"Teen Writer" Chosen to Script X-Men: First Class Movie

"Teen Writer" Chosen to Script X-Men: First Class Movie

This isn't good news. 20th Century Fox has chosen Josh Schwartz, the creator behind The O.C. and Gossip Girl, to write and possibily direct "X-Men: First Class." Marvel needs to get the X-Men franchise back from Fox before they kill it.

If the studios would just take a lesson from the successful comic book movies and hire fans of the genre, all would be well, but the elitiest asses who run Hollywood think they know everything. So, I guess it was just a matter of time before they chose someone like Josh Schwartz, the creator of several wildly popular, teen-skewed TV series like “Gossip Girl,” “The OC” and “Chuck,” to mess with Marvel’s mutants.

Fox obviously wants to resurrect the $1.2 billion dollar franchise, but even though the upcoming "X-Men: First Class" is supposed to focus upon younger X-Men, 20th Century Fox is making the wrong move by tapping Schwartz, who will probably make the characters vacant and petty like in all his other shows.

The deal doesn't say whether Schwartz will be directing the film, although that possibility hangs out there. Lauren Shuler Donner, who produced all of the previous X-Men films, as well as the upcoming "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," will produce this one as well.

There is no word yet what sort of story or which characters will be involved in the film, although Fox has been leaning toward using some of the younger characters introduced in the earlier X-Men films.

The comics debuted in 2006, and highlighted the early years of the original X-Men members: Cyclops, Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), Iceman, Beast and Angel.

GOD NO NO NO NO!!!!! X-men is my favorite marvel storyline, they seriously need to take it back from FOX, now!!!!! x-men 1 and 2 were good, but they had to go and F the third one up...this will be a travesty! they need to go forward in time, forget Magneto, that boat has left, they now need Apocalypse. This will be terrible if they do this

very bad news indeed.. the worst part is if it does as bad as it seems it would, we're gonna have to wait another 10 years for an attempt at a decent one ::sigh::

The Oc and gossip girl sounds lame and stupid. I thought Xmen 3 was ok but not as good as Xmen 1 or 2. Xmen should go further in the future instead of the past. Lets see mature heroes with mature problems instead of teenage kids. Remember Zoom and Skyhigh...Bryan Singer is trying to get his mojo back after his miserable superman movie. This movie sounds like it is going to suck badly...

i wonder how fox got a hold the x-men anyway. I know the cartoon seris did appear on fox in the 90s. That is the best version of them in cartoon format.

maybe an xmen flop is a good thing. I'm not sure if this one will but if it did maybe marvel would be in a position to buy the rights back.

Why not Joss Whedon? He can write good teenage stuff.

OMG
the whole movie's gona be about Teen angst and the x-men dealing with high school bullies with only maybe one, 30 second fight scene...Jesus, Hollywood likes to make stupid ass mistakes sometimes!!! They don't know what fans really want...hollywood sure is slow sometimes...

Oh boy...idk how I feel about this. I think I might like teen drama in the X-men, though I don't like it otherwise. Since I, you know, actually care about the X-men's feelings and don't give a crap about random ppl from gossip girl and and chuck.I'm a big fan of Smallville and their soap opera plotlines because I care enough about the DC universe characters.

I don't know if i'm making any sense....

Well, at least we're getting the X-men back. Even if it sucks, at least it's putting them back on the map. And at least we'll get to dress up and go to the midnight showing and see the characters we know and love on the big screen again. Even if we never see the movie again after that, lol!

if they really want to focus on a younger team they should make the new mutants, some great characters in there and the comic was pretty good for the most part..imagine seeing darkchild in a movie!

X-men 1 was like "ok good introduction to the characters"
2 "i think i see where youy are going with this"
3 "cyclops is dead?... and professor x??? WTF YOU KILLED JEAN GREY TOO!!!"
wolverine seems like its gonna be a 2 hour long cameo for other marvel characters and a whole lot of suck. i hope im wrong.

NOW they want to make angsty teen x-men?
what about making a gerneation-X film? i wanna see Chamber on the big screen!

OK, my turn.

X-Men: First Class is an AWESOME premise. However, being done by the geniuses from OC and what-not tend to make me shudder to the core. I am a HUGE fan of ALL comic book entites in the DC and Marvel Universe, not necessarily all of the films, but 98% of the characters and storylines.

Also, as for the X-Men movies. All 3 were good. You have to remember, this isn't canon, I mean, marrow was a guy in the 3rd movie, c'mon, not everything is going to be directly taken from the comics, there is a bit of creative license, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast was PERFECT! IMO of course. I liked the characters, the stories, oh and they killed Cyclops. AWESOME. He's a douche.

My buddy and I here at work have an ongoing series of games, the last in which i posed the question, "without taking away his powers, killing him, giving him more or different powers or rewriting his history, how would you make Scott Summers cooler?" Well, my buddies answer sucked, so I gave mine, and it goes something like this.

So I would have him go to Forge, make him some badass armor that absorbs massive amounts of solar energy and have him make a new helmet for Cyc that channels his optic blasts into 2 "guns"...already pissed off he teams up with Cable and I title it;

Father & Son:
Guerilla Warfare

They go around hunting people bent on the destruction of mutants, and mutants bent on the destruction of humans, maiming or killing them.

Anyone down for that? Sounded cool to me when I pitched it.

Well, the idea may not be "that" bad at all, though I think there is a guite big dilemma.
Under certain conditions: box-office, moviegoers' highly evolved visual expectations, try to get more believable characters and plotline, etc. (which is another solid subject alone), studios are giving an enourmous effort to make superman, batman and other stuff "darker" -and obviously be successful (Batmen TDK).
Under such circumstances, in what degree would it be feasible to make a "high school musical" essenced X-men movie?
Will it be the very-end of the x-men franchise? (I mean "end"er than The Last Stand - I know there isn't such a word but it's my writing right? right!)...

Please, not another franchise killer.

If Fox make it with bad boys and gals, kinda outcasts having lots of trouble, lots of kick-ass moves and pinch of character deepening, then I will give it some credit. But I'm not 100% sure anyway.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE THAT RAPE OUR HEROES?..I THINK TO REVIVE THE FRANCHISE, FOR ONE GET THE GUY THAT MADE IT, SINGER, HE SHOULDNT DO SUPERMAN, HE SHOULD DO XMEN. AND WHAT PEOPLE WANT IS APOCALYPSE,THATS WHAT PEOPLE WANNA SEE, WHAT KINDA LAMO IS WANTING TO GO BACKWARD,YOUR GOING TO MAKE A YOUNG WOLVERINE? A YOUNG EVERYONE? I don't know what the hell fox is gonna do with this. They are already bent on screwing up the franchise just by reading about the "charles and erik" movie. And now this...pathetic. You can pretty much count out wolverine of that movie because continuity wise, it wouldn't stick to the origins of the previous x-men movies. Then again, they're not sticking to continuity for the Magneto origin movie so...evidently...they seem like they're out to hurt Marvel or something. Like a jealous spouce that doesn't apreciate the fact that Marvel is doing it's own thing. Fox is going down. I'm just sad to see they're taking wolverine down with them. It sounds like a really good movie, i just hope it doesn't suck.

Whoa!!!! Have you guys ever seen Chuck? Chuck is one of the best TV shows on television right now. NOT A "TEEN" SHOW!!!
Just because someone has written other shows that I may spit upon (OC and Gossip Girl) does not mean he cannot write a good script for X-men.
Here is a quote from superherohype.com: "Resulting film would likely draw from elements of the Marvel Comic of the same name, launched in 2006, and enlist such characters as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, who have appeared prominently or made cameos in prior pics." This does not sound like a prequel to me, and it actually sounds good! I hope this is the case.
Fox did an excellent job with X-men 1 & 2. 3 was not the best, but it is still better than the majority of comic book movies out there (Brett Rattner is just a dumb *&^%). Wolverine looks awesome, and while I may be iffy about Magneto, I will give it a chance.
Fox wants to make money, they don't want to screw this up.

Shaman
Shaman - 11/20/2008, 10:13 AM
If it's "X-men first class" like the comics...it's a prequel and it's gonna suck. If it's "X-men's" first class as in the first class to graduate Xavier's school that includes all those marvelous characters the quote mentionned...now where talkin!!!

But that should be rightfully named "X-men: Gen X" or here's one for ya: X-grads. They could be supervised by Storm and Beast with probably a cameo by Wolverine... who knows! I guess the ball's in Fox's court, but i'd deffinitaly go see THAT!!!

Just for excitement's sake, throw in Traci Lords as the White Queen in there and i'll go see it once a week till it's out of theaters! She could be teamed up with Mr. Sinister at the beggining but seeing the error of her ways, she thwarts Sininster's plans helping the X-grads at the climax! Then for the ending, she could be made a fellow supervisor to the team assisting Storm and Beast...how's that for a movie?!?!?!

On a side note, when's Havok gonna come in the picture to fill Cyclop's shoes? Now that'd be KICK-ASS!!! (For the poeple who haven't read the thread about the Magneto Origins movie news)

Oh and Ratner's work on X3 looked exactly the same as Singer's. Filming wise it was just as good as the first two so stop blaming the shitty script on the director god damn it! It's like blaming your parents for YOUR faillures. You wrote the script, they just tried to direct YOU through it as best as they could! Granted some directors suck because they can't direct worth shit like GOYER or SCHUMAKER but that is not RATNER's case!

we cant have the guy from the OC directing one of the best movie franchises ever
he will turn into a crappy teen movie and DAT CANT HAPPEN TO WOLVERINE AND CYCLOPS AND ALL THE OTHER X-MEN
the premise is awesome but please, for the love of all that is good of superhero movies, dont make it a teen coming of age story we need more bad ass superhero movie IRON MAN awesome and Marvel corrected the mistake of the Hulk with the Incredible Hulk which was amazing now continue with the X-men and make them jus like the comics NOT LIKE THE OC OR THE SHIT SHOW GOSSIP GIRL p.s. PLEASE MAKE A AWESOME SPIDERMAN SEQUEL no more should i still be spiderman storylines please more action more spidey fights

No, not on the big screen. In a stand-alone comic book. I wouldn't do it on the Big Screen as it really wouldn't make any sense. Maybe a What If...? series or something.

Ooh, then i agree :) Actually, it would be cool for them to create a gun-totting crew with Cyclops, Cable, Bishop, Gambit and Deadpool as well. Where the future would revert back to Western spagetti times!
Demonwolf
Demonwolf - 11/20/2008, 3:04 PM
The only reason I hate on Rattner is because the feel of the 3rd movie. It did not feel like the first two movies. While he did not write the script, he did help select it...he helped edit the film...This was his vision, not Singers.
Small example: Jean could have looked so much cooler as the Phoenix. In X-men 2 Singer had the Phoenix effect show up...it was not even in the 3rd movie.
Rattner did a good job on Rush Hour 1 & 2. Rush Hour 3, Red Dragon, The Family Man, Money Talks all are mediocre films in my opinion.
I know it is not all Rattner's fault. The producers actually should shoulder most of the blame.

Ion, sounds like a fun.

What do you think of Cyke's new direction in the comics? Forming X-force and having them go kill people. Personally I think Cyclops's character has always been kinda lame, but I also thought his character was necessary for the team. He makes a great foil for Wolvie.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/20/2008, 3:13 PM
True, i do see you point here. The 3rd movie could've used more umph. The two first movies did seem like a huge build up for the third one and then... well we got what we got... dissapointment. Mabe Ratner didn't put much of "his own" into the movie contrairy to what Singer would've done. That guy films with passion. You all saw how passionate he was about Superman Returns... he freakin sounded like a kid at X-mas(:P). Pitty everybody at the HQ just turned away and left "the whole thing" up to him. He just got carried away. Something Ratner never does. And that's why X3 felt watered down. Good point.

Yes, Scott Summers is absolutely douchetastic. BUT, he is an awesome tactician, definitely WAS the moral center for the earlier versons of the team, definitely a good addition to the team as a whole.

In his newer, more "i'm a bitter child who doesn't like my one time surrogate father anymore, but now i've become him so i'm even more bitter...oh and hey, BTW, im screwin' Emma Frost" motif is kind of cool. I dig it...I just want him to go apeshyte one day and start accusing everyone of being to leanient on antimutants folks and just go nuts...Yea, him and cable and deadpool and bishop gambit, havok with Forge as their inhouse technician.

Man, everyone's gonna hate me, but I liked the OC. I dunno if anyone actually watched it or not, but I thought it was a decent show. The blond chick was a loser but the rest of it was okay. Besides, Seth was a kindred soul man! And he got the hottie AND he published his own comic!! I mean, that's pretty cool. I think Schwartz is okay, but I think the concept of making a prequel (if that's what they're doing) is stupid. Everyone is right that they need to move forward. X-Men three was HORRIBLE tho! I mean, whadda shytfest! And ION, I thought Summers was cool too, I mean, he acts kinda lame, but nnot everyone can be the anti hero. In the end, there has to be a boyscout!
IonParallax

He's a necessity, because yes, you must have the boyscout archetype. Still a douche though...

I agree X3 was awesome, it wasn't as character drivin with an in-depth storyline but the action was good and the more x-men, the merrier. And DurkinKnight yor're not alone I liked the OC too.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/21/2008, 6:53 AM
We need as much of a boyscout as we need an anti-hero and also as much as we need a douche. Cyclops be thy douche. That's who he is (a douche) and that's how we like him!

The only problem with x3 is the script. For a climactic movie, it did feel watered down. But i do agree the more x-men, the better it is.

I'm sorry, i'm sorry...where the hell was Psylocke??? I'm affraid i missed that one.

The problem with a "teen" writer" on this is that x-men is always supposed to be kick-ass and not kiddies playing in a sand box. OC is probably a fine show but it ain't no damn reference as to what a writer could pull out to be concidered a qualified x-men material writer.
talonn2001
talonn2001 - 11/21/2008, 9:44 AM
Teeible idea, what the need to do is a reboot like what was done with Batman. And they need to get a pureist to write and direct. the first 2 x-men were pretty good but the background stories of some charcters pissed me off. the third complete sucked it made me blow chunks. Do a reboot with pureist and don't make them teenagers, make them older maybe late college ages no younger.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/21/2008, 10:20 AM
But a "reboot" implies "origins" and that implies "teenagers". They can't make a reboot because we're all sick as hell of freakin beginnings! It's either they use the end of the third movie to promote their "graduating class" to full fledged team members or fix the deaths of Scott and Charles in some way to somehow "logically" prove that they didn't die but were in limbo or somethin. As for Jean well... Logan killed her and she didn't disentegrate so... tough shit. Have White Queen replace her or somethin.
