AVENGERS: ENDGAME Star Chris Evans Explains Why Marvel Studios Movies Deserve More Award Recognition

It's rare that any comic book movie receives serious awards recognition, and while that has changed somewhat in recent years with Black Panther and Joker, Chris Evans now makes a case for Marvel Studios...

When The Dark Knight was released in 2008, the hope was that major award ceremonies like the Oscars would start recognising blockbuster movies. The promise of expanding the "Best Picture" category to include them ultimately came to naught, while the notion of a "Popular" film category was widely ridiculed and led to the Academy scrapping the idea.

As a result, superhero movies have been largely ignored, though the R-Rated Joker did get some attention earlier this year, while Black Panther received a "Best Picture" nod in 2019.

Despite that, it still feels like the genre is widely dismissed, and when Chris Evans talked to Deadline about his Apple TV+ series Defending Jacob, he made a case for why Marvel Studios movies like Avengers: Endgame deserve to be taken more seriously when award season rolls around.

"There is enormous thought and consideration that goes into these story arcs," the actor explained. "If you take the Marvel moniker off those movies, and characters that aren’t identifiable from comic books these movies would be lauded in that way. I’m not saying every one’s a home run. But they really turn out some really impressive movies."

It's a fair point, and the fact that a movie like Avengers: Endgame can come out, receive widespread critical acclaim, become the highest-grossing release of all-time, but not be recognised at the Oscars, is crazy. Whether things will change moving forward remains to be seen.

What do you guys think?

The only MCU movie that deserves any awards recognition is The Winter Soldier. The rest are just generic trash.

But, ugh, it's not... "Oscar worthy"

True, the fact that they are comic books does kind of make these award people look down on them and the movies are most of the time great, but at most id say 1 or 2 could be a major award winner, but of the major awards, best picture is not one of them

CBMs are to much of a rinse repeat formula to win anything.

@billnye69 - well there was joker, didnt win best picture, but it did win a few and was nominated at pretty much every award show

@dracula - Joker was not a cbm in the sense most cbms are. It wasn't an action driven, four quadrant blockbuster.

@WakandanQueen - true, really if Marvel and DC want more success like that, they are going to have to take more chances. With DC possibly doing more like The Joker, hopefully they really do something different again and don't try to repeat the formula that worked in joker

@dracula - Or maybe the Academy should start nominating more types of films? Look at how many great horror films and performances are left out.

@WakandanQueen - i guess, but thinking about it, can you honestly say there has been one that truly is good enough to stand with The Godfather, Rocky and The Lord Of The Rings, more than a few have come close, dark knight, joker, black panther, but its a very high standard

@dracula - This argument makes no sense. They are not competing with these films. Into the Spider-Verse was better than any of that year's nominees and it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture.

@WakandanQueen - well animated movies dont get nominated for best picture, they have their own category

@dracula - They actually can and have, but the fact that there is a separate category says a lot about the Academy

As far as the MCU, I'm hard-pressed to pick any one movie to nominate a performance for best or supporting roles. Overall arcs over the span of films I could more easily see. And as far as Best Picture material, I personally don't see any of them quite up there (though I'll sooner watch the MCU films over many to most Best Picture winners on a given day.

@MosquitoFarmer - Michel B. Jordan definitely deserved one for Killmonger. Easily the best live-action comic book movie villain to date and the performance was amazing.

@MosquitoFarmer - People say Andy Serkis deserved recognition for Cesar (which I 100% agree with), then I nominated Brolin's performance as Thanos in Infinity War. He was amazing!

I also agree with @FinnishDude MBJ's Killmonger was the driving force of Best Picture nominee Black Panther, he deserved best supporting nom 100%.

RDJ should get one for acting white, cuz I’m pretty sure... HE IS.

@Gmoney84 - not... quite sure, to be honest. I feel like I HAD a point, but... oh yeah, now I remember. Man that part makes me cringe every time I watch it. I could’ve just said that🤷🏾‍♂️
