The George Miller directed continuation of Max Rockastansky's dystopian chronicles continues to have strong legs at the box office. But just how much will Mad Max: Fury Road need to earn for a sequel?

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Still Going Strong

Currently, Mad Max: Fury Road has earned $125.1 million at the domestic box office, placing it at 9th on the current 2015 domestic box office list.  Fury Road is sure to climb higher though before ending its run.  George Miller has already announced that the script for a sequel has already been written in addition to a treatment for a third installment.    With an estimated  production budget of $150 million and current box office gross of $307.8 million , just how high will Mad Max need to climb in order for WB to officially announce a sequel?  The film is opening in Japan on June 20th and is still slated to open in China (though it doesn't have an official release date) so there's still million more to add to the final box office tally.

My favorite movie of all time is The Shawshank Redemption...

The Shawshank Redemption received a limited release on September 23, 1994 in North America. During its opening weekend, the film earned $727,000 from 33 theaters—an average of $22,040 per theater. It received a wide release on October 14, 1994, expanding to a total of 944 theaters to earn $2.4 million—an average of $2,545 per theater—finishing as the number 9 film of the weekend.[1] The film left theaters in late November 1994, after 10 weeks with an approximate total gross of $16 million.[15]

It was later re-released in February 1995, during the Oscar season, and made an additional $9 million.[15][not in citation given] In total the film made approximately $28.3 million in North American theaters, making it the number 51 highest grossing film of 1994 and the number 21 highest grossing R-rated film of 1994.[1]

Mad Max: Fury Road proved that there is an appetite for mature(R-rated) action flicks. That is good news beyond the Mad Max franchise. If King Conan was ever going to get made it needed a film like Mad Max: FR to pave the way and show the studio execs that it could be profitable. I hope King Conan gets made and I look forward to a Mad Max sequel, hopefully featuring Mad Max a bit more.

This movie is an action film masterpiece.
You 100% cannot claim to be a fan of action films & not like this.
Support it & go see it soon..I've seen it twice at the theater,will buy DVD.

Oh yea..DREDD was a fantastic movie. It's a crime that it wasn't better advertised.
Anyone who doesn't like that movie should be judged a fool & be sentenced to hard time.

@LEOSTRATOR I really do appreciate your opinion but I beg you to give this movie another watch. Miller created a freaking masterpiece here. It's full of symbolic themes and great characters and just amazing visuals. Seriously have you ever seen a movie like this one? Not even the other 3 Mad Max movies look like this. You have to also understand that this was a movie almost completely done without CGI or green screens. They were actually in the desert of Africa blowing up cars. All the cars were real. It's so tactical and brilliant. I'll give you that the actual plot was a bit straight forward, but there's so much sub text in what is being shown. Miller build a whole world in this movie. The language, the religion, the different towns and families. Avengers AOU looked like a video game next to it.

@aboynamedblue Did it prove that? It's only done 130 million in the US and won't break 160 million in the US. Even in Australia it is being outperformed by mindless kid stuff like Age Of Ultron and Pitch Perfect 2.

Fury Road is a great, smart movie like those in the 75-82 era like Jaws, Raiders, Blade Runner.

But the majority of people can't enjoy smart movies. So they flock to utter garbage like Transformers, Iron Man 3 and Age Of Ultron.

WB totally botched it's release schedule. It hasn't opened yet in many countries and by the time it does there will be some great copies of it online, losing it some money.

And WB was fvcktard, batshit crazy to put San Andreas out one week after Fury Road. Especially with no strong movies out on July 4th.

@LEOSTRATOR It is a part of the post apocalyptic genre done by the genre's creator himself.

This is like getting another Spaghetti Western such as a sequel to The Good The Bad And The Ugly from Sergio Leone who is somehow still a better director decades later and who actually beats his own classic. This is something we have never seen happen before. Even Spielberg doesn't top his old movies with better sequels as we saw with Crystal Skull which was cast and directed poorly.

Fury Road is the most completely great genre movie I've seen since Raiders Of The Lost Ark. It's only competition is The Dark Knight but w/out Ledger it wouldn't have been so good. And everyone hated Bale's voice.

Everything in Fury Road was perfect. It was a masterpiece.

I like seeing some more R-rated big budget movies, but don't these totals just reinforce the fact that if you really want that big Transformers/Avengers/Dark Knight money you have to stick to PG-13? I mean isn't San Andreas far outpacing Fury Road? I mean both can survive and have their markets but it hardly seems like some huge success for R-rated movies that going to influence the future of movies.

there will be a sequel i am sure. the movie is not even done yet. i can see it clearing 450 million at least.

i am waiting for the bluray but i hear its awesome and there is maybe 20 minutes in the movie where there is no chasing and action.

I'll definitely have to watch it again if your comparing this to the first 3, Thunder Dome is my favorite. I can respect the practical effects but having no CGI don't make a movie better. There was some good action in a strait forward movie, just not mind blowing for me.
I started coming to this site due to the fact that I don't have any friends or family that are into CBMs, SiFi and action flix. I come to this site for movie reviews and members reactions to the films. Unfortunately, some of the guys are just being bias. It makes it hard to gauge what movies to watch at the theaters and which ones to hold off on.
As a married man I have to choose wisely, since my wife and I take turns on picking what movie we're watching. I picked Mad Max over Ultron.
