COMIC CONNECTIONS: Who Is 'Hope Van Dyne'?

During Marvel Studios' Hall H panel, It was revealed that 'Lost' actress Evangeline Lilly would play the newly created, Hope Van Dyne (daughter of Hank Pym) in 2015's 'Ant-Man'. Well, it turns out that she is NOT an original character, and has roots in the comics! Click the jump to find out her connection to Marvel's favorite, bug themed couple.

First appearing in Marvel's MC2 Universe, villainess Hope Pym is the daughter of the deceased Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, and twin sister to Henry Pym, Jr (also know as Big Man).

Known as "The Red Queen", she is best known for founding "The Revengers", and attempting to assassinate The Avengers, and Cassandra Lang (daughter of Scott) whom she, obsessively, believed was a mockery to parent's memory, as well as the "Ant-Man"/"Wasp" mantle.

Her abilities are same as her mother's (Flight, Bio-Electric "stings") minus size manipulation, and is the result of bio-implantation, based on her father's work.

Outside of her MC2 comics appearances, Hope Pym/Van Dyne hasn't appeared elsewhere in the wider Marvel Universe. Which, is why most fans have probably never heard of her.

That said, she serves as an interesting, if not convenient, solution to the problem posed by having an older Hank Pym (played by Michael Douglas), who is (of course) known for his marriage to Janet Van Dyne.

By utilizing the 'Hope' character (in a non-villain capacity), Marvel Studios' now has the ability to portray Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne TOGETHER as Ant-Man and The Wasp, but still have A wasp in the modern day setting, alongside Pym protege, Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd).

So, what do you think about this? Are you okay with Marvel's alternative take on the Ant-Man mythos? Or, would you have rather had a traditional take on the story, and, more specifically, The Wasp? Comment with your answer below.

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Evangeline Lilly, David Dastmalchian, Michael Pena, and Patrick Wilson, and is set for release on July 17, 2015.

Really disappointed.
I'm happy they haven't made Janet the love interest for Lang, but still, Janet and Hank shouldn't have to be like 60-70 years old, they should both be members of the Avengers.

Meh! I wanna be excited :( but nothing I've seen or heard is doing that for me.

:'( Janet's a great female character being wasted.

Agreed. Great casting choice that works well with the comic mythos. It would've been a shame if she were Janet and wasnt with Hank pym.

I bet marvel is planning to make a prequel film at some point too. Maybe a season 2 of one of their netflix series..?

I agree with what CherryBomb said, Janet Van Dyne is too crucial of a character to just skirt to the side.. But I would think Marvel is just saving her and a younger actor for an awesome "period" superhero flick ala CA:TFA.

You can pretty much blame Wright for putting Marvel in the Old Man Pym situation. Maximum freedom of creativity does not equal greatness. Sometimes it just pisses people off like with Iron Man 3.

I don't think it's right for people to blame Wright entirely for this entire Hank and Jan thing. Yeah it's whack having Hank be the age of ODIN and Jan's whereabouts unknown for the moment but Marvel has had this script since 2006 right?! So why is everyone pointing the blame finger at Wright?? :/ If it was that import Marvel would've been made those script changes before all of this last minute stuff that happened this year. They had enough time to get things straight if they really wanted Ant-Man to be a part of Phase 1 or 2 so it's whatever.

Can you imagine if a young Hank Pym is in the Agent Carter tv show?

Yay!!! Now instead of wanting Edgar wright back we can hate on him!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO!!!

m0th3r - 7/27/2014, 8:34 AM
Well.. because its his fault. He was set to make the film, delayed, caused A1 to be changed, then came on board and after 5 years of Marvel/Disney adjusting their program for him, he couldn't play ball.Old Man Pym storyline is 100% Wrights baby...Hank wouldnt have gotten a phase 1 movie, but he would have made the Avengers with Janet if we didnt have Edgar playing with his junk...

LegendaryOutlaw - 7/27/2014, 8:36 AM
@TheRationalBeard because EDGAR has been working on that script since even before 2006 if I'm correct. They let him work on it for so long but because of him they're put in this situation.

It's an old Pym. We've known this for a long time. Get over it people!
And Janet is not his wife but his daughter and you're still bitching.

LOL at spazzes who keep saying "meh, I'm not interesting", and yet keep commenting on Ant-Man articles.

@Arrowhead I think Wilson out is a strategy...when he came on there was no Agent Carter show..i think (and hopefuly redeem) Hank Pym as part of the 50-60's Marvel era....Now they will cast someone cheaper who will do TV...

I just think it's a wasted opportunity.

You get Hank as the main star of the movie.
Have him for as long as you want and then when the actor is too old or you wanna mix things up and have the character die or retire THEN you bring in Lang.

Like with Bucky and Cap, Rhodey and probably Tony Stark. Etc...

@m0th3r and @xStarLordx

Yeahhh I see where you all are getting at now, I guess his film would've felt more stand alone than connected do the MCU. But I won't grab my pitchforks for the guy. lol I'm sure there will be a great outcome despite all of this confusion for now.

I agree dethpillow. I Hope (ha!) both Janet and Hank have some kind of role in Agent Carter. I haven't been following much of Agent Carter news, but seeing the Invaders in the show won't be a bad thing either. I'm glad they are going with an older Hank. Maybe they can show that he had some indirect way of creating ultron. Maybe he created the AI that Tony uses for JARVIS that leads to Ultron. Maybe hank is so pissed off at the Avengers that he flips the switch on the AI. That would be cool.

Oh so its an actual character? I thought all of the huge ant man fans who hated this knew everything about it and were so sure about it being an original character?

I've never really cared a ton about this movie, but I do blame Wright for this. 10 movies into the MCU and there hasn't been anything close to the craziness like this. I don't think thats a coincidence.

So relieved that Evangeline isn't playing Janet. I didn't want a Janet/Scott pairing. I rather Janet be older and connected to Hank. In the MCU, Kevin Feige says they won't tackle the abuse story so I can be happy that these two are together or just naturally drifted apart.. Perhaps there will be a future movie that shows a younger Hank and Janet but at least I know they both exist in the same timeline. At least Marvel has solved one big issue I had with this movie -to get Wasp to modern times and potentially be part of the Avengers. As well as avoiding Janet as a love interest to Scott.

I think that's what Marvel is going for, I really think were going to see a young Hank and Janet on the Agent Carter show leading up to the release of Ant-Man
