EDITORIAL: Xenix Lists: Top 5 Reasons I Don't Want to See X-Men: First Class

My reasons why I don't want to see this film!

Editorial Opinion

Number 5:
Emma Frost Continuity **** Up.

Emma Frost appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, appearing around 18-27 years old. However, in X-Men First Class, she appears to be older than her apperance in Origins....which takes place forty years after First Class happens.

Not to mention, they decided to give Emma the exact powers she demonstrated in Origins.

And yes, I know what the recent excuse for this one is: 'But, Origins isn't canon anymore!!!' Even if that is true, people will still recognize the character, by their powers, not by their names. People won't remember her name, but they will notice that this person:

and this person:

happen to both have blonde hair, are in the X-Men series, and can turn their skin into diamonds. They will notice.

Number 4:
A Random Selection of Characters for the 'First Class'

When we heard they were going to be starting from the beginning of the founding of the school, Magneto and Xaviers relationship, naturally we all thought they would be doing the original five. However, for timeline reasons, they stook the film in the 60's, so the First Five couldn't be used, because that would make them about 60 years old in the modern day, without rebooting it.....however they ended up choosing characters that not only STILL disrupt the continuity by being too young or too old, they also picked characters that shouldn't have even BEEN there in the timeline!

Not to mention Darwin, who's powers are to constantly adapt to his environment to help him survive. He spontaneously develops powers to adapt to his environment, whether to help him fight, or run away.

So, why is Darwin a black guy, during the 1960's, one of the single most dangerous times in American History to be a black man?

Number 3:
General Mistrust in Fox Studios

We all saw how X-Men First Class had a trailer, and how people said it was good. This section is just to remind you that these films had good trailers too:

Number 2
Havok is Cyclop's Dad (Speculation)

Now, I know this is just a rumor, but allow me to requote this statement a few months back from Brian Singer:

“It wouldn’t physically fit for him to be the brother of Cyclops. We take some liberties on that. There are notions, but, um, I don’t want to give away certain interrelations.

This both states that, while Havok is not Cyclop's brother, they are still related. However, since this is in the 60's, the only possible way that they could be related, that would be a major spoiler, is if Havok were Scott's father.

I have been looking around to see what others think of this idea, looking at other forums. Some people cast it off, saying that it's rumor, or other ridiculous statements, such as:

'It's a reboot, so it doesnt matter!' - False. By using shots of Patrick Stewart and the original Magneto helmet in the recent trailer, they solidly connect this film to the original series.

'They're step-brothers!' - How the hell is that even possible? That would either require, A: Scott's Parents adopting someone who, around the time Scott was born, would be 40-something, or, B: That Havok's parents adopt Scott, which would make Havok STILL 40 when Scott's born, and make his parents be adopting a child when they're at least 80 years old.

But the number one, absolute reason I do NOT want to see this movie, is:

Number 1:
They don't suit up until the END OF THE MOVIE. (Reasonable Speculation)

Now, before you all go off on me like a bomb, I will support my argument fully.

Exhibit A: Fassbender Commentary.

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/joshw24/news/?a=29937

In a recent commentary on the trailer, Fassbender, who plays Magneto in the film, said that they don't spend a lot of the movie in the costumes, and that moment is where they come together as a team. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean they don the suits at the end of the movie, per se, but look at the other evidence:

Exhibit B: Blue Beast

Now, as you can clearly see, Beast is in the X-Jet, wearing the yellow suit, in his mutated form. It's safe to assume that Beast's mutation happens at the very earliest in the middle of the film, so the plane scene MUST take place during the second half of the movie. Again, this doesn't exactly say that it's at the END of the movie, but still, take a look at this final exhibit:

Exhibit C: Magneto's Helmet

Now, ignoring the win of the helmet design, you can clearly see that this is Magneto in the helmet, turning on Xavier and the others. In the background, albeit faded, you can see a tree, on what appears to be a beach.

In what no doubt is the same scene, set pics have shown a crashed, broken X-Jet, on a beach, with the same such trees:

This means that, since Magneto turns evil at the end of the movie, it must mean that the team wears their suits only at the end of the film.

And, I know what most of you are thinking, and, unfortunately for us all, I thought of that, too.

I believe, sadly, that this, too, is at the very end of the film. Since obviously Magneto dons this suit AFTER becoming evil, and if the scene of him turning on Xavier is at the end of the film.....then there probably won't be much of this suit to see, outside of maybe a scene or two.

And it's not as though Fox hasn't done this kind of thing before. Remember Reynolds as Wade Wilson, and Emma Frost in the Origins TV spots, seeming to be major characters, but only being around for a scene or two in the actual movie?

That concludes my article. Feel free to comment below!

for [frick]'s sake dammit. for the last time: emma from origins is the daughter of emma from first class. it has been stated before. of course that would make emma from first class the mother of silverfox too, and subsequently wolverine's mother-in-law. origins IS canon. don't be ridiculous...

This is going to be a really unfaithful and almost certainly awful film. I'm going to LOVE it.

5) So does that also mean the audience will think Azazel is Nightcrawler because he can teleport and hhas odd colored skin. I think by now the audience knows that in the world of X-men, different mutants can have similar powers. I mean Emma's diamond skin in Origins and Emma's diamond skin in X-men: first Class look completely different. Also Colossus has the ability to harden his skin to a metallic/shiny state. I don't think people will make the connection or care about Emma in origins to First Class.
4) Okay Emma in a way disrupts the timeline but whoelse? and of course there not going to have the 5 you want in a movie set in the 60's. That would throw off the contiuity even more, and would give you another reason to complain.
3) Actually the X3 trailer just showed a bunch of action scenes (which is what the Thor trailer did and is why I think Thor might fail), but origins did look good although First Class' trailer looks evn better. Well, you know what they say "Third times the charm".
2) Did you think he could be his uncle? but if he was his dad so what it's not like Cyclops' dad would even appear in these movies. Also, do you know what a step-brother is? because it doesn't sound like you do.
1)So what if they only have the suits for the last act? At least were getting costumes. They didn't have costumes in X2, but people love that movie anyways. If this movie is a success, though, there is talk for a sequel which could have more "suit time" in it.

hmm...well we already knew this...just going to have to enjoy it as a movie rather than a comic adaption...I know it will be a good movie.

Xenix did you really delete tabs' comment? thats not cool...dont post an article if you dont want to hear what people have to say...

@Xenix:
4)How do you know Beast isn't the proper age for First Class he had all that fur in X3 and he was in politics. People as far up as he was in poltics normally are on the older side.
3) Yes, but the first two movies didn't suck (imo) and the last two did.
1)Venom is definitly a character. There is a big difference between a character and a costume. Characters have more depth than costumes and characters actually do things.
p.s. I didn't think I needed to comment on the 5th and 2nd.

@Xenix
i believe that you have your timeline a little disrupted when it comes to XMO: Wolverine. it took place in the '80s because Logan's memory loss occured 16 years before X-men.
when it comes to Emma Frost, no one called her that in the film. not even Kayla. in the credits she is called Kayla's sister/Emma. the only time she was referred to as Emma Frost was in a thirty second tv spot no one remembers.
going by their own continuity, they have to choose different characters than the original five. i know this erks fans but i got over it when they put Wolverine in the first film.
although i do agree with you on the trailer bit. they can be a LITTLE misleading.
as for Havok, the term innocent until proven guilty applies. until their is an announcement i ain't buying that. although Singer stated that fans will get a kick out of how they manage the relationship so we'll have to wait and see.
now i believe they'll suit up at least twice. because if you think about it logically, Charles and Erik basically formed what will become the X-men. from the footage shown, they have a lot of influence on the Cuban Missile Crisis. but in that scene, not once did he wear the helmet. i beleive that when he sees what the Hellfire Club want, and mankin'd constant war with itself that he loses any and all desire for reconciliation.
most of your opinions are well founded and i hope to see you proven wrong and once again see Fox create an epic CBM. because we all know that Marvel will not be getting the rights back any time soon. :(

Let's see, X-men was first published in 1963. When first printed, the team was made up of teenagers... right? so let's say 15 to 18 years old... following? We are now in 2011, so no one in the team would be under 60 years old today. Last I lookeed, Jean grey didn't look like a granma. My point is : continuity has been screwed up for a long time, much before the first movie came out. I'm just going to watch an action movie filled with people with superpowers, much like a comic book, but in live action. Anybody feel the same?

@Xenix
you just proved my point. the only time she ever goes by Emma Frost is in the TV spot. you actually think regular movie going audiences are going to remember that???? or do you think they'll automatically start jumping on Youtube???

@Xenix a lot of parents call their children the same thing as themselves. Maybe Emma Frost in the X-Men movieverse called her daughters Kayla and Emma Jr.

Here in the UK we didn't get that Emma Frost X3 TV spot (at least not on any channels I watch) So with that in mind I don't think any of us can officially state that that WAS Emma Frost in Origins (which wasn't set 40 years after First Class it was only 20ish)

However, thank you for actually structuring a reasonable argument and not just [female dog]ing about it (doesnt happen here often!) I do disagree with your argument but at least you developed it!

PS: If you don't want to see it then don't, don't feel obliged just because its a CBM! ;)

Not sure what all the continuity problems are in the X-men Movie Universe - but very happy to be told what they are.

I haven't spotted anything too crazy yet. Not in terms of peoples ages (except maybe moira mactaggert - she looked a little too young in X3)

The fact I've waited many many years to see a FIRST CLASS movie and they come up with this INSULT of a movie boils my X-MEN blood! :)

That MAGNETO ORIGINS needed to be made, a deep dark complex movie with ERIC (FASS).

Now that could've been something!

WeaponX1825 @ We know...

Also WHITE QUEEN is not her own Mother and the one First class X-Men they did include, they made him into a Thunder Cat, they couldn't even get that right!

Anyways cannot wait for: THOR, GREEN LANTERN ,CAPTAIN AMERICA and DREDD!

Hell I'll even take that CONAN over this!

Ghola @ Damn...

Yeah, even GENERATION X TV MOVIE got that right lol!

I like the helmet, pity they couldn't actually use that one in X1 to X3, I never liked the movie version.

I bet we haven't heard everything yet, I bet someones someones Grandmother or something yet.

Only movie I reckon they might get right is THE WOLVERINE if they keep it to the basics and plenty of Ninjas in Japan.

Anyway, bottom line is I can't enjoy a movie thats spitting in our faces, a couple of little changes are okay but not a cluster [frick] load of big changes. No, this is an INSULT to the rich Marvel's X-Men History we all know and love.

X3 and Origins was bad enough, 3 strikes and your out! : D

This film is going to f%cking ROCK!!! It's going to make Singer's X-Men look silly. The music for the trailer is bad@$$ too. I'm not sure why people are criticizing Magneto's helmet?? Fassbender's going to be awesome in this!

wolverine was set during 3 Mile Island incident around 1979. If XFC is set around the Cuban Missle Crisis then it 1962. That's still 17 years seperating the 2 films.

THANK YOU this article was great. I'm only seeing the movie for Magneto who looks bad ass.

I still think the team should of been

Beast, Forge, Bishop, Marrow, Banshee and Changeling.

1) All these characters besides Marrow are generally portrayed as some of the older X-men in the comics.

2) None of them cause any problems with the continuity of the X-men movies because they are all completely new. Meaning Havok, Mystique, and Emma Frost.

3) All of them are better then the girl named Angel who shouldn't be named Angel.

4) These are all powers we generally haven't seen before.

*sigh* It used to just be the comments section around here that was like the stereotype of bad fanboy asperger syndrome, now it is the articles too. Way to make us all seem like anal retentive 12 year olds who don't understand the concept of interpreting different materials for different mediums.
