Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones) Receives High Praise From His Last Exorcism Director

Jones, whom we will see as Irish mutant Banshee in X-Men:First Class, is bigged up by director Daniel Stamm, who worked with him on The Last Exorcism ..

While watching The Last Exorcism I was very impressed by the entire cast. Jones really stood out to me, even though at the time I didn't recognize his name and put it together that he was cast as Banshee in Matthew Vaughn's First Class.

While talking to MTV, the director of that movie, Daniel Stamm, was full of praise for the young actor..

"He was a real find, because I wanted the character to be slightly off, but where you couldn't really pinpoint what's off about him. There's some weirdness about him, and his doesn't have that in real life at all. He's the smartest guy."

"He's going to be great in 'X-Men.' I can promise you that. I can't wait. But it's going to be very different than this movie."

Stamm also revealed how Jones got on in his audition..

The first time he came in to audition for us, I had the feeling, 'I found my guy, but he's completely stoned!' We said goodbye and I was like, 'Dammit, he would have been so good.' I ran after him in the street and said, 'Caleb, can we just wait for two, three hours and do it again?' And he said, 'Why?' And I said, 'Because you are completely stoned!' He said, 'Oh man, that always happens to me! My manager is always screaming at me for that. I always come across stoned when I improvise. I'm not stoned at all! Let's do it again!'"

"And we did it again and the same thing happened again. He had the slurred speech, sometimes he didn't answer straight away, and he wouldn't look at me. So I said, 'Let's just do one problem at a time. Why don't we first have you enunciate? It doesn't matter what you say, just enunciate to get rid of the slurred speech.' So we did that and that worked. Then I said, 'Just look at me. Stare at me the entire time,' and he did that. And the third thing was just, 'Immediately answer me. It doesn't matter what you say. Just be quick.' And suddenly it was brilliant."

Yeah sure, Caleb, an excuse to get away with a few sneaky puffs before auditions I'm sure! Seriously though, it's an interesting insight into the casting of yet another young actor in First Class that is being hailed as somewhat of a revelation along with Winters Bone star Jennifer Lawrence. Between an established group of fine character actors and these young up and comers, Vaughn has assembled quite an ensemble. Still, It will probably suck because Cyclops isn't in it. ;)

I'm sure this kids a great actor.

I just hope for his careers sake First Class is a decent film. Then again, other not-so-great movies have helped launch talented young actors before so... If its bad, it might at least do that.

I saw him in Last Exorcism and to his credit he was really good. He really seemed odd yet intimidating as well as potentially dangerous. In fact everyone in THE LAST EXORCISM was a really good actor.

FIST ASS, [frick]s [frick]s, fox, ass, fox, ass fist.

That cover ya Lee?;)

Yeah I thought the acting in Last Exorcism was class. The film itself was also very good although it wasn't what I was expecting and the end was kinda silly.

Bah! They can fill this movie with the greatest actors alive, but it'll still be a complete and utter insult to the comic books! I have a feeling that this will be a good movie (Matthew Vaughn directing almost guarantees it) but as I said before, it'll be the worst COMIC BOOK movie ever. :P

it won't suck because 2 characters aren't in it so then avengers will suck to because hank and wasp r not in it and the captain America will suck to cause the invaders are not in it if you think like that then you will also think like that about these movie.

I think Josh means worst adaptation ever..not a travesty of a film like Catwoman. It could well be, but that still remains to be seen! I'll wait until the full plot details emerge and we get a trailer.

Intruder, he's actually 20! I know he looks about 12, but seriously, this dude has chops. I think he'l do a great job. I just really hope he has an accent. We Irish don't have enough super heroes!

Caleb landry jones was the only non believable actor in last exorcism thats not to say he can't act maybe it was the director's fault? Just don't have him do a dodgy "oirish" accent please!!!

two thirds of the team are the original founding members in the avengers movie.

they've got one in x-men fist ass the beast.

so thats why so much hate.

ROR: Thanks for clearing that up - worst adaptation is exactly what I meant! :) It has the potential to be a good movie but as I've said to you before, the fact they're deviating so much from the comic books leaves the fanboy inside me seething! After all, major changes from the source material are rarely for the best...

deadpool- yea i know is most of the team but still in x3 you never meet jean until 1969, wolverine origin you never meet cyclops until 1970 or 80 something, so they going the right route. and still you say a movie suck without a character then u shouldn't only talk about 1 movie talk ABOUT ALL OF THEM THAT THEY ALL GOING TO SUCK IF THEY DON'T HAVE CHARACTERS THAT ARE SUPPOSE TO BE IN IT.

With all the multi-verses in DC and Marvel comics, why do you hard-core guys rail about being true to the source material? Why can't the movie universe simply a different incarnation of Earth? I mean, that's how I viewed each of the different versions of the X-Men cartoons, which is how I got into comics in the first place.

The Last Exorcism was so well made. Not mindless gore like lots of horror films, but really twisted, disturbing, make you think about life kind of movie! http://bit.ly/a15ueX

@CasualFanatic, Re: different incarnation.
And that is just fine to a point. The Marvel films like Iron Man etc. have done just that; veered away from the original material, actually adding in some elements from the ultimate line as well as entirely new touches.
But it is important to keep at least close to the source material if one is claiming to be doing an "X-Men"(or any other character/team etc.) film not clearly spelled out as a "remix" version.

I can happily sit back with films like (the newest) Iron Man and Batman, and see it as a different vision of the character and universe.
Go too far however and it feels like, not a variation, but a rip-off or parody, using the "good name" of the characters to sell what is really a different product.

And especially with the X-Men franchise; it felt like Fox was too focused on showing new and exciting characters, that it got in the way of the story. And the same seems to be happening with this "First Class" film (besides not even remotely resembling the series from which that title was taken.)

I have to agree to a point with Andrew Parker. I can fully accept them telling a story about the characters or condensing in a way their origins since we don't have forty or fifty years worth of story telling to catch up with in a two hour film. But when they essentially change the origins and characters then its not the ones we have grown to love reading about and it is a 'bait and switch' really. Though I do admit as a comic book fan hoping that all these movies are something that I will enjoy.
