As expected, Avengers: Age of Ultron is kicking ass at the international box office, earning an amazing $44.8 million in just two days from only 26 markets. It's broken a number of opening day records in various territories and will have debuted in around 55% of them before tomorrow. It's currently #1 at each and every single one of them and is the movie which kicks off 2015's blockbuster season. When it does reach North America next weekend, it's expected to easily surpass the $207.4 million earned by The Avengers back in 2012. Going back to this weekend though, and The Hollywood Reporter believes that the movie will end up with upwards of $175 million worldwide. Whether or not it will end up topping $1.5 billion by the end of its run remains to be seen, but if there's any movie which deserves to take down Avatar, it's this one...

Sad to say but Avatar will hold on to that crown.......... and that movie was horrible. Though I really hop this gets close.

Star Wars has a shot at avatar. No summer movie can take down avatar. To many other options to take dollars away. Star Wars Is a winter movie. only real competition in the action genre is Deadpool and that's rated R.

I would agree but a winter release will not cut the mustard!

@lubedup yeh the one I went to wasn't as packed as I expected, but I guess because the general public will just assume it comes out today and traditionally go to the cinema on fri/sat/sun

I still don't understand for the life of me how Avatar was able to gross $3B. I can't imagine AOU taking it down though. AOU will have 2 weekends in the US until Mad Max opens on the 15th. Mad Max looks so good to me that I think it will have a chance of knocking AOU down to #2. The first Avengers had serious legs, will this one be able to exceed it?

Avatar had new technology that was jaw dropping for the time, released during the slow winter season with no competition, word of mouth and James Cameron's name as the director.

I've seen it 3 times now and it actually gets better with each viewing. Solid 8.5 or 9 out of 10 for me.

Gonna see it next week in IMAX hopefully :D

@Dotanuki

It was a perfect storm for Avatar.....

There was no big competition, it ran in theaters form quite some time, word of mouth, and the larger ticket prices because you had to see it in 3D.

I guess some people may say the same thing about how well Titanic did........

If AOU does not come close than no CBM will come close as well.

Even if AOU didn't take down Avatar, you can be damn sure that either Civil War, Infinity War Part I, or Infinity War Part II will.

I agree with all of that. I wonder how many moviegoers saw it more than once in the theater. If it's massive success was also a function of multiple viewings. Damn impressive for such a lackluster movie.

Nope sorry! Wishful thinking, you would think after the success of IM3 the following movies would have done extremely well.

Like I said this would be the movie to do it!

This movie fails! Sloppy pacing, cringe dialogue & Hulk's crappy cgi didnt help..

This made the X-men 3: The Last Stand look like Cap 2.
