These May Be The Next Two DC Comics Movies To Go Into Production

Despite chatter about Suicide Squad 2 shooting in 2018, a new report claims that two other DC Comics adaptations may, in fact, be next to move into production and you may be surprised by which ones!

Earlier today, we told you about Patty Jenkins not currently being signed on to direct a Wonder Woman sequel and The Hollywood Reporter has now shed some light on Warner Bros.' lack of forward thinking. It seems the studios was indeed pretty shocked by the movie's success and they've actually been focusing on two other DC Comics adaptations rather than a continuation of this new franchise.

Those are Justice League Dark and Batgirl and the trade
adds that these are "the likely next movies to go into production in the DC Comics universe." This is obviously surprising for a number of reasons.

For starters, it appears as if the studio really has gone back to the drawing board with The Flash as that coming our way in 2018 is now damn near impossible, while there's also no mention of Gotham City Sirens, Suicide Squad 2, and The Batman, three movies most of us expected to be with us in 2019.

Still, Justice League Dark is long overdue and Batgirl coming sooner rather than later is no bad thing. However, now that Joss Whedon has taken charge of Justice League, you have to believe that could be delayed. We'll just have to wait and see, but a nice Comic-Con gift would be a full DC Films slate!

@MexicanSexyman wants a Kamandi film.

He's also a member of NAMBLA.

...I don't know if those two things are related.

Well, Whedon will be tied down with Justice League until after it's release.

Justice League Dark did have the recent attempt to have a law suit against Universal - so maybe they are pushing forward with that in order to cement the law suit.

Neither film should be what is made next though. The Batman movie should have priority followed by the previously announced Flash (originally 2019) and Green Lantern movie (originally 2020)

@Scarilian - Exactly. Core JL members before obscure properties like JLD and Batgirl.

@Elayem - How is Batgirl obscure? She's more known than every member of the GLC except Hal Jordan (and even then, that might be questionable). I also bet more people know of her than Cyborg.

@GAThrawnIGF - She's obscure compared to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Green Lantern, all of whom are more deserving of a solo movie before Batgirl, (IMO).
Batgirl's definitely more well known than Cyborg, I agree, but I don't really think of him as a JL member because I'm old school and think of him as a Titan.

I love the comments, "GOD DAMMIT, I NEED TO KNOW THE DEFINITIVE SCHEDULE"

I mean, come on Warner Bros. It's important that I know now for the sake of my hype levels.

If I don't know what's tentatively happening in 2020, how will I cope?

@nibs -

It's less tentatively knowing and more they actually announced plans for movies on set years and a majority will not make those release dates.

Alternatively in the case of about 15+ movies, they have announced them without any hint towards a timeline of release essentially making the announcement meaningless and making it seem like they do not actually have a structure or goal (which is actually accurate given they have not got an over-arcing plan for their Extended Universe) other than Justice League.

@nibs - But don't the release dates kind of tell you the direction they're taking the DCEU as a whole? A JL Dark and Batgirl movie before a Flash or GL movie definitely tells me where their priorities are at, and where they MAY be taking their upcoming JL and other team up films.

@Kman -

To me Justice League Dark coming so soon after Justice League would hint at a potential idea of a crossover or rivalry between the two teams in a potential Justice League sequel. After all, if they plan on making Justice League a trilogy they can't really use Darkseid in the second movie.

As for Batgirl, to me it hints that they would rather start establishing a younger newer hero and that they may plan on killing off Batman at some stage - especially given he was introduced as an older tired Batman. At this stage i'm think the solo Batman movie could easily turn into a 'Logan-inspired' telling of the Red Hood storyline with an old Batman trying desperately to prevent Red Hood from causing chaos, discovering he's actually the former Robin he thought was killed by Joker, and having his morals questioned one last time before he dies. Maybe have the former Robin take up the mantle of Batman afterwards.

@Scarilian - that Red Hood idea has been bouncing around for awhile. I hope it comes to fruition.

@Kman -

I hope they use the idea also;
- The Red Hood would mirrors Batman's character development in the DCEU. Both start a hero, both deeply hurt by the Joker, both lose their way, one makes it back to being heroic thanks to being reminded by Superman while the other is warped and twisted by the Joker.
- Tests and shows Batman's commitment to his newly developed 'One Rule'
- Can be used to establish Batman as a more heroic character via flashbacks and show Joker as a more intimidating threat via his attack on the former Robin
- Could take elements from 'Knightfall' such as the idea of Red Hood unleashing the villains and forcing Batman to take them down, trying to see if he resorts to the easy route of killing them, then attacking him when he's exhausted from crime fighting
- Using the potential death of Batman as a way to motivate a new Batman. Having the title of the movie, Batman, not as a universal character; not a man, but a symbol.
