AVENGERS: ENDGAME Digital Artist Reveals Gruesome Alternate Versions Of Iron Man's Post-Snap Death

Digital artwork from Avengers: Endgame showcases alternate takes on Iron Man's shocking demise in the 2019 movie, and some of these are undeniably difficult to look at. Check them out after the jump...

While there's a great deal of excitement for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, both movies will need to do an awful lot if they hope to replicate the sort of thrills and surprises we got in 2019's Avengers: Endgame

Despite Secret Wars being a dream project for the Russo Brothers, the filmmakers aren't expected to return to the MCU for the movie. Instead, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton is in charge of The Kang Dynasty, with Sam Raimi rumoured to be Marvel Studios' top pick for Secret Wars

Looking back at Endgame, though, and the death of Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man still stings.

Weta Digital's Aaron Black recently shared some alternate takes on the hero's final moments, and if you thought what we saw in the movie was hard to watch, these are arguably even more difficult to look at.

"Concepts for the damage to Tony Stark from the exploding Infinity Gauntlet," the artist explains. "Obviously such a beloved character's death scene was top secret and needed to be treated with sensitivity. Tony needed to have suffered damage severe enough for it to be clear that he wouldn't survive, but it couldn't be too gruesome or obscure the actor's performance."

While Downey appears to have moved on from the MCU, rumours continue to persist he'll return as a Variant in one of the upcoming Avengers movies.

Talking about Iron Man's heroic sacrifice, Joe Russo previously said, "If you think of Captain America as a character, you go 'Okay, Captain America dying is fairly obvious,' right? [Self-sacrifice] is something he would do. This is a guy who offered to be a guinea pig in a science experiment in order to be able to go fight Nazis in the war. He's intrinsically a hero."

"There's not a lot of complexity there. It might be emotionally impactful because you like him. He's a very likeable character, but it’s not necessarily the most compelling arc," the filmmaker added. "Tony Stark is a character who was supposed to die. So that seemed like the more compelling arc to us, that it would be Stark who died. So that it would be a richer, more complex arc, and that’s why we chose him."

Talking of Steve Rogers, we still don't know what became of him after Avengers: Endgame. Last seen as an old man, it's been strongly hinted that he's passed away, and we're hoping his fate will be made clear in next year's Captain America: Brave New World

Check out this newly revealed Avengers: Endgame artwork below.

@bobevanz - "Thanos has a retirement plan" is the shittiest line in the movie. Thanks Skrull Rhodey

The very digitally looking scarring kinda took me out of the moment. I get they don't want it to be gruesome, but it wasn't very realistic looking either.

Anyway, Stark duing as part of a self-sacrifice is the same to me as with Cap. Stark flew into the portal in A1 and blowing up the flying city in AoU, knowing both times there was a chance he wasn't coming back. Pretty selfless as well

I lowkey wish they brought Thanos in after Doom, lots of character interactions we dont get to see RDJ have, was the main hype of the MCU in the first place imo. None of these new leads do it for me honestly. I feel Doom should have met Ironman and Cap america 🤷🏽‍♂️ They blew their load too soon now it shows they making it up as they go with the Rick & Morty writers. No game plan like they were acting, sort of false advertising imo

@Matchesz - its like we had the perfect timeline and they just said how can we f this up?

@Matchesz - It's as if they didnt have the rights to certain characters because Fox owned them at the time they started planning out the first Avengers movie...

@Matchesz - That's just the thing. A lot of what these movies need, especially in a shared universe context, is at least one character that basically anchors a lot of the audience interest. This is difficult too because it doesn't always line up with "muh comics" which fanboys will treat like the gospel despite this being a new telling rather than a literal translation.

The X-Men movies? Could you argue that Wolverine was over-exposed in those movies? Sure. BUT those movies nosedive the moment Jackman leaves, even with major talent like Fassbender and McAvoy running the show. And none of the general audience would give a shit about any of those characters appearing in the MCU the same way they would Jackman. And as bad as Wolverine Origins is? Gun to my head, I'm watching that before Dark Phoenix, Apocalypse or New Mutants.

Same goes for the MCU. They killed RDJ, and love it or hate it, argue that Tony Stark was over-played, but since he's died? Does anyone really even care about these characters crossing over? Even as late as Infinity War/Endgame part of the appeal was still going to be Iron Man interacting with the likes of the Guardians or Doctor Strange. That doesn't exist anymore. And the movies are all now so visually and tonally samey that it doesn't seem interesting or unique to see them crossover.

It's not even that the other cast is bad. X-Men had a lot of great characters and actors in the supporting roles, so did the Avengers. You can root for Cap, Thor and Banner, but they don't draw a crowd or capture the screen the same way as Tony Stark.

Genuinely, above all else, I think this is what sunk the DCEU as well. The closest they ever got was Wonder Woman. Nobody else in that series was done well enough to sort of become the anchor point of that series. Maybe could've worked if they'd gotten Bale back because the audiences loved him and his series, but they never reached it themselves in those movies. They never had their RDJ or their Jackman.

Now do the article about how Disney/Marvel paid $1.8 Billion for the production of Infinity War and Endgame when they said they only paid $300-$400 per movie....which means they actually earned a TON less than they originally reported.

But this site won't touch that because it requires actual journalism.

@AllsGood -

"Avengers: Endgame or Infinity War, each of those movies was $500 million plus. So this is an incredible amount of money that is being spent on these films." - Joe Russo.

$1.3 Billion production, $500 Million marketing for both films. $1.8 Billion total production and marketing.

This was found in the British tax returns.

WhatIfRickJames - 9/7/2023, 12:50 PM
@TyrantBossMedia - ok, I’m not sure why this is so scandalous. The Forbes article reported that both films made $1,2 billion in net profit. That’s still a very healthy profit margin all things considered
TyrantBossMedia
TyrantBossMedia - 9/7/2023, 12:54 PM
@WhatIfRickJames - Even that may not be accurate.

Too bad the Hulk wasn't closer he could have done both SNAPS and Survived. The Hulk was the only one that could do the SNAP and Restore 50% of the Universe and live.

SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 9/7/2023, 12:04 PM
@AllsGood - I think Thor could have done the final snap. All he needed to do was wipe out Thanos' army.

Obviously it's more impactful and poetic for Tony to do it. But from a practicality perspective, Thor could have handled it and lived, and it would have brought his arc full circle from the moment he didn't "aim for the head".
AllsGood
AllsGood - 9/7/2023, 12:14 PM
@SheepishOne - Both Thor and Captain Marvel have one big weakness they both can be killed and no healing powers. The Hulk can't die and has healing powers which no other MCU character has.
