Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller have worked together in the past many times including the TV series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Kenneth Branagh's upcoming comic book movie, Thor! Now they've been drafted in to write X-Men: First Class which will focus on the early years of the mutant team. In the following interview (the full version can be viewed by clicking the link at the bottom of the article) they talk more about working on the movie!

How did you guys end up on Fox's radar for First Class?

Zack Stentz: We had one of those great general meetings you have where the executive says "I have to find something for you guys". And you expect to never hear from him again!
Ashley Edward Miller: They knew we worked on Thor, knew we knew the universe, they liked our writing, and thought we could bring something to it that was compatible with Bryan Singer's vision.

Had either of you read Jeff Parker's First Class comic before landing the assignment? Did you lean on it at all, or was the idea of "X-Men: Freshman Year" enough to run with?

Ashley Edward Miller: Nope. all we had to hear was Bryan's take.
Zack Stentz: That sold us immediately. It felt so of a piece with the emotionalism and drama of the first two films.

What were your first meetings with Bryan Singer like?

Ashley Edward Miller: Bryan is a great collaborator. He's very smart, he knows what he wants and he's great with the back-and-forth of designing cool scenes and moments. And when you get into the superheroics, he wants to understand how and why things work.

How difficult was it to settle on the story to tell? There are so many firsts the X-Men had...how do you choose just one?

Ashley Edward Miller: So you ask the same questions you'd ask on any other script: Who are these characters? What do they want? What's in their way?

How accelerated was the process? It all seems like it's moving pretty fast from here on the sidelines...

Ashley Edward Miller: It's a very accelerated process. I don't think that's a secret.
Zack Stentz: They've eliminated the usual screwing around and waiting two to four weeks when you turn in a draft. It's amazing how much fat there is in the feature development process. And how quickly you can make it happen if you cut it out. TV proves that.

What's it been like working with Matthew Vaughn?

Ashley Edward Miller: Honestly, we haven't spoken to him yet.

Are you guys done with your First Class responsibilities?

Ashley Edward Miller: Of course, there's a complete script. but these things are never done until they're shot and edited. All we know is we throw ink where we need to throw ink and we do it until they say stop.

It feels a bit like you're Marvel's go-to writers. Not a bad position to be in.

Ashley Edward Miller: That's an interesting way to look at it. I think there are three Marvel comic book adaptations coming out next summer. And we wrote two of them. That blows my little fanboy mind.

How much are you guys still plugged in to what's happening on Thor?

Zack Stentz: We talk fairly regularly with the guys.
Ashley Edward Miller: I went to the set just last week.

Did you get to...hold it?

Ashley Edward Miller: Dude. Mjolnir is awesome. I got to hold it. I was so stoked. I brutally beat the script supervisor with it.

Thor will be released on May 20, 2011 with X-Men: First Class following shortly after on June 3.

I want to look forward to this movie, and Vaughn has made it easier for me to do that, plus the writers don't give me much apprehension, but damn, it's still Fox :(

Cheers LEE! :)

TYLER: I completely agree - so far, everything (apart from Singer's involvement) I've heard about this movie gets me excited for it but then I remember that Fox are making it and I suddenly feel that familiar sinking feeling I get whenever they announce they're making a new CBM! ;(

there is a couple of things that worry me about First Class: one, the film is due out in 13 months and they haven't even casted the thing. the same can be said about Captain America but they have at least casted a few characters.
the other thing is what Zack Stentz said about cutting the fat out of the filmmaking process. he compared making a film to creating a TV episode. but from my experience, the best Burn Notice episode or Bones episode is like crap compared to a feature film that takes it's time in getting it right.
i just feel that Fox is gonna rush this out. and in doing so, they'll be cutting corners that will ruin what could be the film that gets X-men back on the map as a respectable film franchise.

Some people keep saying how this is happening too fast, but we really don't know exactly how much progress they've achieved.

Singer confirmed way back in December that he was doing the movie. That's five months ago. This article confirms the script is already completed. There are also reports that Singer has been using the Jack The Giant Killer casting to cast First Class.Who knows how long that's been going on?We also have our director.Even though we've only known for about a week, that deal has probably been in the works a little longer.

So, we have our producer, director, script and possibly our actors.Hell, even if they don't already have the actors, they've got nearly two months before filming.Seems to me they're good to go.Captain America seems to be on nearly the same schedule.

What scares me most is that X-Men 1-3 screwed the timeline up so much that it will have to be almost a total re-imagining from the comics. We might as well prepare ourselves now.

@JoshW: If the release dates are correct shouldn't casting be real soon??

The thing about this film that worries me is Singer. He has no desire to do this film right- the story of the original five X-Men. The real shame here is that this movie has a good director in Matthew Vaughn who I would trust, and it could have a good script, but if they're following Singer's twisted "vision", that is less likely. It could have been greatness.

well as long as it has a great story and characters, and the characters dont get messed with then it should be good. they said singer has added what he did in the first two which is emotional, and drama. all i ask for is cyclops, sentinels, sinister, apocalypse, and some new characters like beak please, and chamber, husk, angel salvador, anole glob herman, mammomax, and rockslide. but chamber, husk, beak, and glob herman need to be part of the story involving the sentinels.

i say do this,x-4,and wolverine 2 then give the rights back to marvel so we get the real x-men first class and so forth.

From this article it seems that Bryan Singer has TOO much control & First Class won't be a reboot but a prequel to the screwed up timeline Singer established on X1. I really wanted a reboot. New actors too! Start fresh.

yeaokyea@ i agree about the singer comment and with the reboot. i am a huge x-men fan but i am going to take a stand. if this is not a reboot then i will not watch this film. i have been fooled enough, origins was the last straw. and please please use the characters correctly, lol wait fox and singer are involved, should know better than to hope for that. i guess it's time we take matters into our own hands and try to derail this project so it never gets made and the rights go back to marvel, not sure if they would i have no clue how the deal was made. all i want before i die is a true x-men film. no sissy ass rogue, annoying gambit, softy wolverine, mis-used cyclops. screw it. anyone down to do a fan made x-film, lol.

I liked X-Men Evolution, it was a different take on the universe, but kept true to the characters. man LEEE you hate everything that isn't exactly like the 616 universe I swear, not everything has to be exactly the same, differences are good I don't want to see the exact same thing I read in the comics, that would be boring cause I would already know everything that was going to happen.

With all these reboots happening, why can't they just reboot the X-movies with the original five? I guess they feel like they're gonna confuse the general movie going public, but then again, the typical Hollywood mentality is Joe Film Buff is an idiot and can't wrap his feeble little mind around new concepts.
samh77
samh77 - 5/7/2010, 8:46 PM
is this going to be a total reboot of the series??? Fox has done nothing but bastardize all these great Marvel characters. I just don't see this movie being any good at all as long as Fox is in charge. Why cant they just let Marvel handle the creative aspects of these properties and just play the role of the studio??? I mean how hard is that. As far as Im concerned this movie has disaster written all over it. Marvel please get X-Men back, re-boot it and call it, 'The Uncanny X-Men'.

MONTEZ - 5/8/2010, 9:42 AM
x-men evolution was very good. as osi said, it was a different take but stayed true to the characters essence.
