Simon Kinberg Reveals WOLVERINE 3 Has Already Started Filming; Confirms R-Rating

Speaking at the X-Men: Apocalypse press junket, producer Simon Kinberg revealed that the next and final Wolverine installment has already started filming. He also shared a few tidbits on the film's violent tone.

Following his expected cameo in Bryan Singer's highly anticipated X-Men: Apocalypse, long-time franchise star Hugh Jackman will be seen next for the presumably final time in his third solo Wolverine outing, which, according to producer Simon Kinberg, has already started filming. Kinberg doesn't divulge too much, but does promise we'll be seeing Wolverine like we've never seen him before: “It’s a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies.

Speaking with Kinberg at the X-Men: Apocalypse press junket in London, Collider, while unable to gain confirmation on Patrick Stewart's involvement, did manage to confirm a few early rumors that claimed the film would be rated-R and set in the future, which judging by the rough description of the film's tone, should make for a perfect fit: “I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that. I will agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumored to be a part of that film. It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.

A violent western starring Wolverine and directed by James Mangold, the man who helmed the excellent 3:10 To Yuma? This is shaping up to be really, really interesting and if everything works out, it could be one of the biggest treats of 2017.

I think this will be the dark horse of 2017.

I love Jackman as Wolverine. I really like Mangold. The first act of The Wolverine was perfect & the second act was good. Third act is where Fox came in and filmed the film.

Telling you guys right now, we're getting some iteration of the costume in this film.

Ain't no way Hugh is doing his final Wolverine film and NOT putting on the costume.

@MattBellissimo - Really do wish he got his chance to be in the MCU, just reading his comments and how bad he wants to fight those characters in a huge ensemble film.....sucks :/. You know he'd get his costume in the MCU as well. Very excited for this movie either way, huge fan of Jackman and his love of the character and Mangold is a great director.

@MattBellissimo - Kind of a weird timing for it. I don't remember him ever wearing any suit in the Old Man Logan story line.

@Kman - As far as I remember it was only present in the flashbacks. However, while the film is loosely inspired Old Man Logan, it certainly won't follow it, there's no way it can.

@jerryblake - totally doing dark phoenix. They set it up in X2 and then Ratner blew it. If we can get a Jean struggling with the Phoenix Force that invades her instead of some internal flaw I will be happy.

R-Rating, you say?!

The R-rating is going to be so amazing on screen, can't wait to see what they do with Jackman. My only concern is that a lot of younger fans love Wolverine and having them alienated from this film (given that all the others have been PG-13 unlike deadpool) kind of bugs me a little. Apart from that this should be one hell of a CBM
