Disney Reportedly Considered AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON A "Failure"

While Avengers: Age of Ultron earned a mighty $1.4 billion worldwide, Disney apparently considered the movie a failure! Why? Well, you can find out all about that after the jump, along with details on how this factors into Marvel Studios parting ways with Marvel Entertainment...

Over the past few days, we've been hearing a lot about why Marvel Studios decided to move under the watch of Disney instead of Marvel Entertainment's CEO Isaac Perlmutter, and now Bleeding Cool may have another reason to add to the already pretty long list. While Kevin Feige and Ike had been at loggerheads for a while, it was apparently Avengers: Age of Ultron which was the straw that broke the camel's back. Apparently, Disney weren't happy with its $1.4 billion haul. That's a lot of money, but not enough, and not what many expected after the success of the first instalment and the Phase 2 releases which preceded it. The site adds that, "as a result, at Disney, it has been dubbed a failure. Which enabled Kevin Feige to use it leverage to push out Isaac Perlmutter."

Early on, many fans and analysts predicted that Avengers: Age of Ultron would top Avatar and Titanic as the highest grossing movie of all-time. While it was a million miles away from being a flop and still made Disney a lot of money, they clearly didn't get back as much as they expected. The site promises to reveal more about the divide between Feige and Ike, so stay tuned for updates...

Ladies and gentlemen, we now live in a world where $1 billion films can now be considered box office "failures."

Wow.

Since these changes also involved the disbanding of the "creative committee" and AOU got worse reviews than the first, and there has been lots of disagreements and conflicts within the studio, etc I think this may be more of a failure on Disney/Marvel's part in that sense too. I feel like the process and production of making the Avengers also was a lot smoother.

I actually think it's good to hear this, because it shows that Disney/Marvel care about their future and want to make good movies. I mean money is important of course, without it we wouldn't have the MCU, but I think they are looking at the big picture too.

And, it didn't make as much as Avengers 1 either, so, there is need for Disney to take action and assess, especially with all of the crazy stuff going on in the background with Permuteer, etc

Yeah, and it gets so much better. I ended up respecting the hell out of Pablo Escobar, which was probably the wrong message to take away.

Cool, good find man. Totally, I have so much respect for Kevin Feige too. If you've seen interviews with him and how he deals with press and presents himself in general, he's such a cool, together, and well developed guy. I can only imagine all of the headaches that this and all of the behind the scenes stuff w/ Permutter, etc, has caused him, but he handles it well, he's in it for the long haul.

I saw his notes for TASM 2 in those Sony emails and he was right on and also direct and respectful in his responses.

Whoa.

So Disney bought Marvel for 4 billion. Whedon with AOU gives them more than a quarter of that back IN ONE GODDAMN MOVIE....and they consider it a failure....sounds like Ike wasn't that bad of boss. Damn. No pressure Russos and Feige. Good luck with that. Looks like all the success Marvel made is now coming back to bite them in the ass.

Poor Whedon, man.... Jesus. Dude can't catch a break. Just want to give him a hug.

I personally didn't like the second film as much as the first. But I still think it was a good movie. Plus it made over a billion dollars and to me that's a good amount. Another thing is this doesn't include the merchandise and other licenses Disney made on the movie. So it's just crazy to think a billion is a failure.

Pretty insane that 1.4 billion dollars can be called a failure. Still, looks like it's lead to something pretty good. From what I understand, Feige fully being the boss man now will bring nothing but great things in the future.

Besides Marvel fanboys, who would predict that?

Sequels don't always do better than the original in box office.

None of the original Batman films outgrossed 89.
None of the Star Wars films outgrossed A New Hope.
Spidey 2 didn't outgross Spidey 1.

Yea. AoU should have been the first $2 billion movie. Still did greater than most movies could ever fathom. But, too many cooks in the kitchen, and a far too Whedon-ized villain.

So Marvel kicks out its actual comicbook writers in favor of Disney, and it's amazing.

But then people give WB/DC/Snyder sh!t for "straying too much from the comicbooks".

C'mon, I can't be the only one noticing this.
