Concept Designer Offers Up Some Info On The Live Action Akira Movie

Well, the live action movie that WAS in production under Albert Hughes. But some of the designs may be kept, and Chris Weston reckons Akira fans would not be happy if they were!..

For the past year, Weston worked as a production artist on Albert Hughes’ planned live-action version of Akira. Now although Hughes is off the project, WB are confident that a new director will be found and the movie will go forward..whether we like it or not! Cinemablend have come across some details that Weston posted on his blog, detailing his redesigned concepts for Kaneda's iconic motorcycle..

on my first day on the job I was asked to “redesign the bike”! Yes, that’s right: THE bike. I was as horrified as you are; probably more, ‘cos I was the one the fanboys were going to come for when they inevitably declared it a travesty.

In my defence, I would say at least I brought a love of Katsuhoro Otomo’s art and an admiration of his design aesthetic to the table. I didn’t want to stray too far away from the classic design. However, one has to admit that faithful real-life reproductions of Kaneda’s bike do look a little bit “kitsch” … So the version I created was a bit meatier and nastier: the tyres were bigger, the engine was bigger, some of the casing was stripped off to expose the workings beneath. Kaneda was in a motorcycle gang that used these vehicles as weapons, so we gave it a more beaten-up look, dirtier, a few dents and scratches here and there.

In silhouette you’d have no problem recognising it as the Akira Bike, but the lighting would reveal a whole new level of texture and detail… There was a short discussion about making it black, but I did my bit to keep it red, albeit a darker, bergundy hue. I believe BMW in Munich had begun production of a working model, but I can’t vouch for that. I produced tons of other character designs, storyboards and concept designs for Akira, and hopefully they’ll eventually see the light of day.

All things considered, the bike redesign — something that would be almost a given — doesn’t sound bad at all, especially with the idea of retaining the basic silhouette, but revealing other details when seeing it close. (Then again, it could also end up looking like some of the rickety comic to screen designs from, say, Judge Dredd.)

Weston also says that he believes that the casting rumors floating around(ranging from Zac Effron to Keanu Reeves etc) are "bollocks". I really hope that Warners get their heads out of their asses when it comes to this movie. I would not be against an Americanized version of Akira IF the essence of the original story and characters were kept in tact. But everything we have heard so far suggests that a live action version would be Akira in name only.

just leave it alone Hollywood go and adapt another manga which doesn't need the whole [frick]ing story changed and is more "westernised" as in easier to adapt. But then again they [frick]ed up Priest big time so I doubt manga/anime that are "westernised" are going to fair any better, looks like we'll have to go through the same process CBM's went before we get a good one.

To me the problem is that they probably will never have BALLS to put a scene like that one of tetsuo having his guts falling out of his body.

It's gonna be shiny and allmighty, but in a scott pilgrim fashion (which I really hated).

Akira should never be translated to live-action. Even with top of the line, state of the art special fx. "Kaneda", "Akira", and "Tetsuo" are Japanses names and should be portrayed by Japanese actors but almost certainly guaranteed not to be.

At any rate, don't expect much from this debacle (can you say Dragon Ball: Evolution).

Redisign the bike...pssht...

How bout not and pleasing the audience for a change?

@aklash. Holy **** yes. That was such a WHAM scene. Even though it was shown to be a vision seconds later I was just open-mouthed at it. (Though I try and avoid watching Akira when eating now :P)

I hope that they don't make this or a cowboy bebop for that matter. But, if they do, you know that they are going to have to change some designs to fit what this era of media deems to be futuristic. If it bothers you that much, don't read the articles or watch the movie.

This reminds me of DB Evolution, The Piccolo actor pushed them to keep certain things true to the story, like the appearance of his character. But in the end, it was still a pile of crap because the entire thing was not faithful to the source. When will Hollywood finally get the hint?

this will be an embarrassment.

since its in Neo-Manhattan, i thought they were changing to Kaneda and Tetsuo's names to Kenneth and Trevor, or something equally as ridiculous.

am i remembering early reports correctly?

either way, this move will be an abomination to the godfather of all anime...

I dont mind a remake of the bike. It's kind of like a badass scooter anyway.

@MovieTheaterLad Then why not just make entirely different movie about a country rebulding itself in the wake of a national disaster, why call it Akira(which is a japanese name by the way).

This is what I'm ALWAYS "preaching" about...Hollywood tends to believe IT knows better than the fans...who made it popular in the first place! These damn Hollywood execs and even certain directors with their "visions" just [frick]ing don't get it. If a comic, cartoon, a toyline, a book or videogame is popular enough to warrant a live-action adaptation...I cannot fathom why anyone would think to change key elements of the plot, character designs/goals...in order to make it "better"! And to take something that's already designed to be way more violent than the PG-13 crowd and soften it up for better sales is ridiculous. If it was that popular to begin with, it will still bring the crowds.

Nice ass DukeAcureds!
