AVENGERS: ENDGAME Directors Defend Streaming And Explain Why Going To The Theater Has Become "Elitist"

The Gray Man directors Joe and Anthony Russo have shared their take on why streaming is incredibly important for movies, especially at a time when theaters aren't accessible to everyone. Check it out...

Even before COVID, there was a shift in how people watch movies. While some filmmakers can't stomach the thought of people watching their work on a TV, tablet, or phone, that's the way things are going thanks to the rise of countless streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video.

Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are no strangers to box office success, as the Infinity Saga finale was the biggest theatrical release of all time (before Avatar was re-released).

The duo helmed Cherry for Apple TV+ and are currently doing the rounds to promote the most expensive Netflix blockbuster ever made, The Gray Man. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Joe and Anthony shared their thoughts on how the theatrical landscape has changed post-pandemic and why they're not among those who view theaters as the be-all and end-all of the moviegoing experience.

"We love everything about classic cinema, but we’ve never been precious about that in any way, shape, or form," Anthony tells the trade. "What has always excited us most is [the question], how do you move it forward? This is part of our philosophy in terms of not being precious about theatrical distribution."

Joe would go on to point out that Extraction being viewed on Netflix 100 million times is equivalent to a $2 billion box office haul, and dismissed the notion of "auteur filmmaking."

"Auteur filmmaking is 50 years old at this point. It was conceived in the ’70s. We grew up on that. We were kids, it was really important to us. But we’re also aware that the world needs to change and the more that we try to prevent it from changing the more chaos we create," the director says. "It’s not anyone’s place to reject the next generation’s ideas."

"A thing to remember, too, is it’s an elitist notion to be able to go to a theater. It’s very f***ing expensive," Joe adds. "So, this idea that was created - that we hang on to - that the theater is a sacred space, is bullshit."

Not everyone will agree with these comments, but nothing Joe and Anthony say here is incorrect. The average price for a single movie ticket is nearly the same as a monthly subscription to Netflix, so it's no wonder families are looking to stay at home to watch the latest releases.

Yes, seeing a blockbuster on the big screen is a special experience in a lot of ways, but as the pandemic proved, it's not the only way to watch movies like Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow.

It is far too expensive to go to the movies these days.

If me, my wife, and my daughter go we're spending close to $100. $60 in tickets. Almost $20 in drinks. And then if we want a snack, that can add anywhere from $6-$20.

It's just stupid how over priced it is.

During Covid a lot of people here were saying we need to preserve theatres and start going back. But I ask why? Why do we need preserve them? If they can't operate at an affordable price for most families to be able to go, then why do we need them?

@CorndogBurglar - damn, where do you go to the movies? for me, my girlfriend and both my sons, it costs $40 in tickets.
as far as drinks, yea, a small drink is $5.60, so, I always just put stuff in my backpack (drinks and snacks), no way am I paying theatre prices for food....maybe a hotdog

@CorndogBurglar - agreed. also the hassle of getting everyone in the car, getting there a little earlier to get good seats, waiting to get the kids pop corn and drinks, previews. i lived in the movie theaters as a teenager and in my 20's. But back then we also didn't have 65"-75" TVs that have 4K resolution. I'm more than glad to sit on my couch (with a beer) with my family and watch the movie at home. Sure, I still go to the theater but at this point in my life i don't like getting home at 11:30 at night on a Thursday because I went to see a movie with friends.

@CorndogBurglar - wow where you live ny tickets cost for three people where live under 40 maybe 30

@DarkeyeZ - AMC Theatres. I live near Tampa in Florida. Tickets are $17 a piece, plus tax.

But, it's also kind of funny because even you who is saying it's not too expensive, are cheating the system because of the price.

Not that I blame you one single bit.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - Yep. I used to love going to the movies. But started feeling more like a chore. And then the price on top of it? I'd rather spend $20 and watch it at home.

@DarkeyeZ - the thing about what you're doing is... you aren't preserving the theaters. Not even saying you have to but theaters make most of their money from concessions

@CorndogBurglar - I recommend if you have a Cinemark, using them and going to the first viewing of a movie on a Saturday. We went and saw Thor yesterday. $7.25 tickets.

thewanderer - 7/18/2022, 10:21 AM
@DarkeyeZ - even $40 can be a lot depending on where you are. We see early showings, can get 4 tickets for $30 or so.

CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/18/2022, 10:25 AM
@Battabing - Yeah, so then it's only $80. Keep in mind, it's not even an affordability issue for me. I can take us to any movies we want. But the price is just silly and there's no way to justify it.

@DarkeyeZ - I was thinking that. It’s like £5 for a ticket here. It’s hardly expensive. The real issue is getting there as I live in Cornwall and I have to travel for a few hours to get to the nearest cinema.

@CorndogBurglar -

I don't know where you live but
if I go to the movies on the weekends it's about $12 a ticket, 1 large popcorn & soda is about $15 both, while I get the recliner seats, seats already selected in the app way before I head to the theater and Deluxe theater.
if I want to save some more when I got with a bunch of friends, tickets are $6 dollars on tuesdays, any movie, any time,
so
it all depends which theater you go,
I guess ...
.

However, being a lazy sh!t, I still drive!😜

An elitist notion to be able to go to a theater? That’s a bit extreme. I still think the theater will always be the best place to experience a movie. I know not everyone likes going to the cinema, but it’s far from elitist to want to see a movie in a cinema.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/18/2022, 7:55 AM
@bcom - They are saying the price makes it elitist. Because not everyone can afford to go these days.
Blahsketcase94
Blahsketcase94 - 7/18/2022, 8:16 AM
@bcom - it's elitist because of the price. For a family to go to the movies will easily set them back 100$ or more.
Battabing
Battabing - 7/18/2022, 10:28 AM
@CorndogBurglar - Not being able to afford a luxury has always been the case, regardless of the activity. That doesn't make it elitist. Middle-class people still make up the majority of audiences that attend these events.
bobevanz
bobevanz - 7/18/2022, 7:53 AM
It's like going to a sports event or a concert, people pay for the experience. You can't get that while sitting on your couch 🤷‍♂️
DarkeyeZ
DarkeyeZ - 7/18/2022, 8:11 AM
@bobevanz - the theatre experience isn't worth the money. lineups, the possibility of someone talking or coughing, causing you to miss something. or people laughing so hard at a funny scene that you miss the next minute or 2 of dialog. missing part of the movie if you need to use the washroom.
Watching movies at home is way better than the theatre. plus, my 4K Ultra HD TV looks better.
Blahsketcase94
Blahsketcase94 - 7/18/2022, 8:16 AM
@bobevanz - At that point, it depends on how much that experience is worth to you because they're right in that theatres have become [frick]ing expensive.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 7/18/2022, 9:24 AM

CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/18/2022, 8:07 AM
@Supercat6376 - It doesn't mean the people going have the mindset that they are elitist. Just that the simple fact that the price makes it so not everyone can go. Elitist may not he the best word, honestly. But that's what they are saying.
Supercat6376
Supercat6376 - 7/18/2022, 8:15 AM

The same way a Ferrari and a Honda. Both will get you to places, and frankly Honda will do it better, only that Honda is a a small fraction of the cost of a Ferrari.

Feige about to call them up for this one. That guy loves the cinema.

For me I agree with them. The older I get, and particularly during covid, I have learned to like home-viewing these movies more than a trip to the cinema. If you have a good setup at home then it's more comfortable and of course cheaper.

In the age of a thousand streaming services, and in particular for this audience D+, it's not a crazy idea to just wait a couple of months and enjoy these movies from the comfort of your own home.
