Simon Kinberg Says X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Sequel Will Be "Epic, Mythic"

The co-writer of the follow up up to Mathew Vaughn's Mutant prequel calls the project "extraordinarily ambitious", and gives us an idea of how the screenplay is coming together..

We have already heard a few hints from Kinberg as to the direction the X-Men: First Class sequel may take, but now while speaking to Collider he goes a little more in-depth -- not plot wise (obviously!), but he does suggest that this sequel will take things up a notch in the drama/spectacle departments. He says he, Vaughn, and writing partner Jane Goldman have been given a bit of freedom to get creative because of Fox's success with not only the first film, but the likes of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and Chronicle too. He also says, most intriguingly, that the sequel will be "unlike the other X-Men movies and yet very much a celebration of the X-Men movies.".

He adds..

"We really went into it, Matthew, Jane and myself, just wanting to create a movie that was as… I’m very proud of First Class… as dramatic as that movie. I think it is as dramatic as that movie, but more epic, mythic in a way as well. So, there are ideas that we’ve started with that haven’t survived, there are ideas that we started with from conversations we had from making First Class that are going to be in the sequel."

Those ideas that haven't survived could well be the whole notion of Magneto being responsible for the death of JFK - something put forward by Vaughn when asked where he would like to see a sequel go, soon after the first film's release.

That's good to hear. Knowing for a fact, that the first movie was the best of the marvel movies in 2011. Really underrated.

I hope they move beyond the Magento vs. Charles storyline and give us some goddamned Sentinels with Bolivar Trask and maybe even a Mastermold.

Sentinels would be great. I mean hell, I've wanted them since the Original movies.

The continuity is just fine if you accept it as just a prequel to X-Men and X-2: X-Men United and completely ignore the events of X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Since that's what I do anyway, the continuity isn't an issue fir me at all :)

I could personally care less which new character they bring into this movie, I'm just glad the same people are involved, especially Matthew Vaughn and Michael Fassbender. Their careers are on fire right now

I would love to see them bring in Bishop or Cable. 2 of my favorite characters who desperately need the big screen treatment. And reintroduce Gambit sometime in the future because they butchered him in the Wolverine movie.

@Cipher - I agree. I like X-Men:FC better than Thor and Cap because of how impactful the emotional level was in that film. Great performance by McAvoy and Fassbender. They both should of been nominated as least IMO.

If X-Men 1 didn't use Senator Kelley he'd have been the natural antagonist funding Trask's experiment. It would have been awesome. You'd have Magneto's Brotherhood trying to infiltrate the government to stop their creation. The Sentinels would be released after the Brotherhood's attack and the X-Men come in to fix the problem. It ends with the Sentinels going ape-shit crazy on everyone and both Magneto and Xavier teaming up to stop the threat.

All I want for this sequel is one bad ass x-men, and one bad ass villain, keep the story grounded in the characters already established...For the X-Men I would like to see Gambit...he was introduced in Origins, I don't see why he couldn't be used for the sequel, since he wasn't in the original trilogy...And of course the bad guy should be Mr. Sinister!!..in the last movie (like in the comics) the original team can be taken out or captured, resulting in Charles having to create a new team to save his other one, which then can include Jean, Scott, and Ororo, and also explain why these characters weren't in the original trilogy...
Minotauro
Minotauro - 7/21/2012, 1:17 PM
@Gunsmith - EXACTLY! That's what he needs to look like next time around.

@Cipher - "I always loved Magneto, because he's just so much more layered than simply the villain and with the Sentinels his point of view would be justified to an extent and this would be a great way for the movie to make people look at Magneto."

Magneto isn't my favorite but he was voted #1 villian in front of the Joker on IGNs Top 50 CB villians. Yea, he is layered and tragic. He's going to have to show more evil in the second just so the excuse to kill Azazel. Azazel is the father of Nightcrawler I'm I right?

TheDudeRises
TheDudeRises - 7/21/2012, 1:21 PM
I think they're gonna try to do days of future past with JFK in the place of senator Kelley. It ends with the x-men stopping the brotherhood but not stopping the second gunman on the grassy knoll. Or maybe magneto was actually the magic bullet or some other bs. I'd watch it

"He says he, Vaughn, and writing partner Jane Goldman have been given a bit of freedom to get creative because of Fox's success..."

O.O

I think I see the new team lineup already:

- Shadow King
- Firestar
- Wild Child
- Sasquatch
- Polaris
- and introducing Illyana Rasputin as Colossus's older sister.

:D

Magneto was a beast though. They should have left it as X Men Origins: Magneto. Too bad the Wolverine flick scared them off of the idea.

Yea it would be nice if they explored more of the X universe. Go all out. Give us Mr. Sinister or Apocalypse. Sentinels for the sequel would be good!

I was quite disappointed with the first movie, just lost the plot for me but I am hoping the next one would be closer to the whole purpose of the x men. I certainly would love to see the original x men, as they really were and the struggles that really happened as they started out as a team. A back story of Nathaniel Essex would have been better, just working away in the back ground but no being known by anyone.

Logan, creed and maverick as well, in the background working on secret missions.

As much as I dislike reboots and origin stories I wish that they had gone full reboot with first class. They didn't and they have written themselves into a continuity corner. The ages of the characters are all over the place!! Emma is in first class and in Wolverine. Cyclops is younger than Jean and they would be too young for first class. Then professor x is shot in first class and walks with magneto to recruit a young jean in last stand. What a mess! If you're going to break continuity, break it all!

I think the problem is that they have no idea where they're going and they just write each movie individually.

I wish that they had started with the first class. The original five and the villian could have had Magneto. The best thing about Magneto is that he doesnt believe he is evil. He believes he is right and that mutants are not second class citizens.

Then in the next movie set up a threat big enough to bring in more mutants. Maybe the fear of mutants would lead to sentinels. Awesomeness!

In the third movie when anticipation was high, Magneto could come back with the brotherhood. Their goal to take out the Xmen and humans as well.

Fox has ALL mutants and related villains at their disposal. The problem is that they try to cram so many in (Xmen: the last stand) that their powers end up looking cheap and rushed. In this case, less is more!

The best thing about first class is Fassbender!

Fewer hyperbolic adjectives, more substance.

And I'd like to see Polaris as a new team member. It could add another layer to Magneto finding out he has a living relative who's a mutant and shares some of the powers he has.

I thought First Class was great. It more than made up for X-Men: TLS.

I can't wait for the sequel. They're pretty much saying it will be bigger than the first movie.

All I ask with these movies, is that they eventually build up to the real First Class team:

-Cyclops[ ]
-Beast[X]
-Iceman[ ]
-Jean Grey[ ]
-Angel[ ]

Well, I think that's what everyone wants. It would be a huge letdown if that never happened.
mgeoff88
mgeoff88 - 7/21/2012, 4:01 PM
@cipher Yah, otherwise they should have never titled it First Class. That would be a huge tease.

I just wonder how many First Class movies FOX wants to do? And if it will lead to a X-Men 4?

FOX just needs to keep putting more effort into these movies than with X3 and XMO: Wolverine. I really enjoyed First Class, so if they can keep making X-Men movies like this, I'll be a happy X-Men fan.
