Whatever happened to the Scarlet Witch? Among other thoughts on Age of Ultron

As we all know, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are being used for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

There's been a lot of debate as to whether they should have been included in the film. Many believe that Ant-Man and Wasp should be used in favour, because they would serve more purpose to the story. Personally I think from a narrative perspective it makes more sense for the audience to emote with Tony Stark over his creation of Ultron than Hank Pym who wouldn't have been built up prior to the film.

Most of the debate has been about Marvel trying to "mark their territory" with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, especially Quicksilver.

A lot of people seem to forget Scarlet Witch's connection to Ultron's "son"
The Vision. I think it's quite likely we'll see Vision in the film. I can't imagine more than one Avengers film being based around Ultron, so this would be the best time to introduce him.

I would imagine he would serve as an antagonist throughout the film, working as a pawn for Ultron. Well, until the climax of the film when he ultimately betrays Ultron helping the Avengers take him down. Scarlet Witch could be the catalyst that humanizes the Vision during the course of the film.

Sound your thoughts out in the comments.

I would prefer to have Hank Pym as the creator, but Tony Stark's character arc does lead in to this well. Ultron will be the central plot of the film. Hank Pym carrying the main plot of the film with no real prior appearance just doesn't really work. Scarlet Witch and Vision would only be more of a sub-plot and more feasible.

My idea would be have Tony jump in on an abandoned S.H.I.E.L.D project salvaged from the files he stole in the Avengers. The A.I would be based on the brain patterns of what S.H.I.E.L.D considered to be the perfect candidate, Hank Pym. The fact that it is Hank Pym's brain patterns is only alluded to in the film and then revealed in a post-credits scene. Which all leads nicely in to Ant-Man.

This means Tony gets the emotional baggage of releasing a genocidal A.I on the world. Then if Ant-Man joins the Avengers in part 3 he has to deal with the guilt that he has the potential to be a genocidal maniac. This could create a source of conflict between the two mega genius'.

i try not to judge a film before i see it like when people where complaining about iron man 3 or more recently people are saying the wolverine is crap. so until i see it im confident whedon and everyone involved will do a great job. what im most conserened about is what ultron will look like cos he needs to look badass.

@Batmaniac
No one knew who created Ultron, smart guy. Later on (not long after his debut), Ultron reveals his origin, having hypnotized Pym into forgetting about him.

And please, their relationship is hardly that iconic. It COULD have been at one point, but Ultron quickly became Skynet.

Don't you think it's kind of weird that Pym suddenly decides to take a break from size manipulation and builds an artificial intelligence in his spare time?
Sorry, I just don't see how conventionally (in the MCU) Pym could build something superior to Stark tech.

What I can buy, is that JARVIS is built by Pym, and JARVIS evolves into Ultron. And since JARVIS is the one who actually does the building when it comes to the armors, it would definitely be able to construct its own mobile platform.

I really like the idea of Wanda acting as a Betty Ross to Ultron's Vision. Not quite sure what's so special about her that makes him question his programming, but that's an obstacle they'd be able to figure out at Marvel.

I'm interested in what their interpretation of Vision would be like. Would he be like the Terminator from T2? Would he mimic personalities for comedic effect? I hope he's in it.

Ok but consider this. What possible future would Pym have in the MCU if he created an artificial intelligence that led to the largest security breach in the history of the world?

Seriously, you're going to introduce this scientist in this sequel, then you're going to have him screw up THAT badly....

No man, the Avengers would kick em out. Audiences wouldn't care about the Ant-Man movie afterwards... it would just be an epic fail for all parties.

And I'm not even saying that Pym shouldn't or couldn't be involved in the creation of Ultron. But I don't think that should be revealed until later. Also, why couldn't an AI who can transfer his program all over the planet.... why couldn't this guy come back for a sequel and expand upon your beloved Frankenstein nonsense?

Like imagine if Batman had made his cinematic debut in a Tower of Babel adaptation. As in, no Adam West tv series, no Burton or Schumacher, no Nolan, just straight up Justice League.

Would the audience be able to just get over it? Maybe, he is BATMAN, but at the same time, it wouldn't make sense in a movie setting for the team to just forgive him for coming up with all these ideas on how to incapacitate them. They'd lock him up.

Anyone find this kinda funny...

Quicksilver in DoFP Avengers...

Fox displays sentinels, then we get Age of Ultron announcement...
Seeing as both are skynet rip-offs, chances are that they will bothe be repersented simularly on screen. I.e. plot devices, action scenes, etc... Even in the comics, master mold isn't that far off from ultron, functionality wise, anyway. I know their stories are very different...

Cast and crew working on DoFP calls the movie "Fox's Avengers"...

DoFP, a movie that could potentially retcon fox's MCU being released a year before Avengers.

Marvel shoe-horning 2 more heroes in to the Avengers Sequel for no real reason at all. And they Happen to be mutants. Joss doesn't NEED QS and S W to tell an ultron story. Like it was said above, might as well used Ant and Wasp. Its not like the General Audience is more aware or connected to one duo than the other. Its not like any of that kharacter have even been hinted at in any of the solo films, which is also unprecedented...

There's too many concidences to be a concidence if u know what I mean. Either Fox and Marvel are seriously going at it. Or the projects are connected...

However, if I were a betting man, I would say that...

Marve did the nice thing and gave Fox a heads up that they were gonna use QS and SW. So, Fox approached Marvel about merging Cinematic Universes seeing as the MCU is a cash cow and the X-men franchise is doing worse with every movie released. Marvel shot them down because the FCU sucks, can't keep a straight continuity like the MCU has and they would lose a lot of face with the fans. So, fox got pissed. They fasttracked DOFP, got as many stars as they could and even started using ideas and characters that they knew Marvel was using. Why, just to give Marvel the finger and try to Steal AV2's thunder snd some of it's potential box office.

Oh yeah... Did I forget to mention the AvX comic even that happened about the same time both movies started production...?

I like this idea from IGN.com;

"Pym wasn’t revealed as Ultron’s creator until after his debut in the Avengers comics. While that sort of retroactive flashback storytelling doesn’t lend itself as well to film as it does to comics, it’s possible that the Ant-Man movie could ultimately reveal that Pym (inadvertently) created Ultron. It’d be a heck of a character beat, knowing that all that (probable) destruction caused by Ultron in Avengers 2 was essentially his fault."

...but I'm not sure how this could tie into the expected JARVIS = Ultron storyline.

One idea is that Marvel can keep the original idea from years back and have the Ant-Man film be partly set in the 1960's/70's with Pym and modern day with Lang. Pym can then be seen designing something for SHIELD which Tony unknowingly downloaded when he hacked SHIELD during the Avengers and cuased Jarvis to change during Avengers2...

Whedon said this about QS & SW, “You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with the Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier”.

Since the MCU can't mention Magento or Mutant I think QS&SW's powers will perhaps be linked to the weapons developed by S.H.I.E.L.D, which would tie into them reverse engineering Asgardian Technology (as seen in 'The Avengers') and Alien Technolgy (as seen in 'Item 47'), and/or the continued development of Extremis (first seen in 'Iron Man 3'). There is also the Brain Slot mentioned in 'Iron Man 3', which could come into play.

It does seem strange to include them at all, unless there is a long term plan to introduce Vision as an ongoing character.

The new additions of Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver are likely to be key to the story, perhaps with their powers being linked to the 'brain slot' concept as mentioned in 'Iron Man 3'. They could be villains at some point in the story.
