AVENGERS: ENDGAME Actor Frank Grillo Admits He Was An "A**hole" For Initially Turning Down Crossbones Return

Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Frank Grillo has reflected on his decision to initially turn down a cameo role in Avengers: Endgame, revealing the moment that left him feeling like an "a**hole."

It's often hard to find fault with Marvel Studios, but it would be ridiculous to say they haven't made some mistakes over the years. Whether it's Mac Gargan's forgotten origin story in Spider-Man: Homecoming or Crossbones' sudden demise in Captain America: Civil War's opening battle, there are some creative decisions it's still hard to understand.

Frank Grillo has previously explained his disappointment with Brock Rumlow's story arc, especially after he signed a seven-picture deal that would only end up lasting three movies.

Asked to return for Avengers: Endgame, the actor initially hung up on Marvel Studios and decided he wanted nothing more to do with them. However, Grillo soon saw sense and returned for a memorable cameo role that inserted Rumlow into the events of The Avengers

Talking to Empire (via The Direct), he opened up on his MCU story arc and why he initially turned down a return.

"There was supposed to be a lot more of Crossbones," Grillo explains. "I was the one character who I think should be in more of them, and these other idiot characters are still there. I was being an asshole, being a bit petulant."

"[My son] said, ‘This is going to be the biggest movie in the world,’ and he was right. And I had a beautiful time," he adds. "They did the ten-year anniversary, Stan Lee was there, and I stood and went "What an asshole I am!'"

With Sam Wilson responsible for Crossbones' injuries, it's a real missed opportunity for him to not still be around. After all, he'd make the perfect foe for the MCU's new Captain America, but his explosive demise in Civil War was definitive, and the door on any sort of resurrection has likely closed.

On the plus side, we are pleased to hear that Grillo has no regrets about making one final MCU appearance in Avengers: Endgame, especially as it helped further cement his character's importance to this shared world.

Do you guys think Marvel Studios dropped the ball with Crossbones?

Wish they left him alive. He could have been on the Thunderbolts team. Crossbones is my favorite henchman in the comics.

@TheBlueMorpho - Not really impossible IMO. He could still be "alive" and is just even more burned to a crisp

Hey, if they bring him back and just say "he survived somehow" I'll totally be ok with it.

When Crossbones was on the Thunderbolts when Luke Cage was leading the team it was pretty interesting.

Sounds like he still is being one.

Minor character. Nobody cares.

I would have preferred had they left him alive, but it's not as if his death was meaningless. It was one of the more influential demises in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

@BackwardGalaxy - No kidding. Never mind what it ultimately led to as far as Wanda goes, the effects that event had on the MCU world are still in active play.

After Kingdom he needs to do more movies like Boss Level and less of those direct to DVD movies he keeps starring in.

@SimplyAz - he's producing a lot of these direct to DVD films though to build up his company. I think he's in for the grind right now so he has the capital to make his own bigger projects in 5-10 years.

@Blergh - cool didn't know he was producing them.

He's 57, albeit in amazing shape, would love to see him with his own action swries

He was right the first time. Marvel misled him as they have others. He should've ignored them.
FireandBlood

@PartyKiller - They didn’t mislead him, they signed him on for 7 potential movies. He starred in 3, he got to become Crossbones, and his characters death played an important part that lead to major repercussions in the MCU. I don’t think at any point Marvel made him believe he was the next Loki.
PartyKiller
PartyKiller - 12/29/2022, 12:06 PM
@PlusUltra - He never said he thought he was going to be Loki. But they did make him think his character was going to have more story. Which is why he got pissed when his character had nothing.

There are tons of one liners in these films. Sometimes they are clever. And sometimes they are cringe. But my favorite response is Sam Wilson simply saying to Crossbones...

"Man, shut the hell up!"

It wasn't clever, it wasn't really a response you would see in a movie like that. It seemed like something a regular person would say to someone dialoguing about being a badass. It always makes me chuckle

shame they wasted him on this nothing character. Should've used him as Punisher for a movie

I liked Crossbones. His appearances are memorable because he was in some of the best MCU movies.

But yeah that comment about there still being “stupid characters” after his death is just arrogant and still makes him an a-hole.
He wasn’t the main character, and nowhere near as important.

Only because he signed a contract it doesn’t mean these stories can’t change and evolve, and if you’re a supporting character, nothing is guaranteed, sometimes not even for the main characters! Like we’ve seen with Cavill and Batffleck.

I think actors should be more grateful and humble, it’s always the long game that gets them where they want to be.

I'm not familiar with the comic book version of the character, but in the MCU, he gave off henchmen energy. I didn't see any reason why he needed to stick around. The movies aren't like the comics. You gotta allow for some villains to be permanently defeated, so you can move on to other characters.

NoAssemblyReqd - 12/29/2022, 11:12 AM
I understood his frustration on the arc of his character, but he didn’t need to be such a jerk about it. He was lucky to get the callback for Endgame. Glad he finally understood why you should not burn your bridges with Marvel, especially now that time travel and the multiverse are in play.

Unfortunately, with movies, there is only so much time you can devote to every villain, and so whatever antics Crossbones was up to before his first act Civil War death happened off-screen. If Disney+ had been around back then, for sure we’d have seen Rumlow as a recurring villain.

Crossbones would be so much more interesting as a Thunderbolt than half the roster they're planning.
