James McAvoy, who is portraying young Charles Xavier in "X-Men: First Class",a prequel to the original trilogy that will be directed by Matthew Vaughn, talks about his portayal of the character and how it will differ from Patrick Stewart's:

"I'm basically going to try and bury Patrick's performance (LAUGH)."

McAvoy talks about the fun behind the prequels:

"I think the fun about these films, when you go back and you either reboot or do a prequel, is you get to see how people became who they are. That means that you have to do them differently and by the end of the movie you have to do them the same way. The interesting journey is what happens to them, what changes them, what makes them evolve — not just mutate, but emotionally and psychologically evolve."

"They wanted me to have hair," he said. "They didn't want me to go bald and I walk as well."

"I would suggest by the end of the movie and the start of the next movie, it'll be more like what Patrick does," said McAvoy, adding, "Or maybe not. Maybe it will still be in a period of flux, if there is a new movie.""

"X-Men: First Class" will open June 2011.

well after this one i hope it picks up were the professor has recruited cyclops even if it is still mcavoy and they need to use the sentinels, sinister, apocalypse, beak, chamber, husk, glob herman, mammomax, anole, rocklide, and omega red.then get on with x-men 4,and 5 back to back with the original x-men and gambit, and cyclops return or im uninterested and marvel needs the rights back. this is the only way i would be interested in the x-men film anymore. i am getting tired of being fed this crap when the real x-men are cyclops,nightcrawler,iceman,colossus,gambit,rogue,wolverine,angel,beast,storm,pro-x,banshee,jean grey, and have other x-men under there training like angel salvador and the rest i mention above. they fought off the humans weapons the sentinels, and evil humans like stryker, and john sublime, and fought villain like sinister, apocalypse, and magneto and his brotherhood the real blob, the real juggernaut, toad, quicksilver, scarlet witch, the real sabretoothe, avalache, mimic, and others. its a shame they have to go back and not use the real X-MEN. marvel needs the rights back so we do get the real X-MEN.

Sooner FOX loses this franchise the better we all are, I 4 one am not giving them a cent, anyone that does is helping them make more sh1te and we'll never get the X-universe back where it belongs to make amazing movies of our beloved heroes!

IF ppl don't understand try reading an X-MEN: FIRST CLASS comic book or the original series!

Oy... Thewalking I could get on board with but without being bald this isn't xavier. Her lost his hair at a very young age, like high school I think. I know movies don't follow the comics directly but something as iconic as Xavier's baldness is just...ugh.

Xavier was bald by the time he graduated high school, which could still work with the direction they are taking this film, being they are going to be teenie Xmen, but considering Xavier started college at 16...yeah...that could be pushing it. ;-) Xavier didn't lose the use of his legs until he was done with 2 years of college and was out of the Army, so that part doesn't bother me. That being said, McAvoy could only dream to come close to being Patrick Stewart.

Taboo@ I don't know, we know quite a bit about this movie. Enough for me to know it is nothing I am interested in. Teen Xmen and those cast for the movie don't interest me much. The timeline and storyline don't interest me much. Leaving out the core members of First Class for the movie First Class doesn't interest me much. The studio using the excuse of Cyclops would be too young and then having his younger brother in the movie shows how moronic the powers at be are.

The vast array of images from Cap show us that it is going to be very authentic to the period, which is very good. That was a stunt double on a moped, so I am not going to judge a movie based on that. The cast for Cap is outstanding. More for me to be excited about then First Class as I am not that impressed with their cast. Also add in the fact Cap is being done by Marvel and not Fox... seals the deal.

Actually from a talent alone standpoint I think First Class is looking much better than Cap. Director, cast, writer. Obviously as an adap its taking more liberties but since I an yet to see a Joe Johnston film I like, that has me nervous.

This is why Marvel should do all the Marvel Comicbook movies.. 20th Century FOX needs to stop all of this bullshut.. Someone said in this thread that they hope it fails... I'm starting to feel the same..

Taboo@ Well, I personally like the cast of Cap much better so far. I guess I am older, so I am going to sway toward the older experienced cast as opposed to all the young roles being cast in First Class. :-P I would definitely take Evans over McAvoy (of course I have seen most of Evan's movies, while many don't have a clue of the serious roles he has played) and I would take Weaving in a landslide over Bacon. Bacon??? Really? Wow... Weaving is a much more diverse actor than Bacon. For those that want to automatically type cast him into a certain type of role, I suggest you watch more of his films, in particular The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Umm...you do realize that WWII is the basis of this movie and WWII was not fought on American soil. C'mon now Taboo. Where the movie is filmed shouldn't matter anyway as long as it looks authentic. They are saving money by filming MOST of the movie overseas and that means more bang or the buck...which in my eyes...is a win!

haha, Mr Hateful The Rocketeer was ok, entertaining enough. I'm not a Yank so maybe some of the flag waving was lost on me. But thats it, all of his films look great, he(or at least his cinematographer) has a good eye. Thats about it. He's not an actors director. he fails to connect his characters to an audience on an emotional level, and I find his work almost as soulless as Michael Bay's. With a film like Cap, thats very worrying to me.

The cast thing, I'm with Taboo that McCavoy ..and Fassbender for that matter outmatch anyone involved with Cap acting ability wise. And although Vaughn's younger cast are relatively inexperienced, they are all getting rave reviews from critics on the stuff they have done.

Of course, nothing is certain. They both could suck or they both could rule of one and not the other. Just my opinion from what we do know.

Taboo@ I am saying the financial decisions are important when making a movie. The more money you can save on production location costs and taxes, the more that can be poured into sets, actors, special effects and all in all that is a win for us movie fans. We can blame the politics and system here in the U.S. for losing movie locations to overseas. I don't fault the studio for that.

Sorry, but we all have our opinions and Bacon annoys me bores me to death. Don't care for him much. No, not in Sleepers or Murder in the First. He was alright. That's about all I have to say for him. The best thing I can credit him for is the 6th degrees of separation! :-P

i can see why people like McAvoy, but he just doesn't do much for me and judging from his ego on this project, I am not the least bit interested in seeing him as Xavier. That's just me though. To put it plain and simple, I am not interested in a younger generation Xmen movie right now. I'll probably rent it when it comes out.

Sigh Why are people even trying to defend this movie. The first xmen movies were decent at best and Wolverine was terrible. Singer is always trying to connect his movies to homosexuality and he made Superman seem like a wimp (Returns was an ok movie and I felt it was a good setup for an action pack sequel but people have the right to complain that we didn't even see superman throw a punch) I loved Kick Ass but Matthew Vaughn is not the next Chris Nolan or Jon Fraveu in comic book movies, He is more like Zack Snyder in my eyes. McAvoy seems arrogant and he will never beat Patrick Stewart as Xavier. I don't like the style of the xmen movies its like they are stuck in 1999-2000.
