AVENGERS: ENDGAME Star Chris Evans Explains Captain America's "Avengers Assemble!" Line Delivery

Captain America saying "Avengers Assemble!" in 2019's Avengers: Endgame is without a doubt one of the MCU's most iconic moments, and Chris Evans has now explained his approach to reeling off that line...

Chris Evans spent a long time playing Captain America in the MCU, but it wasn't until his final movie, Avengers: Endgame, that we finally got to hear him say, "Avengers Assemble!" It was a chill-induing moment, but many fans have questioned over the years why the actor delivered that iconic line in such an understated way.

Doing the rounds to promote Lightyear, Evans was asked why his Captain America didn't shout that battle cry the same way as the character's comic book counterpart.

"It almost feels like it should be shouted," the actor acknowledges in the video below. "I was going to shout the first take, and then it just felt like I knew what the camera was doing. You know that people are waiting for it. And it almost felt like a nice juxtaposition to go underneath it and then have everyone around me scream. And we tried that the first take, and then the Russos just said, 'That's it, don't even do the screaming one.'

"And I actually don’t know if we ever even tried it... I obviously tried it at my home the night before. And again, it could have worked," Evans continued. "I like the fact that you almost have to lean in."

Praising Chris Hemsworth for the "primal roar" Thor lets out moments later, the former Captain America said he believes it would have "been strange if I had screamed, and everyone screamed," adding that "it almost felt better being more steely." We can't disagree, as the scene remains one of the MCU's most iconic and memorable.

Elsewhere in the interview, Evans was asked how saying "Avengers Assemble!" compares to Lightyear's iconic "To Infinity...And Beyond!" line. "Well, certainly [Lightyear] felt a little more intimidating," he admits. "At least with 'Avengers, assemble,' no one had done it before. With this one, you know that someone else has kind of put their stamp on it. It’s an iconic line because someone else made it iconic. So I was honoured to say this line. You get goosebumps every time you do it."

It's a lot of fun hearing from the MCU alum as he continues to look back at his time as Steve Rogers. While there have been rumblings he might reprise the role, the focus will be shifted to Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson in Captain America 4 and, if we do see Evans again, it probably won't be until Secret Wars rolls around however many years from now.

Lightyear is now playing in theaters.

This moment on opening night is burned into my eyes and ears, the audience roar was something magical. That is why theaters will never die.

There’s one line delivery that’s always always always bothered me. I remember seeing the trailer for the first Avengers and how RDJ originally said the “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” line and the way he said it was perfect with this perfect witt, almost like he had to give some thought to it and improvise it. The line delivery we got in the movie came off like he was already locked and loaded with the comment and it still doesn’t sound as good.

@Brand0n - With all due respect, let it go man. You can still watch and appreciate the trailer.

@Brand0n - that's fair, but they probably chose the take they used in the movie because within the wider context of the scene it made more sense for the line to be delivered in a less witty/snarky and more directly confrontational way, seeing as the team were all arguing while being negatively influenced by the Mind Stone, whereas the one used in the trailers is just there to give people (who may not have seen the Iron Man movies beforehand) a sense of who Tony Stark is as a character in a more appealing and endearing way.

@Brand0n - I agree! I always preferred the trailer version.

@Brand0n - I agree with you. The trailer delivery on Satrk’s line worked better to me.
And Evans just saying “Assemble” in the movie I thought….now how did everybody hear him?
Oh? They had the script that’s how.

It’s also like that Indiana Jones line in Crystal Skull.
Mutt asks him, “You’re a teacher” and he says “part time”.
And the delivery of the line in the trailer was SO much better than the one used in the movie.

I don’t know why these decisions are made.

This is the difference between you and the people making these decisions:

@BO31 - Slick, Obviously you are all about Marvel vs DC, but I have no horse in this race. When it comes to movies they all deserve criticism when they screw up.

DC has screwed up more but Marvel is far from flawless.

Let it go sport.

One of the most iconic moments in the history of film🔥🔥🔥 I get chills every time watch these😥

In complete awe what Marvel has accomplished with the Avengers. Nothing but the heightest of praise is warrented!!

SpaceParanoids - 6/21/2022, 8:34 AM
@BO31 - In history???

In over 100 years THAT is one of the most iconic?

History of movies started long before you were born.
This moment isn’t even in the top 50.
DCasAhobby
DCasAhobby - 6/21/2022, 8:53 AM
@SpaceParanoids - it is.

Relax bro. DC will be fine. I see them getting their shit together. It's ok to give Marvel the respect they deserve. Their success doen't hurt DC in any way

@BO31 - DC is a hot mess. This isn’t Marvel vs DC. This is about movie history.

Give me time and I can list at least 50 more iconic moments than Captain America whispering “assemble”
CasualAF
CasualAF - 6/21/2022, 9:21 AM
@SpaceParanoids - Fine. calling your bluff. Take all the time you want and find 50 moments, wait... 10 moments more iconic than that moment. Find 10 moments that made EVERYONE in EVERY theater cheer as loud as they did. Find 10 that were a culmination of 23 movies of a universe unmatched in scale that are STILL talked about. The fact you couldnt even name one just then proves a point. I get that being argumentative is cool these days but you are just flat out wrong. 10 examples. GO.
SpaceParanoids
SpaceParanoids - 6/21/2022, 9:35 AM
@CasualAF - Cute. You want a list but you want to qualify every aspect of the list to apply to your own direct specifications that are relegated only to the MCU.

Nice try guy I reiterate….Cap whispering “Assemble” is not even in the top 50. Not even close.

I’ll just start off the top of my head with a few that are far more iconic:

- Luke blowing up the Death Star
- Indiana Jones running from the rolling boulder in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
- Jaws appearing folllowed by “you’re gonna need a bigger boat”
- the opening battle of Saving Private Ryan
- Michael Corleone shooting McKluskey and Sollozzo in the restaurant.
- The baptism montage at the end of The Godfather
- the transformation scene in American Werewolf in London
- Schwarzenegger “I’ll be back” from the first Terminator
- “What’s in the box” scene from Se7en
- Rocky raising his fists on the steps of the Art Museum in the first Rocky.
- “You can’t handle the truth” from A few Good Men
- The first mission impossible wired theft scene in the CIA
- Christopher Reeves flying into space sound earth ath the end of Superman (1978)
- Empire Strikes Back “I am your father”
- “Frankly my dear I don’t give a damn” fromGone with the wind

That’s 15 just off the top of my head and I haven’t even really touched the old classics of which there hundreds.

I may have to say Cap whispering “assemble” may not even be in the top 75.

@SpaceParanoids - the second i started reading your list you confirmed what a clown you are.

Complete idiot upset over Marvel's success. Sorry about DC mate

SpaceParanoids - 6/21/2022, 11:16 AM
@BO31 - Got it. Can’t counter my argument with logic so resort to name calling and the typical DC Fanboy accusations.

That’s okay buddy. There’s more to movies beyond Marvel.
You’ll be okay.
DCasAhobby
DCasAhobby - 6/21/2022, 11:23 AM
@SpaceParanoids - nope your obviously a complete idiot troll.

No point in humouring you.

What Marvel has accomplished is such an anaomly all the haters can do is hate. It's to good to be true. A total fanboy dream with soul even.
SpaceParanoids
SpaceParanoids - 6/21/2022, 11:27 AM
@BO31 - Nobody is questioning what they have accomplished. However Cap whispering “assemble” is not even in the top 75 most iconic scenes in movie history.

Hell, the first panning team shot in The Avengers was far more iconic than that.

But keep on name calling. You aren’t helping your argument, but maybe it makes you feel better.
