To mark the review aggregator's 25th anniversary, Rotten Tomatoes recently sent out over 10,000 ballots to its certified critics, asking them to pick their five favourite films of the past quarter-century.

The results are now in, and critics voted George Miller's post-apocalyptic masterpiece, Mad Max: Fury Road, as the best movie of the past 25 years.

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite came in second; David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive third; Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight fourth, and Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire rounded out the top five.

Fury Road taking the top spot really isn't too surprising, since it's still widely viewed as one of the greatest action movies of all time (it holds a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes). Miller has previously shown interested in helming a sequel, but whether he'll be able to get Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron back on the same set remains to be seen!

A prequel focusing on a younger version of Theron's character, Furiosa, is on the way, with Anya Taylor-Joy taking over as the formidable wasteland warrior.

Check out the top 25 in full below.

01. Mad Max: Fury Road (George Miller)

02. Parasite (Bong Joon-ho)

03. Mulholland Dr. (David Lynch)

04. The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan)

05. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Céline Sciamma)

07. Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki)

08. Pan’s Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro)

09. The Matrix (The Wachowskis)

10. The Social Network (David Fincher)

11. No Country for Old Men (Joel & Ethan Coen)

12. There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson)

13. Get Out (Jordan Peele)

14. Moonlight (Barry Jenkins)

15. Everything Everywhere All Once (The Daniels)

16. Magnolia (Paul Thomas Anderson)

17. Whiplash (Damien Chazelle)

18. Inside Llewyn Davis (Joel & Ethan Coen)

19. The Fellowship of the Ring (Peter Jackson)

20. Zodiac (David Fincher)

21. Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino)

22. The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick)

23. Paddington 2 (Paul King)

24. Black Panther (Ryan Coogler)

25. Arrival (Denis Villeneuve)

Not a bad list, all things considered, and there are a few undeniably excellent films on there. Of course, any type of "best of" poll like this is always going to draw sneers, and more than a few members of the online film community have taken issue with a lot of the winners.

What do you think? Do you agree that Fury Road is the best movie of the past 25 years? Be sure to give us your own top 5 in the comments.

It's totally one of my favorite movies from the past 25 years. The visuals alone blow away 99% of dull colorless modern movies.

Off topic: Emma Stone from The Amazing Spiderman commits to doing nude scenes in her next movie and I support her in this endeavor!

Paddington 2....

Paddington 2 is way too low and I'm kinda missing Return of the King on this list. Fellowship is great, but I always prefered the third Lord of the Rings movie.

Anyway, did not expect Fury Road to be the best. It's visuals, music, style and allround atmosphere is great, but it's just so lacking in story and character imo.
