Original EDGE OF TOMORROW Screenwriter Tackling AKIRA For WB

The first screenwriter to work on Edge of Tomorrow, back when the movie was still known as All You Need Is Kill, is reportedly working on the Akira script with director Jaume Collet-Serra.

Buried in a Deadline article about Dante Harper signing on Fox 2000's The Secret of the Temple, is an aside that Harper is also working on Warner Bros.' live-action adaptation of the Katsuhiro Otomo's manga and 1988 anime, Akira. Yes, that on again, off again film just won't die.  Back in January 2012, Warner Bros. shutdown production on the live-action Akira film, despite securing the talented cast of Garret Hedlund, Ken Watanabe, Helena Bonham Carter and  Kristen Stewart. Now, it seems Serra is back at work and the studio has turned to Harper to craft the script for another tricky, Eastern intellectual property. Harper wrote the very first draft of All You Need Is Kill, the spec script which resulted in a bidding war that saw the studio purchase the script for $3 million dollars (however, the numerous changes to the script after the purchase resulted in Harper not being credited for his work by the Writers Guild).

Reportedly, WB got cold feet about the $90 million dollar production budget for Akira and pulled the plug on the project.  Since then, Serra has been working to make the feature film smaller and naturally, less costly.  It's interesting that WB has now turned to Harper to work on the project, seeing that Edge of Tomorrow had an estimated budget of $178 million dollars.  Has the global box office success ($351.5 million USD) of that film made WB less nervous about making a $100 million dollar Akira adaptation?

Needs to be an asian cast. No Neo New York bullshit or the fans will revolt! You don't want another [frick]en Last Airbender bullshit on your hands.

Sad thing is WB is run by a Japanese guy. If he allows them to whitewash it then there is no hope for mangas in Hollywood.

I personally hope this movie never gets made.

Yes please.

Although I always thought of "Tetsuo the iron man" as the live action version of Akira.

WB should also make their own Asa Akira movie.

WB, take note.

When someone called "TheAmericanPatriot"... Let me repeat this: "TheAmericanPatriot" is worried about whitewashing then you had best believe it's a real issue.

Oh fvck me, here we go again.
WB, prove your worth more than 80 Billion. Do this right, this time. Trilogy. Base the first one on a mixture of the first two Manga and the anime. Second one on Books 3 and 4 and the third one on Books 5 and 6. Japanese names means Japanese people. Set it in Neo-Tokyo. Not rocket science. Shoot it in English. American accents too. But Japanese actors. Nobody's demanding subtitles.

Perhaps this script won't replace nearly all of the Asian characters. And for the love of all that's holy, just pleeeease keep it set in Tokyo.

And big budget. This thing could be huge. Treat it like LOTR.

the best they can hope for with this material is a one-off cult smash. It's just too weird to go mainstream

Did you read the manga ? It's incredible. WAAAAY better than the movie, which truncated entire storylines to fit the plot into 120 minutes.

I really hope they get an all Asian cast. 47 Ronin came close to an all Asian cast. I really hope this movie will be great. The movie has a lot of potential of being great. That is if the studio will do justice to the material. As for the cast they casted before. Only Ken Watanabe is Japanese. How hard is it to cast Japanese people for a movie that takes place in Japan?

The dude who directed Non Stop? That was a pretty dumb movie. I felt like they made the entire movie so Liam Neeson could have that zero G, grab the hovering gun and shoot the bad guy in the eye while in mid air slow motion, part.

If this ever gets made, it's a shame that most ppl will look at it as a Chronicle ripoff.

I'm not sure we'll ever get an Asian cast, let alone a Japanese centric one. Maybe we'll get some Japanese or half Japanese actors, but it'll probably or most likely be set in New York or another well known U.S. city.
lapress

They'll propably make it in Neo- New York, keep Akira, the title character Japanese at the very least, and have the cast a mixture of white ,japanese and Samuel L. Jackson

@lapress: The image and sound of Samuel L. Jackson yelling "TETSUOOOOO!!"
is now embedded in my thoughts.
And you know what, I like it!

i never understood the guys that don't want certain adaptations made. I used to love the smurfs and yogi the bear growing up. they each have been made into features films, and i have not seen either of them. what is so hard about just NOT watching movies that you don't want to see?

They've been talking Akira movie about as long as The Flash movie. Yet to see anything concrete on either.

could be great although I think theyd struggle to match Chronicles final showdown which had Akira written all over it, as for an all american cast that doesnt really bother me, I cant help but think basket ball diaries era dicaprio, wahlberg n co couldve made a damn fine tetsuo, kenada n co.

IT COULD BE WONDERFUL HOWEVER THEY MUST KEEP THE ORIGINAL MUSIC BECAUSE THAT WAS PERFECT
