An In-Depth Interview With Michael Fassbender On Magneto!

On What Drew Him To Play A Character Like Magneto:

"Hopefully I won't disappoint the fan base out there, because I know that what Ian McKellen did sort of latched onto a lot of imaginations and was very successful. But what drew me was the script and Matthew Vaughn and the fact that James McAvoy was going to be playing young Xavier. I thought it was a fresh take on the whole story. I've never been a big comic book enthusiast, but I thought it was an interesting concept to go back to when they were both friends and initially came together."

On Whether He Was Given A Pile Of Comic Books For Research:

"Yes, it did, and I got knee-deep into them once I got involved. That was all my source material, because it's all there in the comic books in terms of a backstory and formulating the character. I did also watch the other films and took notes from those, but took most of my references from the comic books."

On The Complexities Of The Character:

"He's such a complex character, really, and the idea of him being a villain is interesting considering his history (Lehnsherr is a Holocaust survivor who lost his family in the camps, and later lost his wife and daughter) ... he's a very solitary individual, and the pain and grief that's gone on even before we meet him in this film is an interesting pool of information to draw from, in coming up with this Machiavellian character for whom the ends justified the means. You can see where he's coming from. Human beings don't have the greatest track record in what they've done throughout history, so his point of view is, "Well, we are the next stage of evolution -- (humans) are to us what Neanderthals were to Homo sapiens."

On Whether This Is A Prequel Or Reboot:

"I think the fundamentals are the same. The main thread of the story is still the same. I don't really know how to answer the question because I haven't seen this one yet, so I haven't had a chance to watch it side by side with the other ones and see if they're relative to each other. Hopefully they are, I think, but also we want to do something fresh as well and open a whole new chapter with this without totally betraying what was laid down before."

On The Mutants Of The Movie:

"The cool thing about this movie is that I think it does deal with each individual mutant, and the ones they've chosen are all very much individuals and unique personalities with unique gifts. What's interesting is that we've gone back to a period where the mutants don't know that there are other people out there like them. They just think they're freaks and outcasts from society ... all of these new characters are fearful of their gifts and uncomfortable and misplaced in society, so hopefully when they all sort of come together and realize they're not alone and feel more comfortable in their own skin, that's a discovery for all the characters that you experience."

On The Sets And Costumes Of X-Men: First Class:

"There's a scene where they just sort of transformed this hall in London into Buenos Aires Airport, and I just looked around this mock airport and said to myself, "My God, I've just had a feeling of being in the '60s." From the colors to the costume designs to the production design itself, there's a sort of nostalgia in the air when you look around the room. It's just from my own perception of the '60s, and all that came with it in terms of the music and the fashions and so forth, but all of that comes across in the visual references that we all have. All of that is there to encapsulate the feeling of that era, for sure."

"As for our costumes, we went back and forth on so many things. We added things that worked in the comics, took them away again, and stripped them down again. ... When it came to the Magneto suit, you know, there's various stages of what has been done with it, but you will have something that is traditional to the comics. There is a helmet (laughs), which is of course essential to keep Charlie-boy out of my head, and the colors are also kept traditional to the comics, that sort of red and purple. I don't know if I'm giving you too much, but I'll say it anyway (laughs)."

On Winning Back The Trust Of The Fans With This Movie:

"I certainly hope so. My face is gonna be up there and my name is gonna be attached to it. I've got a lot of faith in Matthew, and everyone is very passionate and working very hard to earn back any trust that's waned a little bit from the last film."

Thanks guys. It really is great to finally hear from him, and what a great interview this is. They literally cover everything that we could possibly want to know!

ROR: Yeah, I hate to admit it, but this really does make me feel a little better about the movie. As you know, I'm a big Michael Fassbender fan (I've wanted him to play Captain Britain for a while) and he's the only thing about X-Men: First Class that I've always been 100% positive towards. Reading this interview has sort of brought me back around to thinking this might be a great movie, but bad adaptation. If nothing else, it's caused my fanboy rage to subside a little, lol! :D

Fassbender is gonna be a bad ass villain. I'm disappointed with that recent pic that leaked, but after Fassbender's Bad Assery in 300 I am obligated to see this.

This is the first thing I've read about this movie that makes me interested. I like what he says about his suit. That coincides with what MTV is reporting about that photo earlier being bogus. He was in a yellow and blue suit in that.

This is probably the only superhero movie I haven't felt any excitement for at all. But who knows, could be a great surprise. Most likely go see it anyways.

so nothing drew him to play the character magneto. just the fact that he gets a paycheck and gets to act alongside mcavoy. mad props though for actually using the comics as his reference material unlike someone........cough(singer)

I'm still reserving judgement until I at least see the trailer. But I loved Fassbender in Inglourious Basterds, this is his third comic book adaptation I believe. Let's hope this one doesn't end up like the last one tee hee

This gives me some hope. I'm still hoping this will be a good movie. I've given up on it being a good X-Men film, but with Vaughn, Fassbender, McAvoy, etc. on board....it has potential.

I like Fass very much as Magneto, but I'm just not enthused for the franchise anymore. I'm ready for a fresh take, a more accurate take, on X-Men. I'm tired of Magneto, as much as I love the character, after three films with him as the main villain I really want them to dip into the rest of the rogue’s gallery. To me X-Men has been a series of missed opportunities and short falls. I'm ready for the rights to pass from Fox's hands, and the direction and producing credits to leave Singer. I was very excited when I heard about Vaughn's involvement in First Class, but even that hope for something different has died as I've heard and seen more about this film. I won't go so far as to say the film will suck, because I don't know, I haven't seen it and truthfully I do hope the film is great. I just can't convince myself that it will be, I hope I'm wrong.

(Although I will defend Kelsey Grammer's portrayal of Beast until the bitter end).

THIS is why I have faith in this movie. Matthew Vaughan is an excellent directer, and while I do feel that most directors will sell out every once in awhile, I hope that isn't the case for this movie.

The comments by Fassbender and January Jones have hit the exact points I've wanted addressed (almost too perfectly, though, maybe... like they were rehearsed?).

I will definitely be seeing this film in theaters, and while I hope ALL of Marvel's exiled properties return to the fold, I still want the films that are made in the meantime to be well-made.

However, I will admit that he did star in that cluster[frick] "Jonah Hex". But, I still haven't seen that particular movie, and as such am still not prepared to write it off.

Even (maybe even especially) great actors pick crap films. Just look at Nicolas Cage. As I see it, actors tend to pick films more often for the parts, and not for the script as a whole.

But like I said, this film is by Matthew Vaughan and Jane Goldman, which is a totally different scenario than Brett Ratner. I'm still looking forward to this movie quite a bit (though maybe a little bit less so after that disastrous pic that was released today).

Whoa! Now that's how you sell a CBM! I still think this movie will blow dong but man is that guy saying all the right things! Did his research, wants to stay true to the character, admits the other film are big steaming stacks of shit. If only Joe Johnson sounded like this in his latest interview...I might not be so worried

I have always had a sneaky suspicion that this film will be really good...

...and I have absolutely no idea why I have thought that!!! No evidence. No facts. Nothing whatsoever to back me up!!

But there you go. I am an atheist and yet when blind faith is required I seem to throw it completely in the direction of this movie!! :oP

so he says's a couple of words that could be utter bullshit and a lot people are less worried what the [frick]? more or less every actor say's the same shit about how they found the character to be complex and all the other BS. I knew from the start that Fassbender was a great choice for Magneto, the movie is going to be bad adaption of the x-men comics but whether its going to be a bad movie is still debatable.
