We're very sad to report that William Hurt has passed away. The Academy Award-winning actor, who played General "Thunderbolt" Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was 71 years old.

His son, Will, confirmed the news with the following post. Though it's not mentioned here, the actor is believed to have been battling cancer for some time.

“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes. The family requests privacy at this time.”

Hurt received three consecutive Academy Awards nominations for Best Actor for Kiss of the Spider Woman (which he won), Children of a Lesser God , and Broadcast News. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for A History of Violence.

Hurt debuted as Ross in The Incredible Hulk, before reprising the role years later for Captain America: Civil War. He went on to appear as the character in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and the recent Black Widow movie.

Our thoughts go out to Hurt's family and friends during this difficult time.

Very very sad! RIP to a true Hollywood legend. Loved his Thunderbolt Ross. I wonder if he shot anything for She Hulk. I remember reading Red Hulk may make an appearance. Hopefully, they’re able to write around him or do the man justice in what could possibly be his last role.

RIP. Glad they brought him back but shame he never got to have scenes with Ruffalo.

@TheSuperMex - Weird how they basically actively avoided putting them on screen together

Hulk was cut from Civil War, where Ross finally returned

Legendary actor. A History of Violence one of my favourite films, and his role one of my favourite performances. Will be missed

@Cap1 - He is great in Altered States, underrated little gem. You can kinda see he wasn't looking his best in his Black Widow cameo but he still crushed it.

@UncleHarm1 - I agree. The difference in his appearance from Endgame to Black Widow was immediately noticeable to me.

In one article I read a few minutes ago, "In 2018, it was revealed that he had terminal prostate cancer that had spread to the bone."

Dam, we lost a good one folks.

I did think something was up with him when I saw him in Black Widow. He seemed kind of gaunt.. Great actor though.

@dracula - Hopefully he died feeling he lived a full life, Forget the MCU on that point.

I hope they retire his character peacefully.

@dracula - Yeah, I'm not expecting him to show up in She Hulk, but if he does it will be a bittersweet suprise.

RIP William.

Hope we see his cameo in She-Hulk.
So no Red-Hulk in MCU?
Wonder what was Feige's plans for Thunderbolts. Who is Valentina working for?

@deamon - could use a movie version of Glen Talbot, have him name the thunderbolts in his honor

@dracula - If Agents of SHIELD is properly canonized, Talbot is a no-go.
General Fortean and Ryker seems like plausible options, though.
