James Mangold to Direct The Wolverine?

According to Deadline, not only has Fox narrowed its search for a director for the Wolverine sequel, but according to the site the film will begin shooting this fall.

The director being talked to is James Mangold, whose previous credits include the Johnny Cash bio-pic Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma and, most recently, Knight and Day, which starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

Deadline is saying that negotiations are only just starting, but that it is looking like Mangold will be stepping in for the departed Darren Aronofsky. The script, as was the case previously, is written by Christopher McQuarrie and the majority of the film is expected to be shot on location in Japan.

Mixed feelings about this. Loved 3:10 To Yuma, but despised Knight And Day. If nothing else, the guy does action VERY well. I'll give him a chance. :)

Time to see if FOX can go on a streak and not eff this X-Men film up.

3:10 to Yuma was an excelent film. A solid choice of director here.

While I don't feel Mangold is as talented a director as Aronofsky, I think that he could do a very, very good job with McQuarrie's script.

Just remember, Knight and Day's downfall was its script (which was written by a virtual novice to the field), not its directing. Mangold has proven that with the right script (as was the case with Walk The Line and 3:10 to Yuma), he can make quite an excellent movie.

Hopefully this gets verified and filming starts soon. Jackman isn't getting any younger!

Yes Mangold did do Knight and Day but that movie was bad not because of him necessarily script and cruise [frick]ed it up but the dudes a good director not Aronofsky but certainly a very good director Walk The Line and 3:10 to Yuma proved that any man that can make a really good movie, if the scripts right and fox don't interfere too much then we'll get a solid Wolverine movie. 10 times better then Justin Lin so appreciate this choice if its true. I am telling if the script is good then this guy will deliver.

like you said its hard to tell what is crap due to direction and what is crap due to writing.

i think its easier to see what has been well written and not directed well than it is to see what has been directed well but poorly written.

knight and day was bad do to the actors not the director, i have seen all 3 movies and there all good in diff ways, 3:10 and k&d both had some good action scenes. i dont mind this, lets hope its better the origins and we will all be happy

Yes, Wolverine was crap and The Last Stand was sub-par compared to the first two films, but isn't First Class proof that Fox can still make a good X-Film, so long as they step back from the creative process and give the franchise to a team that has actual talent?

Or are you of the opinion that Fox has yet to make a good X-Film? Do you dislike Singer's & Vaughn's films'?

they definitely need to include Singer in some form or fashion for this one so we don't have more of those glaring continuity errors from XMOW.

I have seen all three movies listed above, Walk the Line was amazing, I love Johnny Cash, 3:10 to Yuma was awesome, I can't stand old westerns, but Westerns like this I love, and Knight and Day was ok, more of a rental with your Girlfriend or Wife, but that's not his fault.

Now, I am disappointed Afronsky backed out, but this guy will do fine, Now it's been awhile since I saw those movies, but if I remember correctly, they were all rated R, here's to Fox, don't mess with his R rated movie record, let Wolverine Do what he does best, which isn't really nice! And something other than a all black leather outfit would be nice too.

walk the line was an amazing movie and i have heard 3:10 to yuma was phenonemal as well but i heard knight and day was terrible sooo hopefully he can make it like the 1st 2 listed and make a good movie

Considering that the rumors are this takes place after X3 I doubt he will have a costume, he hates wearing them when the team goes all out, so I'm betting he'll just wear street clothes like in XMOW. but if he does get a suit I say go with the classic Tan outfit I think it would transition easier to screen then the yellow and blue.

I agree, this needs to be Rated R, or at least and UNRATED version when it comes to dvd/Blu-ray. As far as the costume, no spandex, but rather a tattered outfit made from cloth and torn up as if he was in an explosion or a bad ass fight. Something close to Captain America's suit, just NOT spandex or all black leather.

Sounds good to me. I loved Walk the Line and 3:10 To Yuma, both great character pieces and very well shot and never boring. Lot of potential. He is great at action (3:10 to Yuma showed that and it was the one good thing about Knight and Day). Also he has a nice variety in his filmography. He directed a romantic comedy (Kate & Leapold), a biopic (Walk the Line), a western (3:10 to Yuma), a drama (Girl Interupted), and i think a superhero movie would be a nice addition to that resume and if he can bring what he brought to all of those, it will turn out ok.


I trust the screen writer, and Mangold does best when he has a good script (most directors do). I hope Bryan Singer comes aboard to produce it, cause his vision for the X-Men films is the best and he is the one who brought it to the screen so he has the best idea for how it should be planned out.

I am now offically excitted. I wasn't on board with Arronofsky (He is an overrated director, and very pretincious). So I am happy with the choice.
