George Miller On Whether There's More Of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD's Furiosa To Come

Director George Miller discusses Mad Max: Fury Road breakout character, Imperator Furiosa and whether there's any chance we'll ever see more of the supporting character in future Max Rockatansky adventures

Stopping by Entertainment Weekly's Sirius satellite radio program, director George Miller touched on the popularity of Charlize Theron's Furiosa and whether he'll revisit the character in future Mad Max films.  Said Miller, " Yes, I have [zeroed in on the storyline for the sequel].  And certainly [I'm] having conversations about it [with the studio]. But I’m not sure if it’s the very next movie I want to do. I’ve got something a bit smaller before we go back out into the wasteland — something that’s contemporary that we can get through fairly quickly. And something with not too much technical difficulty. Something more performance-based and so on, just to clear the exhaust."

So it appears there will be a bit of a wait for the next Mad Max film as Miller is looking to direct a smaller feature in his next movie.  As far as Furiosa is concerned, Miller added, "Yeah, she’s a pretty compelling character so it would be great to tell her story.   Her backstory is really interesting.  We only allude to it in this movie because this movie is on the run; people don’t have much time for recreational talk. But you pick up, you have a sense of her having gone through stuff. That’s what the film is trying to do. You’re trying to put a lot of iceberg under the tip, I like saying.One of the things that’s really gratifying, people are reading the film more than just the surface — the events of the movie, and just picking up a lot of stuff underneath it, which is very deliberate......So in many ways, the audience is picking up a lot about Furiosa — or enough to intrigue. And she’s got an interesting story."

Previously, Miller stated that he was developing two ideas for a Mad Max: Fury Road sequel but would only commit to doing one of them.  It sounds as if he's zeroed in on the idea he wants to explore in the sequel but Furiosa fans shouldn't expect her to appear.  Miller previously stated that Furiosa didn't appear in either of his two ideas for the sequel but that she does have an "interaction" with Max. So perhaps we only hear Furiosa's voice in the sequel but she doesn't actually appear?  Nevertheless, Miller's comments would seem to indicate that he's extremely interested in the character so perhaps there will be a Furiosa spin-off that tells her origin story.

Finally.saw this movie on New Years Eve. It was good. Story itself was boring, but not really required for the spectacle of the movie. The action was great, Hardy was intense as Max. Theron and Holt stole the film, though. They were both great.

I give the movie a solid 7.5/10. I'd likely get to a theatre for the sequel.

In my defense, McGee's hands are velvety smooth. Like sticking your junk in a cloud.

No no no no no no. Stop with the spin off or prequel shit. She's a good character but not interesting enough to need a backstory. How about we move forward without all this origin bullshit?

If "more performance based" means some exploration of Max, then I'm all in. I loooooved Furiosa, but I want more focus on Max with this sequel.

@ComicsBornAndBred

That comment about performance based is in reference to his "smaller project" thst he wants to do before a Mad Max sequel.

What I wanna know is, whats the structure of the next movie going to be? It can't just be another chase movie, they pretty much covered everything you could ever want to see in a wasteland car chase movie already.

Of the original trilogy only the 2nd one had that structure and it was easily the best one so hopefully they have a good idea for this sequel.

@Rulk

Agree. Mad Max was friggin awesome. Way better than Jurassic World and to be fair it's not that hard to be better than Age of Ultron. Bring on MM5!

@slickrickdesigns

Maybe they should throw Adam Sander and his buddies in the next one so that you can get optimum enjoyment out of it!
