In the following discussion, I will use comparisons of the previous major films, and I will see if all the facts can lead to The Avengers receiving an Oscar Nomination for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Writing (Original Screenplay), Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects.
Best Picture
Ok, I’ll get right to the point… For those who have seen The Avengers, the likely hood of this happening is slim to none, since most if not all CBM’s have never been nominated for an award, yet receive one. So, even if the reviews from both the public/critics do show potential, and it does break Box Office records, the likely hood of it happening is far from it. Since we have yet to see the rest of this upcoming Summer blockbuster movies.
Plain and simple, The Oscar Judges decided that while a movie can do really great, and succeed financially, they just don’t consider that Comic Book Movies let alone anything Sci-Fi like Avatar, or Star Wars deserves the rewards of an Oscar.
Results: Not Good
Best Director
What I said in the above for my opinion on Best Picture, is the simply the same for Best Director. While Joss Whedon has made a tremendous achievement in making The Avengers successful, I doubt that the judges will view this the same way. Reasons? First, there has only been one director in the past decade that has gotten nominated for such a big hit.
That was James Cameron for his movie Avatar, and while he deserved if for having such a visual epic title, he was turned down the reward to a film that shows bomb technicians serving in Iraq. While The Hurt Locker was a good movie, it didn’t get the same feelings or attention that Avatar received.
So plane and simple…
Results: Not Good
Best Actor/Actress
If one of the major actors or actresses from The Avengers does get picked… it will probably be Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson), since the main 5 (Thor- Chris Hemsworth, Cap-Chris Evans, Iron Man- Robert Downy Jr. ,Hulk- Mark Ruffalo, Loki- Tom Hiddleston) do their jobs perfectly, that picking one out of the five will be hard enough for fans to accept. Since choosing one character will anger fans of another.
But what about the actresses? I would say that if The Avengers is nominated, than Scarlett Johansson would be the one who is picked for playing The Black Widow. Since she has made a tremendous effort in the past when staring in Iron Man 2, and for playing a main character in the Avengers team.

Best Supporting Actor/Actress
Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) VS Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is the competition for Best Supporting Actor if The Avengers gets a nomination. Why? Both are very deserving for their hard work in previous marvel films, and are the only two characters that fit the “Supporting Actor” role.
However, for Best Supporting Actress, I would say that Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) or Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) will be the best for the film. Though both play small roles, and are the only two major supporting actresses in the film, their roles are small, yet important when paired with the team.

Best Writing (Original Screenplay)
Looking at how The Avengers was written in terms of story, this may be the only category that is announced as an Oscar Nominee. Why? There has never been this many main characters in a CBM film, each having their own moment, and yet being part of a team that has a complete storyline of its own.
So who would get the credit for Best Original Screenplay? It will be a battle of sorts between Zak Penn, and Joss Whedon, since both had major contributing factors to the story’s success. Though I am rooting for Joss, I’m not holding my breath, so neither should you.

Best Film Editing
This category has a slim chance of having The Avengers being announced in it, yet, it could very well happen, since the film was shown at a pace that was at a medium speed, and the story was overall shown.
So chances of it happening? – Good
Best Visual Effects
Now to the nitty gritty subject. Without the aliens invading, and the special visual effects of the film, there would be no Avengers film. Plain and simple. With The Dark Knight and Iron Man getting nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards in 2009, the chances of The Avengers getting nominated is very high.
Take the above with a grain of salt, since this is just theories of what could happen. We’ll just have to wait until all the movies this year are shown, before we can truly tell if The Avengers will at least get nominated. But in the meantime if The Avengers did get nominated… Which one would you want it to be nominated for?
