Racebending.com has Launched a Online Petition Protesting All-white Shortlist for ‘Akira’.The website was founded 2009 by fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender who were appalled by the casting discrimination that occurred during the production of the The Last Airbender film adaptation.

Here’s what they posted on there website:

Hollywood is adapting the classic manga and anime AKIRA to the silver screen. Given the current lack of lead roles for actors of color in the science fiction genre, the complex characters of AKIRA would be a great opportunity for Asian American actors. Will directors Albert and Allen Hughes cast Asian American actors to play the iconic roles of Kaneda and Tetsuo?

From the campaign’s Facebook page .(via You Bent My Wookie):

On March 21st, 2011, Deadline.com reported that eight actors have been solicited for the roles of Tetsuo and Kaneda in AKIRA. All of the actors solicited were white. If not in a film called Akira, for characters named Kaneda and Tetsuo, when will Asian Americans get to star in a Warner Bros film?

Please virtually “attend” this petition event to show your support! It will provide us with a headcount so we know how many people feel strongly about this issue.

We would like to present the numbers from this petition to the studio to show them that all media consumers–not just Akira fans and not just Asian Americans–support keeping casting Asian Americans in the lead roles in AKIRA.

In Addition Warner Bros recently revealed a shortlist that indicated only Caucasian actors are currently in the running for the lead roles of Kaneda and Tetsuo in their live-action remake of Akira. The shortlist also showed that the studio is only considering actors ten years older than the originally teenaged characters. But we all knew that it wasn’t going to be a faithful adaptation it’s Hollywood after all.

So how do you guys feel about Warner Bros only considering Caucasian actors?

Insulting and totally pointless!:(

They take a great masterpiece and gang rape it!
That cant be right!

Why not make a great movie and earn lots of money with it! That way they could actually be proud of what they have don!

I say its cheating if you dont try to make a great movie and you make it just because you want the common man´s or woman´s money!
Which is basically what Hollywood is doing nowadays! They dont care about the story! They just take piece from that and that and fill it up with great actors and lots of action and make it PG-13 so kids can see it too and they get more money and when it comes in the theaters everyone thinks "that could be great" and go see it and comes out of the theater disappointed as hell cause it wasnt that great that they first thinked!... [frick]ing sad isnt it?!;)
Like i said why dont make a great movie and earn lots of money with it?! Everybody happy!

Let me start off by saying I personally don't give a $hit.

When a black man gets cast as a white character, and white people complain and protest, they're called racist or what ever term people choose to use.

Now when a white person is being looked at for an apparently Asian role ( no fricking clue what Akira is about) people complain about white washing and say it's not fair.

How the hell does that make any sense?????????

This fag Robert Pattinson should stay the hell away all of the good things and stick to his sparkling vampire fagfest.

@BarneyStinson- i agree and i think i'll add on to what you said a bit... Everyone can protest all you want but... hollywood doesn't care. Otherwise TLA would've had an asian cast in the end it did not(it sucked anyway). There's a chance that it could still be a good sci fi movie people. And don't tell me the whole "oh hollywood is trying to convince people that white people have names like 'kaneda'"... yes, just like they convinced us white people can have the name Neo and black people can have the name morpheus ... it's fiction. get over it.

with that said, i'm not going to see the film. saw the animated film. wasn't a huge fan... now if they made a Cowboy bebop film, i'd be first in line.

I am a big fan of Akira. I would like to see this movie being made. I support having an Asian cast and I'm not asian. I just want the movie to be as close to the source as possible. I figure if I was Asian, I would be kinda pissed.

Still would see the movie if it had a white cast just because I like the manga as long as the actors can act well.

If WB does go with Caucasian actors, it'd be pretty weird if they had Asian names like Kaneda and Tetsuo... I think they'll change the names into something western like Kane and Tate... I hope this doesn't have to happen, or else it'll be a western re-imagining of the anime!!!

If they wanted to whitewash the fricking thing they should have called it something besides Akira. I already joined because we'll never have any "bankable Asian stars" if they never give them a chance besides in supporting roles or low budgeted and lightly marketed martial arts films.

@Killuminatic- its called suspension of belief. i've never met anyone named obi wan kenobi yet i can buy it when watching star wars. So i don't think it'll be a big problem.

Remember America is not a race it's a nationality so that should not be an excuse for preferential Caucasian casting.

they should just Prtest them making the movie totally and not about race, first off, they are not making Akira the Anime or Manga, they are making it an english version that takes place in the us not in japan, so they would be americanpeople asian black white whatever they will be AMERICAN. This movie shouldnt even be made if it was going to be made it should be made in Japan, by the Japanese. Hollywood will just butcher it anyway. As far as this site that is doing the protest, just like when they were making Airbender, the show wasnt about just asians, and the guy who created the show even said, the water tribe where suppose to be like eskimos there were no real cultures
