Cillian Murphy's BATMAN BEGINS Screen-Test Footage Goes Viral Thanks To OPPENHEIMER

Though this isn't the first time we've seen this footage, Cillian Murphy's screen-test for Batman Begins has resurfaced thanks to the actor's lead role in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer...

Cillian Murphy's screen-test for Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins is doing the rounds online again, due in large part to the Irish actor's celebrated performance in Nolan's latest, Oppenheimer.

The footage was originally released as part of a longer featurette, and shows Murphy both in-costume as the Dark Knight as he interrogates one of Carmine Falcone's men, and as Bruce Wayne during a scene with Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes).

Nolan has previously admitted that he never really felt Murphy was the right fit for this role, but the filmmaker was so impressed by his performance that he made sure Warner Bros. execs saw this footage, and was ultimately able to cast him as Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow.

“Everybody was so excited by watching [Cillian] perform that when I then said to them, ‘Okay, Christian Bale is Batman, but what about Cillian to play Scarecrow?’ There was no dissent,” Nolan recently told Entertainment Weekly. “All the previous Batman villains had been played by huge movie stars: Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, that kind of thing. That was a big leap for them and it really was purely on the basis of that test. So that’s how you got to play Scarecrow.”

As it turns out, Murphy never saw himself as Batman, either, and told GQ Magazine that he believed Christian Bale landing the part was "for the best."

“Yes, I think it was for the best because we got Christian Bale’s performance, which is a stunning interpretation of that role. I never considered myself as the right physical specimen for Batman. To me, it was always going to be Christian Bale.”

Have another look at the footage in the player below, and let us know if you think Murphy would have been a good pick to play the Caped Crusader in the comments.

Great actor. Too skinny for Batman.

@santoanderson - Too skinny you say? 😉😉

@TheOtherOn - Ehhh, by that point Nolan and co. had already seen American Psycho and knew Bale could pack on weight and muscle.

IIRC after filming for The Machinist wrapped Bale pigged-out to gain the weight back as fast as he could, and ended up gaining too much weight prior to Batman, and he had to drop some pounds.

Murphy, meanwhile, has always been built like a garden rake.

He’s got the chops, there isn’t a slither of doubt about that. And probably a better voice for it than any Batman actor we’ve had to date. But his face just doesn’t suit the cowl.

He would've made a great Bruce Wayne, not sure I see him as Batman tho tbh; not really imposing or intimidating imo, especially in that clip when he's shown right after Bale.

Out of Those 3 , Bale was the clear choice imo (though Eion Bailey’s Bruce seemed pretty good but his Batman not so much).

Murphy might have done well in the role but I just couldn’t see him as Bruce , I’m glad though that Nolan liked him enough to cast him as Scarecrow though…

He did well in that role and I liked his version.

God this footage just reminds me how bad the mouth/jaw opening on bales batsuit was.

This one looks so much better on bale imo, bc the dark knight suits mouth is too small and rounded, almost looks like the mouth opening on a ski mask lol

Christopher Nolan made the greatest trilogy of all time thanks in part to the greatest casting of all time. Every character fit their part perfectly and are the best iterations of these characters ever in any format.

So happy to see Murphy get a huge leading role like this and crush it. Hope he takes home the Oscar, absolutely insane range in his career

@tmp3 - dude was absolutely stupendous in Oppenheimer... if he doesn't get it then cancel the awards altogether

@MotherGooseUPus - He’s a force in that movie. Compare to his performances in 28 Days Later, Peaky Blinders and even something like Scarecrow and you can see how vast his range is. I loved mission but i’ll be surprised if anything this year, outside of maybe dune and flower moon, is better than Oppy for me

@tmp3 - oh I hear yea. Dude was magnificent and has been for a long time.

For me idk, I need a rewatch of both MI DR and Oppenheimer to decide. I think the only rival would be Dune but idk if it's coming out or not... regardless.. the summer has been great for movies

Even though I have a preference, I do love unconventional takes on Bruce Wayne. Cillian Murphy would've felt similar to the Robert Pattinson casting. Obviously Rob's more handsome, but Cillian would've given off that same brooding outcast vibe.

Fitting, considering this version of batman eventually accidentally made a nuclear bomb.

Bale was great with what he was given. Murphy would have been great as Bruce Wayne as well. The only problem was that in the last two movies, Batman was written as an idiot in decline. He chose to wreck his Batpod instead of taking out a killer with a machine gun. He could've at least knock out the Joker as he went around him.

In TDKR, he became a quitter who was outplayed by not so smart Talia & Bane. His fighting skills deteriorated to the point he was throwing haymakers and telegraphing them.

He did a couple brilliant things in The Dark Knight but in The Dark Knight Rises he was not very smart at all.

All the previous Batman villains had been played by huge movie stars

Same goes for Begins I think. Neeson was the main villain, and well known. Great as Murphy as Scarecrow was, he never felt like a big villain.

Nolan got the casting right. They were both absolutely right for the roles they played in the trilogy.
