Response to X-Men First Class Trailer Reaction

The long awaited trailer to the new X-Men movie made its online debut and the reaction was... mixed to say the least

This past week, the trailer to X-Men: First Class made it's debut on Facebook of all things. I gotta say that of all the comic movies coming out, this one was the one I was most curious about. When I first heard that a X-Men prequel was being developed I immediately figured it was just Fox trying to cash in on the series again, and after two less than stellar entries, I had enough of them. But then I heard that Matthew Vaughn had signed on to direct, and I'm a big fan of him. I liked the cast that was assembled for this one (minus James McAvoy, he's always been just "meh" to me) and I liked the 1960s setting. I kept waiting for a trailer because I was curious to see what this would look like.

When I first watched the trailer I was very impressed. It had solid mutant action and hints at what the main arc for Magneto and Xavier will be. I was curious to see what fandom was making of it so I checked the comments the trailer was getting. Many of them were... less than favorable. Then again it seems like every time a trailer for a comic book movie comes out, it gets mixed feedback (unless it's Captain America). I checked out the complaints fans had with the trailer, and here is my response to the common criticisms of it.

Criticism 1: The effects look terrible!

Once again, it seems like every time we get a new comic book trailer, we hear this. CGI effects will never look good, just accept it. Plus many times when we see a trailer, the effects are still unfinished, so most of the time we're seeing a work in progress. I'm sure the effects will get much better once June comes around, or at least passable.

Criticism 2: The suits look terrible!"

I don't think the 60s era suits look that bad, but they aren't amazing. It looks like we'll only see the X-uniforms in one scene so we should be good. I will say that I think Magneto's helmet looks silly from the pictures I've seen, but I thought the helmet looked silly on Ian Mckellen too.

Criticism 3: This looks like Magneto will be the best part of the movie

Is this really a bad thing? Magneto pretty much stole the first three movies as well, and it looks like he'll do it again, especially with an up-and-coming actor like Michael Fassbender playing him. It looks like Magneto's character arc will be the most compelling part of this movie, and it looks like even the filmmakers realized this and chose to focus the trailer mostly on him. I wouldn't be surprised if we find that the movie focuses more on Magneto than Xavier, but once again I don't think that will hurt the movie.

Criticism 4: This doesn't follow the continuity set out by X-Men Origins: Wolverine

This is also true, but both Bryan Singer and Matthew Vaughn openly admitted this, but from the looks of things, no X-Men movie is going to follow the continuity from Origins. Darren Aronofsky has stated that The Wolverine won't be a follow up to the previous film, and Ryan Reynolds has said that the Deadpool script ignores the continuity from Origins as well (thank god). I think that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is just being ignored by all forthcoming X-films, and I gotta say that's probably a good thing, especially since that movie didn't really follow the continuity of the previous movies either.

Criticism 5: It looks boring!

Really? Missiles, fighter jets, and submarines being lifted out of the water are boring? What is your idea of excitement then?

Criticism 6: It takes liberties with the comics!

People are complaining that this doesn't contain the original X-team of Angel, Beast,Ice Man,Cyclops, and Jean Gray. Well, first off, if this team was in the movie it would ignore the continuity set out by previous movies, and lead back to the last criticism. I've also heard criticisms about the character of Havoc and the (most likely true) rumors that he will be Cyclops' father and not his brother. This is a HUGE departure from the comics, I will say that. But I'm not really bothered by this change because I don't really care for Cyclops or any of the Summers family, so they can do whatever they want with them. But I can see why this big change is pissing off fans like it is, but I'll just say this: wait until you see how it is done in the movie before you condemn it.

Well there it is, my response to the most common criticisms of the trailer. Like I said, I was impressed with what I saw and I'll be there in June when this hits. This movie could easily turn things around for the X-Men series, but it can also be just another mark against it. The biggest opponents this film will have this summer is obviously the competition at the box office and the jaded fans. But I loved Layer Cake, Stardust, and Kick-Ass, Matthew Vaughn's previous films, and I want to see what he'll do with a bigger budget. Hopefully this will be a success and return the X-Men films back to respectability, because if not then our hopes lie with The Wolverine next year.

why the [frick] is origins NOT canon anymore? it is connected to X2. we have stryker and his son, and of course hugh jackman and patrick stewart reprising their roles. and emma frost from origins is the daughter of emma from first class.

@ intruder

well said,mate.

thats what i would of said, fox is ruining the best & most bankable comic franchise with every movie they release.

i hope "the wolverine" is great, like what i'm hearing so far.

-japan adventure
-darren aronofsky directing
-not a sequel,its a stand alone movie.

but fox better not interfere too much with this, let aronofsky show why his such a great director.

@ black panther

great point. People complain that First Class won't have the original team, but neither will Avengers. well, at least Cap wasn't on the original team. but i don't hear anyone complaining about that.

@ corndogburglar

the avengers has got 3 of the original line up (iron man, thor & the hulk)granted captain america didn't come along until issue 4,not having captain america is like not having superman or batman in the justice league movie neither of them where in the original line up if i remember correctly.

3 of the originals is still triple of what x-men first class features thats just got the beast.

the problem is the 60s. no member of the first film was born then except for beast and wolverine. if it wasn't in the 60s, it still wouldn't include the original five. at best, we would get cyclops, storm, jean and beast. like it was shown in the first film. but it would have to be set during the 80s. i am still optimistic about this film though. we all know it is a shitty adaptation, but if vaughn chose this over X3, then it must be a good film.

@ marvel

you're right, its still more. but we still haven't heard any word on whether or not Hank and Jan will be on the team in Avengers either. the bottom line is, people want to complain about X-Men First Class not having the right original team, but by all accounts, it doesn't look like we'll have the correct Avengers original team either. I just think its funny that people complain about X-Men, but not Avengers.

These are the movies, not the comics. Its also funny that people complain about First Class not being the correct original team, but they're perfectly fine with Magneto helping to form them in the first place? Any X-Men fan knows that Magneto had NOTHING to do with the formation of the X-Men. Why aren't they pissed about that?

it just seems like peole complaining for the sake of complaining. thats all i'm trying to say.

@Intruder - Correct! I think the yellow suits & Magneto's helmet are okay, but other than that I'm dissapointed. The FX for the SR-71 and sub looked okay to me though considering they are STILL filming this.

@Denn1s The fact that it's in the 60's is wonderful. The problem is the students in the "first class". If it was a reboot as it should be then all the original members would be in this.

@CorndogBurglar The Avengers may not be 100% accurate but the most important characters will be there and there'll be room to add them later. With First Class being in the Singer continuity we'll get like 3 more X films (more prequels or an X4) and likely never see the original characters again because of what came before (except maybe Iceman or Angel, but both were screwed up in prior films and have to be recast anyway!).

That's the frustration with this I think. First Class could be an okay film, even better than X2, but there's nothing to look forward to since they can't use the best characters. We've got like 4 decades in between the film cannon now so unless they do a "Next Class" film set like 25 years after to can include a younger Cyclops, Jean, Storm, etc there's no hope. And if they do that they'll need to recast Prof. X and Magneto again due to age and we'll still be screwed out of a proper Angel (WW).

Who wants an X4? Cyclops is dead, Storm likely won't be back, Iceman was a pussy and Angel just kind of exists with no purpose. Several of the X3 characters would likely be recast and at best we might get a better Colossus out of it! Maybe we'll get a payoff for the the Prof. X and Magneto cliffhangers, but who wants an 80 year old Magneto? Wolverine used to be cool, but since the first 3 films were centered around him and now we have Origins and another film to come it'd be too much of him! I'm just not thrilled with the direction this keeps going.
