventeen amazing years, Hugh Jackman finally hangs up the claws and walks away from Wolverine.

Considering it's getting harder and harder to remember a time when Jackman wasn't playing the fast-healing mutant, his last time as Wolverine will certainly be a sad day for fans everywhere. Even though he's officially gone on record to say Wolverine 3 will be his final appearance as the fan-favorite character, it's starting to look more and more like there may be a good chance we see Jackman pop up in at least one, maybe even two, X-Men universe films before then. It's been long-rumored that Jackman will make some sort of appearance in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse and there has recently been mutual interest in a potential cameo in the Ryan Reynolds-starrer Deadpool.

At the recent premiere of Jackman's documentary Dukale's Dream, the Huffington Post caught up with the Academy Award-nominated actor and managed to squeeze in a question about whether or not he could speak on the Deadpool cameo rumor. Jackman coyly replied:

"Hmmm, I can't ... no. Nope," Jackman mumbled under his lips while giving off a sweet smile. "But, I am really good mates with [Reynolds] so ..."

When asked about X-Men: Apocalypse, Jackman replied with an equally intriguing "Who knows?"

Deadpool recently wrapped, so if a Wolverine cameo is planned, there's a good chance it will be shot during post-production to keep it as confidential as possible. X-Men: Apocalypse is currently shooting and is expected to shoot deep into September, so there's more than enough time for Jackman to head up to Montreal and film a few scenes. After a few recent health scares, Jackman is currently healthy again and in the process of slowly getting back into Wolverine shape, so it may be a few more weeks before he's ready to suit up again.

Speaking on his upcoming retirement, Jackman says he felt it was just time to move on, describing it as preferring to leave the party rather than getting kicked out of the party. He spoke a little on what factors played into him making the decision and how he did have doubts before making the call:

"There was a period about six years ago when I could see my choices being narrowed by Wolverine, but now I feel like they've opened up from doing 'Les Mis' or 'Prisoners' or 'Pan.' The options coming to me right now are more varied than they've ever been in my life," He jokingly added of what's to come. "Hopefully, I'm not that actor in 10 years who's unemployed going, 'Why did I ever leave it?' and then begging to come back."

He was thankful to 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment for casting him so many years ago, and being so supportive to him throughout his career, but also acknowledges that the studios are likely already looking toward the future at the next star to put on the claws:

"They were all really supportive -- 17 years is a long time," he said. "And I'm sure that they've already started casting, you know? Someone may sign up for an 11-picture deal, as we speak."

As for the James Mangold-directed Wolverine 3, Jackman is more than excited to get started on what will be his final adventure:

"Weirdly, I'm really excited about shooting it. I feel great enthusiasm, I suppose it's denial -- like the football player who announces their retirement before their last season -- and so I'm really looking forward to it. But, I know it's not over yet! I still got a lot of 4 o'clock mornings and a hell of a lot of egg white omelettes and steamed chicken to have, and all of that.

I feel very blessed that I loved playing this part, the last 'Wolverine' and that last 'X-Men' ['Days of Future Past'] were maybe two of the best and I feel like, hopefully, we'll do it again with this last one."

Jackman suiting up as Wolverine will never not be a great thing and two potential Wolverine appearances in addition to his final appearance sounds like a great way for all fans to say goodbye to the character. This is a lot of information to process, so what do you guys think of the news? Excited to see Jackman potentially show up in Deadpool and/or X-Men Apocalypse? Excited for the Wolverine 3? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Hugh's gonna be in Apocalypse. With the ending of DOFP, no doubt Wolverine will be a horseman of Apocalypse.

Also please do Deadpool Hugh.

Respect to Jackman but

I'm ready for something new

I really want MCU Wolverine, Enemy of The State style but I know it'll never happen

Enter X-23 and Danken. Don't recast him.

It's weird to imply that he's barely in Apocalypse or maybe not in it at all. Cause for me the ending of DotFP the door was not closed for Wolverine, we even need some explications.

@VisionaryNPA

Personally, I absolutely hate the Mystique/Stryker twist at the end of DOFP

Did Logan even go through Weapon X? Did Mystique torture Logan for fun and put adamantium in him?

I really didn't like that and thought it was stupid, and then it's like we're left with Happy Logan or something, worst ending

I'm with Jvcle, don't recast him. Set up Daken or X-23. Daken could allow for a much more violent Wolverine. X-23 could allow for a good guy Wolverine. X-23 would be a great way to tie in his origins, and wrap up the Weapon X plot. Daken would also be a good way to bring him back to a place from his past.

I'm probably the only one

But, I totally disagree

I think there are much better actors for Wolverine out there

I respect Hugh and his dedication

But, I still haven't really seen Wolverine on screen

@CaptainAmerica

Nah, I'm not, I can't wait for the DCCU too

Like I said I respect Hugh, his dedication, and what he's done for the genre but it's not the Wolverine that I know

It's not The Wolverine I know from the comics, and there is no reason that they can't make a version of the suit, like the one I posted above work on screen. In the comics Wolverine is different too, they adapted him a lot for the screen and thats cool, but the Wolverine from the comics is more of a savage

@CaptainAmerica

And, Marvel Zombie Wolverine, I mean, Jesus. You, know, Marvel Zombie Wolverine on Walking Dead or something, you better run

And, can you imagine how bad he would smell. Wolverine already needs a shower, but Marvel Zombie Wolverine, holy shit

I do not want a new wolverine if Hugh is retiring.. Make it be x-23 like someone said, I don't want the wolverine that exists in this universe recast.. If you recast him let it be a reboot

@DrKinsolving, why would you want him in the MCU then???? Why not a suited up Wolverine at Fox?

@CaptainAmerica

"why would you want him in the MCU then???? Why not a suited up Wolverine at Fox?"

Because I like the character

Why wouldn't I want him in the MCU? Have you ever read "Enemy of The State" the story that I specifically mentioned? He would need to be in the MCU for that story to happen, Fox doesn't own the rights to Hydra

I would also like to see a good Weapon X movie

Fox had so many opportunities in dofp to truely start universe building but all it essentially became was a ret con to get rid of the sour taste of x3. Should have had a prpegant Jean grey at the end of dofp hence teasing cable(yes I know Madelyn Pryor was the mum but that would fricking confuse everyone) should have had Laura Kinney as well, that would be something new a lady with wolverines bad ass attitude, surely that would go down better than straight out recasting him?

I'm going to honestly miss Hugh, the guy can truly levitate his acting with whatever he's given. I just hope that Mangold will end things with Hugh on a high note. I don't think Jackman's final Wolverine outing has to be rated R. But if they want to just go all out knowing that they won't have to worry about reception for the character and complaints for it's gruesome grittiness and gore I say be like a bully in a playbox and do your thing. Just give us a solid story and a costume and I'm sure people will instantly be pleased from the jump. BTW if Wolverine is making a cameo in Deadpool I honestly think there's a better chance of him wearing a costume more than ever.

As for the conversation going on about a (current) MCU take on Wolverine: Eh, if Wolverine ever did go back to the MCU the only way you would really get his rage presented in the correct manner is if he were to receive his own Netflix series just like Daredevil did. You would also have to keep Fiege as for as you can away from the character since he's stated himself that the MCU will not go "dark". If he's presented in the films they'll probably tone him down more than Hugh's Wolverine and give him even more machinery and aliens to fight over humans.
