More Akira Details

Director Albert Hughes(of the Hughes Bros) confirms that he and his bro will be helming the picture and revealed some more details during an interview on a BDK Reviews podcast. I doubt anyone is going to like what he had to say...

During the podcast interview, Hughes(one half of the directing duo, The Hughes Bros) confirmed that he and his bro will indeed be bringing the hugely popular manga adap to the big screen. They had been mentioned in connection with it(something I totally forgot to cover in my last article, apologies!)but it now seems that the duo behind From Hell and The Book Of Eli will be the men for the unenviable job.

During the podcast, Hughes revealed the following. Its most likely that we will be getting a PG13 Akira. When asked about it being an R, he at first said

”You would think,”,

But then revealed that WB want them to bring it in at a much safer(and more financially beneficial)PG13.

“The first thing they said to me was it had to be PG-13,”

Great. But it gets even worse. Hughes said of the highly complex plot.

“I want to simplify everything for the audience.”.

And get this, Hughes says that contrary to what we have heard, the films will not be shot back to back and the dude isn't even sure he will stick around for the second movie!

“I’m not into sequels, I don’t even know if I wanna be around for the sequel. I’m just focusing on the first movie.”.

Well, thats passion and dedication for ya. It seems as if he doesn't even grasp that a second film wouldn't be a sequel, but a continuation of the story thats already laid out in literal black and white!

I was maintaining my optimism for this live action version of by far my favorite Anime(and manga) ever. I could accept the changes we had heard about the switch from Neo Tokyo to New Manhattan, an all American cast etc. And I'm not even that down on The Hughes bros, I think they have talent. From Hell and Book Of Eli had their problems, but they also had their moments. But this is just ridiculous. Until I see something to change my mind, Mr Hughes can shove his PG13, dumbed down half a story up his ass, and WB can follow it.

Too harsh?:)

Oh be sure to listen to the full podcast to hear one of the most cringe-worthy, excruciating examples of ass suckage you will ever experience from the two guys interviewing him. Maybe American Akira won't be so diferent to this after all..

This movie is going to stray so far from the source material they might as well not even call it Akira. Drag Me To Hell and Book of Eli were both crap films (IMO). PG13 rating AND simplifying the plot of Akira.

I'll give this a chance to at least start filming, but I've got low expectations at this point. Seems pretty obvious they have no passion when it comes to this project (or any for that matter) and WB (lol, of coarse it's WB) never has any clue as to what properties they have to how to utilize them properly.

I agree. I hope there will be at least some Asian actors in the cast. I know it's supposed to be set in New-Manhattan, but there are alot of Asians in New York.

Also, there are some really really talented Asian actors out there (and I don't mean talented at Kung-fu), but these people do not get many lead roles simply because they are Asian...or Mexican...or Puerto Rican...

Good god...next thing you know, we'll be hearing of Haley Joel Osment playing Tetsuo, with Mackaulay Culkin playing Kaneda.

In the sequel, Major Kusanagi (Jayne Semour) and Battau (Danny DeVito) will swoop in and save the day...all set against the beautiful backdrop of Brokeback Mountain.

Good god, save my movies!!

I figure the best approach would to have it set in New Manhattan but with a big Japanese influence, like they controlled a big part of the world in this future..kinda like in Blade Runner. That way you could still keep the vibe of the manga and have a nice mix of Asian and American actors to keep the studio happy. That, I could live with. But this is just bullshit. One of the main concepts of Akira alone(Children used as esper zombies for the government) is not pg 13! How the Hell are they gonna swing this.

this sh*t is gonna suck royally!!!! damn, as soon as I heard the 1st rumor, I knew this would be horrible. Why couldn't they just do a simpler anime classic, like Vampire Hunter D, or Wicked City? The plot of Akira is so complex, there's no way it can be dumbed down for the a.d.d. crowd, and pg-13?!!! have WB execs even seen Akira?! so wack!

Watchmen didn't bomb. It just didn't make an obscene amount of cash. It was also very well received by the critics and the public.

this could be one of the best movies ever if made right. has to be as close to the manga as pos.. as def got to be hard .R.... but as we all no and fear this will probably... all go tits up...hollywood style....pray this gets done right been waitin along time for this one........
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 6/22/2010, 12:48 PM
It COULD just about get away with a very hard pg13, MAYBE. All of those things Grif mentions happen sure, but they aren't necessarily vital parts of the story. If they really focused on doing justice to the story and the characters I could handle the pg13. Sort of.

all this pg-13 nonsense has to go...kids see rated R movies anyways. dialing down a movie kills everything. there are ways to explain a story without butchering it. when are they going to realize. how many more movies have to bomb before they figure it out. im surprised the hughes bros. would even do it after being forced to make it pg-13. i guess an R rating is like NC-17 nowadays.

This makes me sick. it's just a bunch of so called artists canabalizing what they deam marketable about a movie and repackaging it to shove it down our collective throats. what ever happened to taking a chance being creative. they're taking away what people liked about that movie :
a) it's adult take an otherwise out there story, which serves to draw you in
b) it's eye for detail. that movie unlike allot of animation was drawn/shot in such away that it lmost appears like their is sombody filming it. let some other guys filter this and you lose the original vision.

What's really sad if somebody wanted to actual do this movie they can't after somebody [frick]ing butchers it like this. i have all the comics, seen the movie a bagillion times. it needs somebody with a unique cinamatic eye, a real college effort.

THIS HONESTLY SLIGHTLY DEPRESSES ME

This is typical Hollywood arrogance. These arrogant morons think that they can improve a great story, when what they do to it is completely ruin what made the original work. They don't give a flying f about why people like the character. We've seen more bad movies than I can count because of this attitude. People like this shouldn't be allowed anywhere near anything that is remotely cool.

They want to add Akira to their list of victims? Fine. I won't waste one dime of my money on it. And I'll do as much as I can to convince others to join me.

This is what I was afraid of. Does WB get off on failure? Akira is a very violent movie with the full spectrum of adult themes. It is one of those films that you can't substitute Disney character and expect it to do well. Just rename it and put Megan Fox as the lead character and there you go.

the problem is WB is gonna be afraid movies like watchmen and Jonah Hex were big tent pole Rated R films and they both did'nt do well
