Geek god has Joss Whedon has reassembled Earth’s mightiest heroes,
The Avengers, to take on James Spader’s titular villain in
Age of Ultron. Expectations are high for the sequel to 2012’s third highest grossing movie of all time but does
Age of Ultron have as many jaw dropping moments as the first instalment? Between awkward Hulk and Black Widow flirting and Hawkeye’s DIY dilemma, the sequel packs plenty of punch and has moments to rival that of the now iconic “puny god” scene in the first film. Featuring cameos of characters from every corner of the Nine Realms and battle sequences shot on multiple continents,
Age of Ultron truly has GIF worthy, breath-taking moments. Before you get started let me remind you again, this editorial will contain
MAJOR SPOILERS for anyone who has yet to see the movie. If that's the case why not bookmark the link and let me know what you think after you've seen it!
10. Welcome home, Hawkeye!
Hawkeye is pleasingly front and centre this time round where he proves to be a key member of the Avengers roster.
Age of Ultron reveals a pretty big secret about the master archer in the form of a pregnant wife and two children. This scene in Clint Barton’s cabin in the woods provides a break from the intense action sequences but more importantly sheds some light on Hawkeye’s motivations to be a hero – his family. The scene also foreshadows a falling out between Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers, revelations about Black Widow’s past and her inability to have tiny Hulk babies and it also features the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s one eyed Nick Fury as well.
9. Thanos Rises
Maintaining the tradition of a Thanos related mid credits scene, the Mad Titan’s appearance is short and sweet.
Avenegrs: Age of Ultron deals with the Infinity Gems more than any other Marvel film to date so Thanos’s appearance ties it all together nicely. The scene does not reveal much other than it is time for Thanos to take matters into his own gauntlet wearing hand and ignite an Infinity War.
8. The Helicarrier Lives
Whether influenced by Man of Steel or not, Age of Ultron deals heavily with the protection of civilians amidst the chaos. Just when it appears than millions may perish, Nick Fury, Maria Hill and a battle worn helicarrier arrive equipped with life boats to save the citizens of Sokovia. It is a welcome sight to see Fury in his black trench coat standing proudly in the centre of the helicarrier fulfilling as Captain America remarks, the real purpose of S.H.I.E.L.D.
7. Vibranium Mayhem
Andy Serkis’s debut as Ulysses Klaw is a memorable one amongst the scramble for the near impenetrable metal, vibranium. In one of many all-out Avengers action sequences, this features a battle of the psyche more than body courtesy of Scarlet Witch’s mind medalling. Black Widow’s past is explored through ballet and cold blooded killing, Thor takes a verbal pounding from Idris Elba’s Heimdall and Captain America’s finally gets his dance with Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter. A gem in Whedon’s writing, Hawkeye’s tongue in cheek reference towards his distaste for mind control proves why this is really his moment in the spotlight.
6. Death by 20th Century FOX
We all knew it was coming but it still packed an emotional punch. Quicksilver’s death in
Age of Ultron provides the speedster with a fitting conclusion. After distrusting the Avengers, Pietro’s dies trying to save Hawkeye and a child embodying the qualities that make Quicksilver, in his final moments, one of Earth’s mightiest heroes. His twin sister Wanda witnesses his death and unleashes a glimpse of what a fully powered Scarlet Witch can achieve. Whether
X-Men: Days of Future Past's version of Quicksilver is responsible for the character's one and done role is uncertain but regardless, an Avenger had to go to raise the stakes.
5. Party Crasher
After spending some time playing with Thor’s hammer, The Avenger’s party is rudely interrupted by a newly created Ultron who immediately wreaks havoc on the party goers. The scene is nicely balanced with every character from Maria Hill to Tony stark proving their worth. Ultron’s debut showcases the character’s snarky personality whilst making his intentions clear. Ultron is ruthless from the get go which quickly establishes him as a serious threat. Stan Lee’s token cameo is one of his best as he calls out his famous catchphrase ‘excelsior’ as he is escorted away in a drunken state.
4. Who you gonna call... HULKBUSTER!
The Hulkbuster scene is sure to be a fan favourite and crowd pleaser. Over the course of the MCU, Stark has worn more suits of armour than Stan Lee’s had cameo’s but the Hulkbuster is a mark above the rest. The suit, which operates under the codename 'Veronica', is kept in space in and only to be used when the Hulk has an uncontrollable code green. Not only does it come with a pit stop of spare parts, the suit does provide a real match for the Hulk who has little trouble turning Ultron’s robot minions into scrap metal.
3. Avengers Recruitment Drive
The final scenes of the film really do give a sense of what is to come. Tony and Steve comment on how they will miss one another, Thor sets off for answers about the ever appearing Infinity Gems and Falcon, War Machine, Vision and Scarlet Witch are ready to begin Avenging 101. A new Avengers/ S.H.I.E.L.D. hybrid training centre is established with the likes of Helen Cho and Erik Selvig joining the facility. It is a fitting end to Joss Whedon’s stint with Marvel but it also leaves open a world of possibilities for the next phase of movies to explore.
2. Behold… The Vision
Paul Bettany’s debut as the android ‘Vision’ is stunning. After years of being Tony Stark’s voice of reason, Bettany’s live action upgrade to the part machine Vision might just be the most human performance in the entire movie. The Vision is not interested in Ultron’s destruction or desire to end the Avengers, he is instead fighting on behalf of life. From the costume to his abilities and even his motivations, Joss Whedon nails every aspect of the character. Not only is Vision worthy of Thor’s Mjölnir but he also possess the mind stone; one of the Infinity Gem’s that Thanos seeks. Vision is definitely one to watch in future Marvel movies.
1. On your marks, get set, Avenge!
The heart racing opening attack on Baron Von Strucker’s HYDRA base is hard to top. The sequence brings to life everything fans love about The Avengers. The action and stunts are super cool and the dialogue is as sharp as Loki’s sceptre creating a seamless transition into a film with a cast larger than a football team. The establishing minutes not only introduce the enhanced Maximoff twins, they also call back to the previous movie in the form of a giant Chitauri alien. Whedon throws the audience in at the deep end and sets a pace that continues to build throughout the film’s 2 hours and 22 minutes running time. Plus, who can forget that money shot of the team in action that looks like it has been lifted from the panels of a comic book?
