A lot of people weren't happy with the final design that was used in the movie for Apocalypse, with some even firing shots at it comparing it to Ivan Ooze from the Power Rangers. Well, conceptual artist Jared Krichevsky was given the opportunity to offer his own inspiration for the villain, which you can see in the images down below. On his site, he explains that "Age of Apocalypse was on of my favorite X-Men series and I was a huge fan of the 90's toon, so this was a lot of fun to do."
