Matthew Vaughn Reveals Scrapped Plans For X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Trilogy And Who He Was Going To Cast As Wolverine

Way back in 2011, Matthew Vaughn rebooted the X-Men franchise with First Class, and he's now revealed plans for a trilogy which would have culminated with Days of Future Past. Read on for details...

X-Men: First Class didn't exactly stick all that closely to the comic books, but it was still pretty fantastic and successfully told the origin stories of Professor X, Magneto, and Mystique. Unfortunately, director Matthew Vaughn didn't return for the sequel, which was instead helmed by Bryan Singer.

Since then, the franchise has jumped ahead by a decade with each new instalment (despite its cast not ageing), and the filmmaker has now revealed what he originally had planned for his trilogy.

"My plan was First Class, then, the second film was new young Wolverine in the '70s to continue those characters, my version of the X-Men," he revealed. "My finale was gonna be Days of Future Past. That was gonna be my number three where you bring them all… because what’s bigger than bringing in McKellen and Michael and Stewart and James and bringing them all together?"

He added that Fox loved the idea of bringing the two casts together so much, they immediately wanted to jump to that, a decision which led to him walking away from X-Men: Days of Future Past

"If you flip that ’round even it would have been better," Vaughn said, explaining that he wanted to introduce the new Wolverine first. "Hollywood doesn’t understand pacing. Their executives are driving 100 miles-per-hour looking in the rear-view mirror and not understanding why they crash."

As for who he wanted to cast as this version of Wolverine, the filmmaker revealed that he was eyeing Tom Hardy for the role. "When I finished the “Days of Future Past” script with it ready to go, I looked at it and said, 'I really think it would be fun to cast Tom Hardy or someone as the young Wolverine and then bring it all together at the end.'"

It's heartbreaking that this never happened, especially when the franchise has declined in quality over the past few years (Dark Phoenix is expected to be a critical and commercial flop).

Do you wish Vaughn could have directed his X-Men trilogy?

Wolverine ages so slowly that a Wolverine in the 70s would still look like Wolverine now. Unless he meant he wanted to recast for the older Wolverine too.

@newhire13 - Not to mention that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine told Charles and Erik to go f#@% themselves in the 60’s. Then in the 70’s he would look like Tom Hardy, and then back to Jackman in the Future?

Clearly this wasn’t the idea at the time he made First Class.

He should've been able to do his trilogy. First Class was the most X-Men this franchise has ever been. Idk about the Tom Hardy shit tho.

Should have just used First Class as a soft reboot

While a fun and enjoyable film, first class was a terrible Xmen movie. The only shining caveats of glory was that it gave us James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender's friendship, and it washed the taste from our mouths from Last Stands dumpster fire legacy. Aside from that it was fun and charming for the most part but I absolutely hated what they did with 80% of the characters.

The recasting Wolverine thing is a bit odd, since he put Hugh Jackman in a cameo in First Class. Plus Hugh is only 9 years older than Tom Hardy, so it’s not like you’re even going with a “young” wolverine there.

He would have [frick]ed up the continuity even more than it already was, by A) recasting Logan as "younger" and B) just having Logan with the X-Men in the 70s to begin with.

There would literally be no point for Days of Future Past as he'd already be soft rebooting it with that second film idea anyway. I'm just curious if Vaughn actually realises that, because it seems like he doesn't.

I enjoyed first class, imo, one of the bettwe FoXmen movies to date. Not sure if he needed to recast Wolverine, but, i love Tom Hardy and think he would of knocked it out of the park... Hey, at least we can all rejoice now that it's over and they are back home where Lord Fiege can make them great again

Vaughn had "old" Wolverine in First Class set in 1962, so how could he justify having a recast "young" Logan in the sequel? Unless he was planning to go the Benjamin Button route that would have [frick]ed up the X-timeline even more than it already was.

@Skrull - no respect for source material or the other sub-par movies that came before it

@Skrull - I believe he said it was his plan for a trilogy, likely before they put that cameo in First Class.

I have no doubt it was some big wig producers idea to add the scene

@DVonShakari

I understand not liking the movies but let’s not act like the MCU is incredibly source accurate. Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, Ragnarok, Planet Hulk.

Let’s be real

@regularmovieguy - I never look for 100% accuracy but a faithful adaptation is what was missing from nearly all of the X films

@DVonShakari

If they’re good movies it shouldn’t matter imo. Fox gave us some really great movies and some dog shit movies. They also paved the way for Kevin Feige to start the MCU.
