Xenix Lists: Top 5 Cool Things in X-Men: First Class!

I give my view on the good aspects of this film.

This is mostly to disprove all the people who said I was a narrow minded fanboy...which I am not, by a long shot.

Number 5:
No Wolverine

Although Hugh Jackman is a talented actor, and undeniably manages to pull off Wolverine's hairstyle surprisingly well, Fox seemed, in the past four films, to only really focus on him, pushing aside the team's actual leader, Cyclops, even going as far as killing him at the very beginning of the third film. Granted, Origins was supposed to be focused on Wolverine, being his spin off, but it didn't do that well. You know something's wrong when the tie-in game captures the essence of the character better than the film it's based on.

Although since technically Wolverine is indeed alive at the time of First Class, at the very most he'll have a small cameo in the film, but nothing important.

Number 4:
Beast's Origin

Putting aside Beast's impact on the film continuity, I applaud the creators for their portrayal of Beast. People mock him as looking like a cat, but...he's looked like a cat for years.

I especially like the fact that they remembered that Beast was a mutant before turning into the big blue Beast. He already had mutant powers, but one of his experiments with the mutant gene caused him to mutate even more. You can see him holding a syringe in the trailer, no doubt holding the chemical that transforms him further.

Number 3:
The Setting.

It was a really, really, really smart move by Fox to have this film take place in the 1960's, during the Civil Rights movement, not to mention around the time
the comic itself first appeared.

The outfits don't look out of place to be from the 60's. I expect to see a very strong comparison between Xavier and Magneto with Martin Luther King and Malcom X in the film, with a lot of tension between the two. Which brings us to my next section:

Number 2:
Charles And Erik's Character Development

Surprisingly, Fox actually seems to have seen the rich, emotional story that Xavier and Erik have, and taken the opportunity to use it. From the recent interviews, reports, and general look of the film, it seems that it will focus on the following things:

1: Xavier learning how to be a teacher and leader.
2: Xavier being humbled from being a "sex beast" (likely due to losing his hair and becoming disabled).
3: Erik's journey to becoming Magneto.
4: The death of Charles and Erik's friendship.

All of these elements seem to indicate a great deal of emotion and drama, and it seems that Fassbender and McAvoy seem to have taken their characters to heart.

Number 1:
The Costumes

I really, really like the fact that Fox finally decided to try their hardest to adapt the costumes as close to the comics as they could. That's not to say they're the perfect adaptations, I'm saying that Fox seems to be trying as hard as they can to make it so.

I also love the way they worked in the Yellow and Blue uniforms: Diving/Parachute outfits. It makes sense, since they are in a jet, and they manage to pull off the look very well. Although I'd prefer maybe an X logo on it, it does the job it's supposed to do.

And it's not just the yellow and blue outfits. Emma's costume is as revealing as ever, and Magneto's helmet looks stunningly like the one from the comics.

Wolverine is the character that actually interested me in seeing any of the X-Men movies. Hugh Jackman is incredibly perfect in the role. And I heard they won't have Cyclops or Jean Grey in the movie, so that kinda killed my interest in the movie until the trailer came out.
I agree with the rest of your points, though.

I agree on all counts but they do not out weigh the bad stuff.

With First Class being in the Singer continuity we'll get more X films (more prequels or an X4) and likely never see the original characters again because of what came before (except maybe Iceman or Angel, but both were screwed up in prior films and have to be recast anyway!).

First Class could be an okay film, even better than X2, but there's nothing to look forward to since they can't use the best characters. We've got like 4 decades in between the film cannon now so unless they do a "Next Class" film set like 25 years after to can include a younger Cyclops, Jean, Storm, etc there's no hope. And if they do that they'll need to recast Prof. X and Magneto again due to age and we'll still be screwed out of a proper Angel becuase of the timeline with X3.

Who wants an X4? Cyclops is dead, Storm likely won't be back, Iceman was a pussy and Angel just kind of exists with no purpose. Several of the X3 characters would likely be recast and at best we might get a better Colossus out of it! Maybe we'll get a payoff for the the Prof. X and Magneto cliffhangers, but who wants an 80 year old Magneto? Wolverine used to be cool, but since the first 3 films were centered around him and now we have Origins and another film to come it'd be too much of him! I'm just not thrilled with the direction this keeps going.

nice topic. So many are focusing on petty little continuity errors.

OMG a Fictional movie isn't close enough to a fictional comic!

Marvel's been killing characters, bringing them back to life, and rebooting character stories for decades. Why cry now?

x2 writernick, I think its cool we'll see characters I personally don't know a lot about like Azazel, Angel Salvadore, and the Hellfire Club.

finally something different.
i was starting to think that everyone was bigoted against the X-films. don't get me wrong, they are almost the worst adapations of any source material. but being a good adaptation and good film is what made these films intriguing to say the least. X2 i had always marked as one of the best CBMs pre-2008. First Class may be a return to form and that is what i sincerley hope.

Agree with the fact of no Wolverine, for years that has been the go to Mutant for these movies. Hell the first one made it seem all about him until the last 20 minutes, then for 2 more outings it's all about him again. I'm glad they chose different mutants, sick of seeing the same ones (one) plus I'm over Jackman as Wolverine, really is no one ever irritated that he isn't anything like the comics? A little too tall and not nearly menacing enough.

Continuity errors aside, it looks like a pretty good movie.

@bartman87 & Wadey09 I agree it's nice to have something different. I really do like the Cold War aspects! This also appears to have a better cast and best the director yet for the series. Totally excited that there's no Wolverine. I know for now this film is a prequel, but if they continue to move on with this series thay can kind of reboot it as well should they choose to include classic characters.

For now First Class in in the continuity, but they can make a "Second Class" or "Next Class" film and add Angel, Cyclops, Ice Man or Marvel Girl and then branch of into a different world. This way First Class can be in 2 different movie universes. Maybe this is what Fox & the producers are thinking. They don't necessarily have to reboot it at this point. I remember with Batman Begins that they never totally said it was a reboot, they just stated that it was about how Batman got started, but clearly there were continuity issues with the Burton films and then they totally went in their own direction with TDK.
