PINOCCHIO: Meet Sebastian J. Cricket In The First Teaser For Guillermo Del Toro's Animated Adaptation

If it feels like years since we first heard about Guillermo del Toro's planned Pinocchio adaptation, it's because it has been! It may seem hard to believe, but the Nightmare Alley director has been trying to realize his vision for a stop-motion animated musical take on the classic fairy tale for close to a decade, and we finally have a first look courtesy of a brief trailer.

The teaser introduces a new take on Jiminy Cricket named Sebastian J. Cricket, who'll be voiced by Ewan McGregor. Sebastian tells us that he wants to tell us a story, and it's "a story you may think you know, but you don't... not really."

Disney's previous adaptation was considerably lighter in tone than Carlo Collodi’s novel (in which the titular wooden boy actually kills the talking cricket... just to give you some idea of how dark things get), so it'll be interesting to see how much Del Toro draws from the source material.

The official synopsis reads: "Pinocchio follows the extraordinary journey of a wooden boy magically brought to life by a father’s wish. Set during the rise of Fascism in Mussolini’s Italy, del Toro's Pinocchio is a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father’s expectations."

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio also features the voice talents of Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, David Bradley and Gregory Mann. The movie is set to hit Netflix this December.

Whatever happened to that Geppetto movie with RDJ as both Geppetto and Pinocchio?

Anyway, I kinda look forward to this. I do want a Fables live-action adaptation too, but I think this will suffice as an alternate take on famous fairy tales too

@bkmeijer - I thought Tom Hanks had a Pinocchio movie coming out where he played Geppetto?

Only animation style I really enjoy, and I love the story. Del Toro? And this cast? Sold sold sold.

I take it the cricket won’t actually die in the movie since he just said to us in the trailer that he’s recounting a story in his life.

I like Ron Pearlman shows up in all of Del Toro’s works.

It would be perfect if Guillermo del Toro continued Burton's Batman. Maybe for one last movie. I think his vision would be similar to Burton's. Also, he could create a great Kirk Langstrom/Man-Bat played by Doug Jones.

@Repian - A final movie in the Burton Bat trilogy would be awesome even if Burton didn't direct it himself.
If GDT made it, he could absolutely create a great Man-Bat. I would however prefer if he made Clayface. He could be made with a mix of stop motion and cgi and Ron Perlman could even provide his voice again like he did in BTAS

@ChrisRed - @Repian GDT likes Etrigan so that could also be an option. Think he was supposed to be a part of his JLD

I can't help but see Geppetto as the embodiment of evil since reading Fables.

@blackandyellow - Same. Really want a show based on that story. Don't necessarily want Mister Dark yet, but the Adversary is so cool
