AVENGERS: ENDGAME - Kevin Feige's Initial Pitch Involved Killing ALL Six Original Team Members

We said goodbye to a couple of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Endgame, but if Kevin Feige had his way back when the story was being conceived, we may have bid farewell to all six!

Avengers: Endgame served as a conclusion to the Infinity Saga, while laying the groundwork for a new generation of heroes to shine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward. Some casualties were probably inevitable, and we ended up losing both Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) before the credits rolled, with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) taken out of play.

It was an emotional, bittersweet finale, for sure, but it sounds like things could have been much bleaker!

In new book, The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Endgame co-director Joe Russo reveals that Kevin Feige initially floated the idea of killing-off all six of the original team members. Though he doesn't go into much detail, it sound like the Marvel Studios boss may have even considered taking the heroes out in one fell swoop.

"Kevin's initial pitch was that it was Toy Story 3 - a 'they're all gonna jump into a furnace together' concept,' reveals Joe Russo. The brothers' pushback was that there was no possible way for the story to be able to take the time to celebrate each one of them. And that, for the fans, it was an impossible scenario to walk out of the theater and process."

We're not sure how much consideration was actually given to seeing this concept all the way through, but we're glad the Russos convinced Feige to see sense! While wiping out pretty much every main character in your movie is certainly a ballsy move, we can't imagine it would have gone down very well with the MCU faithful. Plus, it would have seriously limited Marvel Studios' options for Phase 4 and beyond (no Thor: Love and Thunder, no Hawkeye, etc).

What do you guys think? Could Feige's rather grim-sounding pitch for Avengers: Endgame have worked?

I usually give Feige the benefit of the doubt, but nah... Don't like his jdea hear. Killing off Iron Man, Black Widow and essentially Cap was enough.

Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye sticking around is cool

I’m not a great fan of Feige, yes he has pushed the MCU and without him it might not be where it is now but he does have some really wacko ideas…

Bad idea and very happy it didn't happen. But it was only a pitch and thankfully, Feige listens to the directors/writers and they all figure it out. Can't wait for The Russos to come back into the fold!

I need to buy this book, it's soooo interesting. The drama and heart in it behind the scenes is awesome.

The directors (or writers) joked about no action until the third act

I think I have seen this movie only 3 times it was very disappointing (to me)

@0bstreperous - if a movie is disappointing, I probably wouldn't even go for a second viewing. What makes you watch it twice if it disappoints you?

@bkmeijer - Hope some movies I have to see twice like Casino Royale grew on me as did Infinity war

@0bstreperous - Yeah okay I guess that makes sense. Only time I rewatched a disappointing movie was TLJ, but that was because I promised my friends and my dad seperately to go watch it with (suprisingly, it did grow in me too)

I imagine the conversation went something like this during the first pitch:

Feige: what if we killed off all the original Avengers

The Russos: nah, we can't give them all the spotlight

Feige: ok, then kill off Stark. I have plans for him in What If...

Well they still killed off 2 and retired one. That was a good mix along with some key deaths from Infinity War.

Well thank God Feige only hires yes-men to direct the movies or that would have happened. Wait ...

@Reeds2Much - Honestly lmao

It's been known tbh that he goes into discussions for movies and throws a lot of shit out there to debate. If this was Phase 1 kind of movies with Perlmutter or some shit, it would have happened.

I think the only way that works is if they all have to do it at once. Like if there’s a Guardians of the Galaxy scenario where they have to be together to do the third snap. If it was one by one I don’t think it would have worked because after a couple it would have felt forced

Iron-Man, Captain America and Black Widow is enough.

Everyone? No, that's a hard no on my part. I get why he would come to that conclusion and given contract expirations of various castmembers I get where he's coming from BUT there is no way the general audience could stomach losing every single one of their original heroes in one sitting.
I'm fully expecting Thor to either die or turn human in Love & Thunder and Hawkeye to go full deaf in his solo show rendering him practically retired though.
As for Hulk, I suppose the World War Hulk film will be his swan-song.
I was at least hoping for Thor to stay present until the day Chris dies but given that he has become one of the most bankable movie stars in the world it'll be hard to keep him as well.

On a marketing note I can't encourage enough to find ways to reincorporate the original Avengers in the MCU until the very end. Franchises tend to die with it's original leads, so here are some proposals from my side:

- get RDJ on the Volume for three days and have him pre-shoot literally the entire Phase 4 slate as T.O.N.Y., an AI for Ironhearts armour to lead and educate her. Turn him into Paul Bettany and give fans the incentive to return to the franchise and accept the "new" characters.

- similar scenario goes for Chris Evans, put him into Old Man Steve get up, pre-shoot a bunch of scenes with him as the leader of S.W.O.R.D. and sprinkle these scenes across Phase 4/5 until he properly dies of old age.

- Thor turning human and re-taking his place as the leader of New Asgaard gives ample opportunity to bring Thor back as a character to seek out for guidance and help Hemsworth with his physique. If he can't work out for whatever reason he simply got skinnier because he's now human and aged. Sprinkle him across the movies as a mentor figure.

- the same can be done with a deaf Hawkeye, who might not be able to fight anymore but bestow relevant guidance on the younger and more inexperienced characters.

I know, it's nostalgia baiting but nostalgia is a HEAVY factor in todays film industry. Marvel shouldn't pass the chance up to find excuses to bring back beloved characters and gain some more viewers by maintaining a sense of cast-consistency.

I wouldn’t mind this as it would have made Endgame feel even more like an end of an era.. but the Russo’s are right. Endgame wouldn’t have executed it right unless they split Endgame into a two part film and reaaaaally stretched out the story.
