Kevin Feige Debunks Using 'Inhumans' To Get Around 'Mutants' In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

While also commenting on when Doctor Strange will hit the big-screen, Marvel Studios' head addresses rumors of Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch being called "inhumans" to avoid their mutant heritage

Given that Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox share partial rights to the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, and only the latter company can acknowledge the characters' true mutant heritage, Marvel have to go another route for the superhero twins' roles in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. While we may learn of that route by the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Kevin Feige was asked by The Huffington Post yesterday if the Inhumans will be used as a leeway.

"Well, Inhumans is something that we are definitely thinking about and we think there's great potential there for a great movie," he said. "But, no, no -- we have not linked those two." Asked to clarify that the Inhumans have nothing to do with Marvel Studios getting around Mutants, he said "As it relates to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver? No. No, no, no." Judging by Feige's latter comment, it could just be the Maximoffs (played by Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson) that will not be considered Inhumans, however, there are additional superpowered characters rumored.

On another Marvel front, Kevin Feige was also asked if it's safe to say that a Doctor Strange movie could hit screens in the next two or three years. "So, we're in 2014 now ..." he started. "It's time. It's time. I would be surprised if that were the case, yeah. Maybe three or four years, yeah, we'll see. But, I would like it to be the case. Much like Vin Diesel, I like it when something finally happens, and then we can talk about what it is -- versus rumors of what it could be or should be or isn't yet [laughs]." This response isn't all that surprising in light of recent reports that Marvel Studios is meeting with potential Doctor Strange directors. The shortlist reportedly includes: Scott Derrickson (Sinister), Mark Andrews (Brave), & Jonathan Levine (50/50 ). What do you think?

UPDATE: Regarding that Doctor Strange director shortlist, Kevin Feige offered Slash Film a bit of an update: "We’ve met with all of [those three]. Some of those three are not in contention anymore," he says. "Some of those three we’re still talking with and there are many others. We have not narrowed it down as much as the internet thinks. I wish we had."

The Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, with Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, and James Spader. The film is set for release on May 1, 2015.

That should start a nice flame-war.

He needs to move ahead on an Inhumans movie.
That's a property that has to be done!

I wonder how they're going to tackle the Maximoff's powers then? I hope it's not genetic testing or something.
Making then Inhumans would've been the best way to introduce Black Bolt.

Making them Inhumans would be stupid. That would change their whole backstory.

As far as I am concerned they are still mutants and the children of Magneto, even though Marvel doesn't have the rights to depict those things on screen. We just have to use our imagination.

I was actually kinda hoping they would call them Inhumans. But only because of the relationship QS had with an Crystal and had a child.

@ProfessorX

They're going to have to change their whole backstory anyways because mutants, and therefore Magneto, don't exist in the MCU.

miracles is fine if that's what it is. mutant sounds racist ;) lol its a blessing to be born with abilities yay! no more socio-economic films centered around William stryker and racism. racism is bad we get it now move on to a different story **cough**singer**cough**

sKeemAn - 3/13/2014, 7:01 AM
But if they are going to have an Inhumans movie later. Explaining their origin, its a good move to not call them inhumans. I do not like "miracles" though. I say don't call them anything at this point. They are the wonder twins.

From what I understand they can literally call them "people who's genes have mutated over countless years of evolution which has resulted in them being gifted" as long as they don't use the actual word 'mutants'. So by that logic can't mutants exist in the MCU as long as people don't call them mutants?

80sFace - 3/13/2014, 7:11 AM
3 or 4 years for Strange. So...2017 or 2018.

May hint that they're focused on the stories they're already telling:

2016 - Thor 3, Cap 3
2017 - GotG 2, Ant-Man 2, Hulk 2, or Strange
2018 - Avengers 3, Strange?

OR...

2016 - Cap 3, Hulk 2
2017 - Thor 3, GotG 2
2018 - Avengers 3, Ant-Man 2 or Strange

I think they do exist though, but they just can't be explicitly mentioned or depicted on screen.

It sounds like all he has "debunked" here is that quicksilver and scarlet witch won't be inhumans, and I take that with a grain of salt, how else are they going to explain it? If they're super-soldier serum related then that's comical.

Marvel would probably get away with a vague reference to their "father", so long as they don't name him.

Marvel NOT using inhumans to replace mutants in the movies.
Well, he said so. So it must be so.

Marvel NOT using inhumans to replace mutants in the comics.
Well now, this is where it gets dicey. Marvel is definitely invading mutant territory with there current mega-crossover-super-special-story-event. And why? Why encroach on the mutants well established copyright on genetic persecution?
And when you go looking for answers, the most likely explanation in this marketing-driven era we seem to find ourselves in, is that it's a an effort (like almost every comic change of direction Marvel Comics has made in the past 2 or 3 years) it's an effort to support "something" in the MCU.
Oh, I'm sure there are those that will say it doesn't indicate anything. It's a good story all by itself.
I say hogwash.
I think (as others have said before me) the reason is obvious. In spite of Feige's comments to the contrary, Inhumans will be present, no matter how covertly, as mutant stand ins

BUT . . . I'll watch and enjoy the movie anyway, because the MCU is not the Marvel Comics 616 universe.
And . . . I'm okay with that now. I've taken my thorazine.

Calling them miracles is a little goofy. Yea, it's a miracle they're born wih gifts but people would still fear them. Maybe WS and Wanda are the first but why'd it take so long to have "miracles"??What's the origin gonna be??? If it's that they're just evilved humans then that's making them mutants. Why are QS and WANDA the only "miracles"?? Why hasn't the world discovered more?? In humans would've been okay with me. I'm betting they're genetic test experiments done by HYDRA or aliens such as the KREE or SKRULLS. I don't think Marvel wants to make them seem too similar to mutants cause then people would gripe over Sony and Marvel not joining forces. Experimentation makes sense. Evilved humans...idk. Then, if they're evolved there should be more than just Piotor and Wanda. Why just them?

@Marvel72:
Sounds like it, yeah.
*sigh*

@Pasto:
Dr Strange doesn't have many fans, we've become used to waiting and seeing our man get manhandled by Bendis (among others, but Bendis was spectacularly bad at writing Stephen). Heck, its been over a decade since he's had his own title. I've yet to collect his entire back catalog so I still have something to read but I can't imagine how it is for the fans who've stuck with him from the beginning.

Strange has been mangled and trampled into the dust for so long its become his status quo that he's a mopey guy who constantly doubts his abilities.

So yeah, an opinion like that won't do much, Marvel's writers are way ahead of you.

Fox might have the rights to the term "mutant", but that doesn't mean they own the idea. There are lots of Avengers characters who are mutants that Marvel can use, and they don't have to make them into Inhumans or change their backstory, etc. Just don't call them by that particular term ("mutant") on screen.

Can someone explain something to me?
How do we know who and what Marvel owns the rights to. I was suggesting future MCU villains to someone and they kept debunking a few because they first appeared in a FF mag.
Well, the Inhumans first appeared in a FF mag. They actually only appeared FF for a while before branching out.
Even Crystal was a member of the FF for a while while dating Johnny Storm. So, how can Marvel use them but not Galactus or Dr. Doom who all started out in FF but branched out to other titles?
