X-Men First Class has Issues... Think about it

Some timeline and character problems. Explanations please!

First things first, this movie has some issues. It is set during the Cuban Missile Crisis. That would be around 1962. Wolverine Origins was set during the Three Mile Island accident so that’s around 1979. The beginning of X-Men 3 shows professor X and Magneto visited the Grey household estimating the date to be around 1986. With that established, Havok and Cyclops being brothers is going to be hard to pull off. A 17 year age difference is very improbable, but not impossible. Remember, there is a third brother floating around somewhere.

No one seems to think about the age difference between Cyke and Jean Grey. If he was at least 15 in Origins and she was 13 or 14 in X3, Cyke would have been in his early 20’s by then.

Azazel is Nightcrawler’s father, okay that works. Mystique can hide her age easily enough with her powers and Hank Mccoy is older than the rest as seen in X3. Hank obviously had an image inducer that hid his furry alter ego on the television.

Banshee and Moira fits this time period, I think. Banshee should have been Irish, his history is important to the character, being a cop for Scotland Yard shows his experience.

Emma Frost must have been in her late 30’s to be the same Emma in Origins. UNLESS, she can mask her image like Mastermind.

A lot with b!tch about it, a lot will praise it, but we’ll all see it.
That’s the best I can come up with, What do you guys think?

Origins was really set in 1979? I thought it was much closer than that honestly. Ugh my head hurts much like how Charles looks in the pic. I mean, I'll watch the movie, hoping its good, but there's a part of me that still feels dirty ... lol

There is only an eight year difference between Scott and Jean if your info is accurate. I know married couples with that kind of age difference. Theres nothing wrong with that. As for Emma. The Emma in First Class could be the mother of the Emma in Origins.

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY: What was a good trailer, then. X-men: First Class easily had the best trailer out of the superhero movies this year (although Captain America has only had a thirty second tv spot). Green Lantern looked like they tried making it a cheesy romatic comedy, but did look promising in the other parts of the trailer. Thor looked even worse with overloaded action, and we all know how to much action has been a downfall for CBMs. First Class, on the other hand, looked like it actually had a story, and a good story at that.

They are obviously RE-Booting the franchise. It works for me. This movie will become the basis for the new movies. DISREGARD every thing else. And before you fan-tards flame on. Think about everything in X-men comics or movies that makes sense in continuity. Exactly. Shut up and either see it or not. that simple.

well...i know he is sorta cat-like but he also has a ape style to him but what i seen looks really more like a big freakin cat...he even has a cat nose, mouth, feet, probably hands, cat eyes. no ape-like style to him.
i hope they have more to him then just a cat.

Here's my issues: With First Class being in the Singer continuity we'll get like 3 more X films (more prequels or an X4) and likely never see the original characters again because of what came before (except maybe Iceman or Angel, but both were screwed up in prior films and have to be recast anyway!).

That's the frustration with this I think. First Class could be an okay film, even better than X2, but there's nothing to look forward to since they can't use the best characters. We've got like 4 decades in between the film cannon now so unless they do a "Next Class" film set like 25 years after to can include a younger Cyclops, Jean, Storm, etc there's no hope. And if they do that they'll need to recast Prof. X and Magneto again due to age and we'll still be screwed out of a proper Angel (WW).

Who wants an X4? Cyclops is dead, Storm likely won't be back, Iceman was a pussy and Angel just kind of exists with no purpose. Several of the X3 characters would likely be recast and at best we might get a better Colossus out of it! Maybe we'll get a payoff for the the Prof. X and Magneto cliffhangers, but who wants an 80 year old Magneto? Wolverine used to be cool, but since the first 3 films were centered around him and now we have Origins and another film to come it'd be too much of him! I'm just not thrilled with the direction this keeps going.

Thanx for the reply and I hope to have some solid discourse here because I find your statement interesting.

I am a supporter of action in comicbook superhero movies and the criticisms I have had usually are the action was too short, e.g., the final battle in IM2 with Whiplash Dynamo, or most action scenes in Electra. I have never seen one of these movies in which I think the action was too much.

I'm not sure what you mean by the term downfall. Are you talking about financial or regard as a good movie. X3 and XOW were both financially very successful. I think their critical failure is due to other reasons with respect to plot/story, e.g., X3 tried to mash together the plots for 2 storylines creating a mess that left both underdeveloped and poorly down.

My friends and I found PW to be a good movie with a good amount of action. I think the movie failed financially because the public simply didn't care about the Punisher. Jonah Hex from what I hear was just plain BAD! I mean people say virtually everything, except Brolin's acting, was TERRIBLE so I can't really say that too much action was the cause of that movies failure.

XOW is probably the only movie where there might have been too much action but again that movie only failed with comicbook fans. It didn't fail financially and from other people who I have spoken to, the general audience liked it.

So I cant agree with your statement. i think far often CBM's suffer from too little action.

Also I think that from all that I know of Thor action is not overemphasized. The trailer shows some significant action to lure in the audience and I can tell you that it is working! Every person who I have shown Thor too really likes it and is eager to see it. I think action is a far better selling point in a CBM than lame comedy. Plus everyone who has read the Thor script says the story is very well done.

That said I agree with you the XMFC trailer looks classy and foreshadows a good story. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I am a huge X-men fan and my favourite character in comics by far is Magneto!

@coldblood6: I'm going by regard as a good movie when I say "downfall".
Anyway, X3 tried to be epic by combining a bunch of great plots together and coating the movie with action and explosions. They basically tried to make it as intense as possible. If they toned down the action they could of spent more time to develop one of their 3 big plots (the brotherhood story, the mutant cure, and the phoenix saga). In my opinion they actually had the plots tied together somewhat good, or good enough to be expanded upon. The action didn't allow them to build on what they had therefor the movie came out the way it did.
Origins is despised by non-fans, too. Let's just put it this way most people who like origins are either very young or liked the action scenes. Warzone is one of those iffy movies for fans. I think that most fanboys would say that Warzone over did the action.
As for Thor the supposibly leaked script (that I didn't read) got me excited, but then I heard that the creature at the end of the Thor tv spot wasn't in the script.
And finally, I think that the "lame comedy" is a better selling point because that is what the general audience is used to when it comes to superhero films (remember the Spider-man or Ironman movies). Thor on the other hand looks like one of those lame action flicks that is worth one watch.

MESSAGE TO ALL OF YA : I would certainly agree that films like "Batman & Robin" "Resident Evil 2" "Highlander 2" "Terminator 3" are complete turkeys. I would also say that films such as "Pirates : At World's End", Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions or Transformers ROTF were poorly written, filled with lousy dialogues and plot holes the size of Alaska. Heck man I could even agree with the genral hatred towards the lateste efforts from directors like McG., M.Night Shyamalan or Brat Retner... But I DO NOT GET WHY PEOPLE WERE EVEN SLIGHTELY DISAPOINTED BY THE LAST STAND !!!

And it's not just about me, but it's one of the first blurays my best friends and I bought, and we're not influenced by eachother's tastes... I'm talking 6 different guys with different backgrounds, pop culture references and standards. WE ALL LOVE IT AS THE PERFECT FINAL ACT OF A AMAZING TRILOGY. Dude, try to watch Origins first and then watch the trilogy, you'll see that the "ALKALI LAKE" story ark runs throughout in a consistent way, talking of continuity, it doesn't get better than that. In the course of 4 films, you get introduced to 30 different kinds of mutants, with different backgrounds, motives and powers.

I don't know what is not to like in the XMEN franchise. Richard Donner's wife Lauren Shuler is a clever woman, she knows where she's going here. For once, when you watch THE LAST STAND, you realize that this has been thought through, there is a master plan behind the work of Zac Penn and others. Kevin Feige producing it should be an indication that some real comic book guru geeks were in charge here. and what do you get?
A good story about the difference between gifts and curses, between power and compassion. and as far as action sequences go, this film is better than the other two, no offense. You get a DANGER ROOM opening sequence that kicks ass, with sentinels, Colossus rocking the boat, shadowcat and Iceman doing what they do best. You get a freaky scary performance by Flamke Janssen. You get an amazing scene in Jean Grey's house of pure mayhem. Gosh you even get the coolest moves from Mystique. If that is not enough, you get the badass fight between Wolverine and the bones growing dude in the forrest.
Finally there's the Alcatraz sequence at the end that no one got. People wonder why Magneto had to transport the Golden Bridge like that. Well... see, Magneto isn't just a mere human, he is a God amongst insects. He doesn't see things like you and I. When he looks at a bridge with heavy traffic and stopped cars, what he sees is a GIANT WEAPON of MASS DESTRUCTION. thebridge's the gun, and Pyro plus the cars equal bullets. He's a genius !

Well, even the gran finale between Logan and Jean where he delivers the "I Love You" line could be cheesy but it isn't, it simply works.

BOTTOM LINE : please do something for me watch ORIGINS, X1, UNITED & THE LAST STAND back to back, forget about the stupid haters who simply go with the general opinion, and you will realize that unlike other Marvel films, this one hasn't age at all and that the continuity there is just amazing.

PS : and as far as first class is concerned, take it as the orignal X team, as apposed to the trilogy which is like the "Next Generation". You know you'll witness Scott Summers's fathers first steps as Havok, Nightcrawler's father Azazel, or Emma's (origins) mother as the "White Queen", you'll see young Beast and Mystique, what is there not to like here...? all that in a Cold war / bay of Pigs, historical setting... dudes, I don't get you sometimes...

With all due respect dude you are very, very, wrong about their success in tying together plots for X3. As an X-men fan who has read the greatness of the Dark Pheonix saga I can tell you that was watered down crap.

I think I can agree with you to some extent in that the action in X3 was too much given the time spent developing the plot. I look at it from a different angle. The action was adequate and quite good but the story aspects needed to be stretched out. X3 was never supposed to be an 80 minute movie.

Sorry I have disagree with you when you make the statement that XOW was despised by nonfans. I recently asked a class of over 30 university students and the opinion of the movie was overwhelmingly positive with only 1 person saying it was crap. The current IMDB user rating for XOW is 6.7 - that's OK, not crap. I'm not defending the movie but I really don't think it's faults are too much action.

I have a feeling you saying that 'most fanboys' would say that PW had too much action is a statement without any real facts behind it. Like I said the group I went to see it with all liked it.

I really can't agree with you statement that IM and Spiderman emphasize lame comedy. Those movies have comedic elements that:
(a) are actually funny
(b) don't overwhelm the movie (except maybe SM3)

If Thor looks to you like a lame action movie that's only worth one watch then I cannot tell you you're wrong. That's how it looks to you. I have to say that I am excited to see the action sequences, dramatic scenes, and the characterisation of Thor. And I think all those aspects have been adequately displayed in the trailers to give an idea of a complete movie. In fact a female coworker I recently showed it too really liked because of the dramatic story elements.

Just out of curiosity if you are so against action, why be interested in CBmovies. Would not A&E or Lifetime network stuff be more your taste?

Dude I am happy for you that you liked X3 but I will emphasize one MAJOR point why I dislike that movie.

The Dark Pheonix saga is supposed to focused on the love between Scott and Jean. The strength of their love has been established in the previous films with Wolvie being little more than a tempting distraction for her. Making the love aspect be between Wolvie and Jean is a true abomination to fans and out of synce with the previous movies. there are many other flaws.

That said as much as I dislike the movie there are a few cool things in it like Juggernaut and a fully iced up Iceman. But to most fans of both the comics and previous films the bad things far outweigh the good.

But again I'm happy for you that you liked it.

@coldblood6: First off, X3 may have horriibly adapted the Dark Phoenix saga, but from what they did have of it, it was tied together somewhat good. Adaption has nothing to do with whether they did a good job tying a plot with another. Also what do you mean by "X3 was never supposed to be an 80 minute movie."? Is that an exagerration for 100 minutes as in you think 100 minute movies are too short. or did you actually think X3 was 80 minutes long. Personally, I think 100 minutes is a really good length for a movie.
As for X-men origins: Wolverine I'm basing it's non-fan success from people I have talked to. Everybody has different opinions, and I guess the people you talked to happened to like it better than the people I talked to. Rotten Tomatoes gave XMOW 37%, and too much action played a significant role in it's demise. It had other flaws, but I think overloading the action was too major to ignore.
Punisher: Warzone- once again different people different opinions.
Yes I am a GL fan, but I honestly think the comedy looks just as lame as the Ironman or Spider-man movies do. I actuall made that comment because i had a conversation with some non-comicbook readers who think GL is going to be as good as the Spider-man and Ironman movies because of the comedy in the trailer being like those movies (which they liked).
As for your final question, I do beleive a movie can have to lttle action (such as The Hulk). I don't hate action I just don't think it needs to be the main focus of a movie, and overshadow what could be a good story. I like comic book movies because I like comic books.

A Friend Of Mine Is A Big Punisher Fan...and he said that Punisher: War Zone was a pretty good movie...and i think it is good...it is violent(which he mentioned he thought it made it even more good....but The Punisher is actually violent in the comics.
and GL will have some comedy...and i do think it is like the iron man and spider man comedy...plus GL will be like 2 hours long...maybe a little bit shorter but there won't be just comedy...it will definatly have serious moments...and a good deal of action but not enough to overdue it...cause they have put alot of money on that movie.

You know its so easy to identify GL fanboys, it's like they have a big glowing green construct floating over them saying FANBOY!

They seem to have taken the negativity to the GL trailer personally and are countering the positivity generated to the Thor trailers with fabricated negativity.

You can just spot them right off the bat. Sad. LOL.

For you guys I'm really hoping GL is a great movie too.

Have you senn the trailers for the Eagle? The Eagle looked the same way. It's not uncommon to have that problem, and I think Thor is going to be a victim of that problem.
